TV ratings in: Pats more popular than ever

Record ratings reached during Patriots' regular season - Extra Points - Boston.com

As the Red Sox ratings hit alarming lows, the Pats have done just the opposite.

No surprise, as far as I'm concerned. This is a very likable team. And the Kraft-Brady-BB era has ushered in a new generation of fans.

I hope this dispels the silly notion that Red Sox >>>>>>>>> Pats as far as the Boston sports fan's attention span is concerned. Before BB/TFB, I would have bought it, but not since February 2002, and especially not since 2007.

A very good indicator was that the Sunday nite game against Green Bay, did better than the Survivor Finale, of course locally, but surprisingly nationally.

In 15 of 16 regular season games in Boston, 55 percent of televisions were tuned in to the Patriots.

The other 45 percent need to get the hell out of Boston... :americaflag::D

The Sox are, I think, a victim of their own media presence. They are everywhere all the time and after a while you just need a break. That and the fact that they built a bridge and then everyone on the team (seemingly) got injured. I say this even though I'm a Sox season ticket holder. I do think the Sox bounce back this year (how could they not?).

At the end of the day, football is just the better TV product and if the Pats are contenders then they'll always press the Sox for viewership.

Last years Red Sox team was just boring, and then Youkilis and Pedroia got injured. I think the addition of a Superstar in Gonzales and a guy like Crawford who is awesome to watch both on the bases and in the field will help that.

Baseball is also hurt just by the sheer number of games, football is must see tv since there are only 16. That said this Patriots team is far more likable and fun to watch than the 2010 Red Sox team was.

These numbers could be way off. For one, I always watch the game with friends and I would imagine those guys would have switched off their TVs.

Most women don't like football (there are exceptions, of course) and while the men gather around one TV to watch the game, the women are probably watching other shows, not football.

I think the redsox struggles last season had something to do with it. Their season was over by june and there was no compelling story about the team. Since the redsox did not reach the playoffs, the patriots had the attention of the new england region for the whole season.

After a decade of dominance, still an awesome time to be a Boston sports fan.

Sox, Celts, Pats I WANT TRES PARADES!! :rocker:

That is great to hear. Living here in New York I always got the impression Boston was a RedSox town and the Pats were a distant second.

I would still think when the Sox are good they would get more attention, but at least the Pats are getting their due, and if anything they narrowed the gap between the two

So you think that the Patriots viewership depends on how the minor sports teams do?

Never miss a game here!
Unless there is a "Golden Girls" marathon on.

I think Boston is easily big enough to cater for the 4 professional teams, Pats, RedSox, Celtics and Bruins.

It doesnt have to be labelled as a football city or a Baseball city. Plenty of people support both. There is also a lot like me that like ALL the teams from Boston.

There is no shame in liking more than 1 sport

Not surprising, the Pats rock and the Sox suck.

Boston is now a football city.

I didnt watch even one red sox game this year. the older I get the more boring it is to watch. I cant even remember the last pats game I missed though.

My favorite team is the Red Sox, but my favorite sport is football.

I was still a Sox fanatic last season and watched 80-85% of the games. Crawford and Gonzo!!!!!!!

I just couldn't get into the Sox this year, like alot of people. :( I dunno...many have said this year's Sox team wasn't all that exciting or interesting and I'm inclined to agree with them. I was much more of a baseball fanatic growing up but I think after 2004 and 2007 Fulfilled the Dream, so there was nowhere to go but down in terms of Red Sox passion. I used to HATE those "baseball is boring" bashers but... but...

sigh...

I won't say it's BORING but I've found I just can't sit through a game and enjoy it anymore as much as I used to. I used to be able to watch almost any MLB game between any two teams but now if I'm traveling or something, I'll have it on the TV or radio, but it'll just be background. I won't be paying attention.

Football and the Pats are officially #1 with me now. :D

I don't think Boston will ever NOT be a baseball/Sox town, though. It's not a given that they'll always be #1 like the media always assumes, though.
