The way the Dolphins laid down means Sporano is likely gone and Cowher is his likely replacement. The Pats haven't had to contend with a great head coach in this division since Parcells left the Jets. Cowher in the division could actually give the Pats real and consistent competion for the division title which the Pats haven't had during the Belichick era.

We'll find out how good Cowher is with his next assignment. He had great personnel at Pittsburgh, and a lot of help getting them. We'll see what he can do starting with average. He's a media darling because he's a likeable guy, has a big jaw, and was successful with his first team. He may continue to be, but it isn't a certainty.

The guy did go to two Super Bowls with two totally different squads (one with Neil O'Donnell as his QB). He brought a team lead by Kordell Stewart to the AFC Championship game multiple times. I think he has proven he is pretty good.

Not until he locates a QB they won't. And somehow I cannot picture Cowher landing in Miami with Ross. Carolina for geographic reasons was his long awaited target. He's rumored to be interested in the Giants who will apparently wait out Coughlin for another season. I just don't see him setting himself up to butt heads with BB and TFB for the next 5 years given how loaded this team is poised to be.

Agreed. I've never heard Cowher seriously rumored for Miami, only Chicago (early this year) and Giants. Carolina would make more sense.

Cowher had the Steelers as legitimate Super Bowl contenders with Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox. I don't know if he needs a great QB to win.

Agreed. The Steelers formula has always been run first and strong defense. The quarterback just needs to be servicable and not make mistakes, which isn't always easy to find. They have used the same philosophy with all 3 head coaches. The question is, can Cowher do it a different way?

And that was no easy task. The Kordell "Slash" Stewart decision worked out quite nicely for him.

I loved watching the Pats play against Stewart. He was best as a gimmick QB with O'Donnell and never did much in the playoffs as a true starting QB.

Gotta give BC credit on QBs. He squeezed every ounce of talent out of every Qb that played for him. O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart and Maddux who was a bust in DEN.

Yeah I was thinking this too. I don't want him in the AFC East. Schefter was on Mike and Mike and said before the game Sporano was safe but after getting humiliated like that, he's in trouble. He says their owner was a "sexy" splashy HC and threw out Cowher and Gruden.

Not sure any of the high-profile coaches would want to come to the AFC East. Not with the Sith Lord in Foxboro.

Gruden is going to CLE. Hes a Holmgren protege' and is a Ohio boy. But by all accounts he loves the TV life.

Cowher has history with Carl Peterson who is a friend of Ross and is involved with the Dolphins.

With that being said, Carolina is more tempting IMO, with the 1st pick in the draft (Andy Luck?) and there is no way to go but up with the Panthers.

That was almost a decade ago. And almost only counts in horseshoes. He had a lot of lean years that the Rooney's were OK with because they're old school and they had a system he was just a piece of for much of that time. New age owners aren't nearly as patient. And he didn't win until they drafted a legit QB and I think in some part until he learned some painful lessons at the feet of his tormentor...like humility. And when he saw some bumps in the road (Ben) following that one SB season he oddly headed for the hills for a while because I think he foresaw how difficult it would be to maintain that competitiveness in the AFC. I think he's smart enough to pick a spot where he will have a better shot of competing for a superbowl like a weaker division or even conference...and with a better ownership behind him. He's enjoying his time in the booth and I bet it's given him some perspective. He could probably still be bought, but given the CBA uncertainty this isn't a sellers market for anyone looking for a lucrative HC gig.

This is a QB league and we have the best. As long as Brady is under centre, we will always own the AFCE.

Never said that Cowher would bring championships to Miami or whatever team he goes to. I said he would be the first guy with the potential of giving the Pats a serious run for the AFC East title year after year rather than these guys who do it one year and then fall apart like we have had over the last decade. That is a big difference than saying he is going to bring Super Bowl to Miami or whatever team he goes to.

I think hes going to the Giants. Daughers go to school in NJ. Hes buds with Tisch. Has a young QB. Good defense. Just needs brains.

I remember a poster on this board, Steeler fan known as TommyMaddoxMVP.

Good times.

Something strikes me different about the inherent, nasty attitude of all Pittsburgh Steelers players, and how Cowher was able to drive them to consistent success, vs. what he'd potentially be working with in Miami for the Dolphins. Jimmy Johnson tried his hand there and accomplished exactly squat. Let Cowher take that job. They're not about to become 'Pittsburgh South' with him.

Tomlin's success would potentially seem to undercut your position a bit. I don't know how inquiring owners would view that, but it's certainly possible that the Steelers' post-Cowher success would put a bit of tarnish on Cowher's star.

I've seen recent (last 2-3 weeks) stories that his three choices would be NYG, HOU or MIA...of course he also recently said he doesn't have a wish list because it is sort of unsaid respect among coaches that you don't go out and publicly campaign for someone else's job.(Like a Kubiak or Coughlin)

I've also seen that it is his number ONE priority to have a relatively established QB in place. Yes, he had some success to some point with no-namers and relative no-namers. But he also recognized how hard it was for him when he was using Maddox and Kordell, and doesn't want to go through it again. Since he is basically the top name in coaching available, he won't have to if he really doesn't want to. Miami would be the most surprising given all aspects involved, although the tough defense might be something he thinks he can build on since they play a 3-4. Or maybe he sees something in Henne. Or maybe he just likes Florida weather in the Fall.

Out of those three, Houston and NYG make more sense given his want of a QB. Especially Houston, which has an explosive offensive and really needs a defensive mind to come in and fix that side of the ball for them. They also have some good talent in defense and might be more suited to switch to a 3-4 than in NYG. Kubiak is also more on the hot seat although he may get another year from what I hear...Coughlin is likely to get another year IMO. The Colts aside, HOU also plays in a weaker division than both the AFC east and NFC east.

Of course, for a month or so the entire Baseball world tried to figure out where Cliff Lee was going between NY and Texas. Some outlets went so far as to analyze tax rates, possible cancer centers in case his child's leukemia came out of remission, the fact his wife hated NY, and even took into account that he loved hunting with guys from the Texas team, and was at one point this fall seen buying a pair of cowboy boots in Texas. Then he went to Philly out of nowhere.

My point is that we can look at where Cowher's kids go to school, or who he is friends with, or what city has the best barber for moustache upkeep, but he could end up in several places not mentioned alot also.

EDIT: I just don't see Cowher coaching Carolina. Yes, he moved there before his wife passed away in his last year with the Steelers and he does have friends there. But that team is a train wreck right now and Andrew Luck is not going to turn them around on his own. Cowher lives 3 hours away from where they play so it's not like he is driving home after practices. He would have to be on an acid trip to go to Dallas and deal with Jerry Jones, who is not going to give him the autonomy he would want.
