If Luck does the right thing and stays in school, does Carolina reach for Newton or do they try and develop Cluasen?

Would be a major reach. Schefter is reporting Harbaugh to Michigan. Luck is going to the NFL if that happens.

Harbaugh to Michigan, really? Once again they would have to retool thier entire recruiting (from the spread to ther Pro style offense). I would think that if Harbaugh leaves Palo Alto it would be for the NFL and not Ann Arbor.

I still feel Luck would come out regardless. He would make the same mistake that Locker maded if he came back.

This is the best move Michigan could have made, period!

Of course it follows the worst move they could have made, period. :p

I think it makes sense for Luck to come out regardless of what his coach does.

I meant Newton going 1st overall would be a reach. Sorry for confusing post there. Harbaugh to Michigan=no brainer.

Absolutely would not reach for Newton. Then again I'm not so sure I would take Luck either.

There are a half dozen positions they need to fill more than QB.
Clausen hasn't gotten it done, but there have been a lot of rookie QBs struggle for a year or two. The OL is a mess, they need a WR or two, a TE, probably another RB. And that's just on offense.

Why waste the time with the star QB, just to see him run for his life, and not have anyone to throw to? At least get the OL and DL situation figured out, then get your QB.

If Luck does declare, there will probably be a team or two offering a kings ransom to move up for him. Take the Ransom and use it to improve the overall talent on the team. If Clausen still doesn't show any sign of improvement, then get your QB next year.

Right. Your the consensus #1 pick and carolina will be getting a new HC next season so you get the total regime change thing happening.

Plus they actually have a competent run game much like bradford's situation last year. Their O-line sucks but like any lottery team that's to be expected.

Projecting what Carolina will do depends on whom they select for Head Coach. This is a reasoning ahead of the data thread.

FWIW - the only time I watched Carolina this season was against Pittsburgh and before I turned the game off in disgust my impression was Clausen was playing well enough to keep, his WRs, including Stud Smith, brought their stone hands.

I actually like it better than the situations Bradford or Stafford got. The OL is actually not too bad. Jordan Gross at LT, Jeff Otah at RT is decent. Need some interior guys though, but decent tackles. #1 WR in Steve Smith, decent D. Not bad at all.

So given all this, doesn't Newton seem like the better fit for Carolina?

I think Carolina would be a great landing spot for Newton. But the original question was whether Carolina reaches here for him with the #1 overall pick if Luck stays in school, and I don't think they would. There are a few questions surrounding him, way more than I would risk with that pick.

If there was a trade-down scenario where they could take Newton say 5th to 10th, then I could see that, but I can't imagine it happening unless they implement a rookie salary cap this year, which I doubt.

But a lot will change over the next few months, not just on the draft board but also within Carolina's organization.

They're gonna have to retool anyway, it's not like they're anywhere near becoming an elite team. Harbaugh would be stupid to go anywhere but Michigan (that includes staying at Stanford). When a college coach gets a mediocre program to have one of its best years and then doesn't take the job offer he got from an elite program it ends up being the wrong decision 9/10 times.

Isn't Luck pretty mobile himself? Considering Carolina has no 2nd round pick and is in dire financial situation, they might be better off trading out of #1 and still getting Newton.

If Luck comes out, he's a stone cold lock for #1 pick. Why would you say staying is school is "doing the right thing"?

There is along road ahead before Newton can be anointed the number 1 pick. At this point, it is apparent that based on his college play and his physical gifts, he is at first blush a far more formidable QB than Vick. He is 6 inches taller, much heavier yet has quickness and can really run and be tough to bring down. He also has a strong arm. What needs to be determined is his accuracy, consistency and decision-making.
