I'll bet you Bill won't win. With Brady there's no one else whose performance compares but I think the expectations of BB are pretty high and I think they'll give it to a coach whose team was a surprise.

Seriously, GM Belichick and Director of Player Personnel Casserio deserve consideration for Executive of the Year. However, Coach Belichick had more to work with than the coaches in TB, St Loius or even Atlanta. All three of those coaches did as much or more with what they had than Belichick did. Belichick had Brady and Welker. Belichick had Wilfork, Mayo and McCourty.

I am not saying that Belichick shouldn't get the award, just that it is not at all as clear as you say.

As Boomer said on D&C today, his bar is already set pretty high and there is an expectation that he should "win". Whereas, a nobody from Tampa could well be first choice or someone like Mike Smith.

When you go 14-2 with Brady, people expect that. When you go 10-6 With Josh Freeman and the lowest payroll in the NFL, people are shocked. Coach of the year isn't about who the best coach was that year, it's about who suprised you the most.

So yes there are a lot of ways BB doesn't win.

He should obviously get it with the way he's moved this team along this year. Before the season began, the Pats weren't even considered a top 10 team in the NFL to some analysts. Belichick nailed it with the 2010 draft and also getting rid of a key player (Moss), only to replace him with Branch, who some thought was washed up.

He's been great all year with his scheming and preperation. He knows exactly what he's doing and this year may be his best coaching performance yet. He absolutely deserves it. Does that mean he's going to get it? No. I'm not sure why, but he probably won't get it.

I think it could very well be Morris, who almost made the playoffs in a very tough division with (I believe) no pro-bowlers, and low-overall payroll.

EDIT: Haley and Lovie will get some nods as well, deserved or not.

Pete Carroll... JK. It's going to be BB. No team went into this season with as many questions and now they are on top of the NFL as the postseason tourney begins with a 14-2 record. The only NFL coach ever to lead 4 teams to at least 14 win seasons. I wonder if postseason success will factor into the voting for coach of the year. If it does and the Pats win it all, there will be no doubt at all.

I wouldn't consider it to be a lock. I would say there's a very good chance that it goes to Mike Smith of the Falcons. There's also going to be some consideration for Todd Haley, Lovie Smith, Mike Tomlin, Morris, Steve Spagnuolo and Andy Reid. Smith won it two years ago though and they seem to prefer to award new coaches rather than give it to the same coach more than once, so who knows.

I'm not saying those other coaches are more deserving; just saying I wouldn't consider Belichick to be a lock at all.

I can't imagine how he doesn't. IF St. Louis won last night, then I could've seen Spagnuolo, as they were 1-15 and had the first overall pick last year.

And anybody who says Haley should read Whitlock's latest piece... he tears the guy to shreds, and not just on a coaching basis.

BB will not win it! Expecting that sound rational decision making will go into the selection is completely irrational. Also, too many people don't like our coach, so actual achievement and merit have nothing to do with it.

Enough of them found a way to give it to him after Spygate, so I don't think it's out of the question.

OTOH, I remember reading that something like 80% of the time it goes to a new* coach whose team had a big turnaround.

*First, second, or third year with that particular team

7. Bill Belichick is Coach of the Year, but Raheem Morris isn't far behind. New England's over-under win total in Vegas in the preseason was 9.5, and they won 14 games. The +4.5 swing was the biggest in the NFL – tied with the Bucs, who were at 5.5 wins and wound up with 10.

And as we first reported here last week, Belichick is now the first and only coach in NFL history to win 14 or more games in four different seasons. Hell, only one other franchise (San Francisco) has accomplished that feat, let alone one coach.

Belichick clearly deserves the nod as the season’s best coach. And if he doesn’t win it there’s some splainin’ to do.

Still, it’s hard not to be impressed by the play of Morris’s Bucs. They didn't have much on paper and they were hit by injury quite a bit, but still played well enough to be in the playoff mix.

They even got a Quality Win in their last shot at a good team after an 0-5 start. Sure, Drew Brees went to the bench before it was over, but the Bucs beat the Saints fair and square, 23-13.

With the NFC South stacked with the Falcons and Saints, the future isn’t a sure thing for Tampa, but at least they’ve found their coach.

In COTY, there is this stupid tradition of giving it not to the best coach, but the coach on the team that has exceeded expectations the most.

Even though that is still CLEARLY the New England Patriots, Belichick's prior success and recent winning of the prize will probably knock him out of contention.

It's a silly system.

I think BB Should win, but i wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't. I can see Smith or Morris winning it because those two teams are usually mediocre to poor and it looks even more impressive to pull a perenially lousy team out of their malaise

It usually goes to a guy that overcame long odds or the record was so good it was a no-brainer.

Todd Haley of the Chiefs is probably going to win and he definitely deserves consideration.

Mike Smith in Atlanta is a great choice as well. Smith won two years ago for pulling the Falcons back from the ledge following the Michael Vick/Bobby Petrino fiascos.

Belichick deserves to win but probably won't. He's won it twice before '03 and '07.

For reference: the current Coach of the Year for his genius in 2009 is (drumroll.....) Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bungles! Thud. Another coach on the chopping block for his work with diva WRs.

I think COTY is an award that often overlooks coaches that are consistently good or excellent. It's often more about "turnaround" stories that surprise people (even if those turnarounds are for a year only--see Lewis, Marvin).

So if BB somehow doesn't win COTY this year, consider it the ultimate sign of respect--you're 14-2, yet no one is surprised. It's just expected.
