I think it would make sense if he's being hired as an offensive coordinator.

The recently fired head coach of the Denver Broncos could be an interesting candidate to replace Weis, whom he succeeded as the offensive coordinator in New England. ESPN's Adam Schefter said on the air last Sunday that if Weis ended up being one-and-done in Kansas City, McDaniels is a logical replacement.

I know, the first thing you're going to think of is the handshake controversy with Kansas City head coach Todd Haley in November. Haley was upset with McDaniels and refused to shake hands after a Denver win. Haley apologized the next day and the two embraced after a Kansas City win three weeks later. McDaniels was fired the next day.

If Weis does leave, the Chiefs will need to find a quality replacement. The offense has flourished this year and it is a big reason why the Chiefs are a surprising 10-5 and have won the AFC West division title. The team has to ensure it keeps up this high level of play next season.

Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel has made big strides in his development this season. Reuniting him with McDaniels wouldn’t hurt.

I'm sure McDaniels would be interested in this job. He will likely have to go back to being an offensive coordinator as he tries to pick up the pieces of his career after the Denver debacle. Even though McDaniels' stay in Denver was a failure, he did continue to show he is a fine offensive coach. Players like Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd blossomed under McDaniels.

As an offensive coordinator, he wouldn't be in charge of personnel decisions like he was in Denver, so he would be able to concentrate on areas that are his strengths. I'm also sure McDaniels would relish the opportunity to return to the AFC West and get the chance to face his former team twice a season.

Why? They have Todd Haley.....

I'd be surprised to see McDaniels in KC next year, although it would make a ton of sense for both of them. I still think the handshake incident is probably not sitting well with McDaniels, and I don't think he'll have a problem finding a OC job elsewhere.

Best opinion right there ... any strong candidate needs to stay away from that job. Someone desperate to move up the ladder should take it for the resume.

Would be a good idea with JMcD's connection with MFC, but I very much doubt it would happen!

Agreed. Josh doesn't need the grief that comes with working with Haley. If Charlie couldn't get along with him, no way Josh will.

Josh just got a settlement from the Broncos too. No figures released, but he was owed close to $7 mill so I'm assuming he can take a year or two off rather than go work for Haley.

I figure McDaniels would like to work with Cassel again. Remember, if he had his way, Cassel would be in Denver and Cutler would be in Tampa (?). McDaniels would probably have a job still if that happened.

I bet Tampa are happy it didn't happen :)

If they hire Josh they might as well have axed Haley now because that will be what happens after next season. The only way I could see him taking that job is if Scott insures him he has autonomy, same thing RAC has on defense and the underlying reason Charlie has opted to move on. If that happened he'd be in line to replace a disgruntled Haley when the time comes.

Josh will have lots of options as an OC, not sure that one would be worth the grief other than as a firmer stepping stone back to the HC ranks working for a GM who would keep him on the straight and narrow personnel wise with a built in BB defense installed and run by RAC.

There are a couple of other NE raised candidates who will be coming available within days...Daboll when Mangini gets canned and Davidson now that Fox staff has been let go. If either of them even gets the job (and someone should who can run the Weis offense) then it's a sign Pioli is reigning in Haley. If someone outside the (Weis disciple) box gets the title based on history with Haley in Chicago or Dallas or AZ it's a sign he's decided to run with Haley and give him enough rope to hang himself if they take a step back...

It's gotta suck for Scott right now that he hired a guy to run a selfless system where ego has to be checked at the door for the good of the team who can't manage that... Accountability has to flow from the top down or this system doesn't fly...

KC has more 227 more rushing yards than any other team and they average 4.8 YPC. If they have any interest in keeping that balance and letting Jamal Charles reach his potential, they'd stay as far away from that idiot as possible. He'd be a terrible replacement for Weis, the most KC should do with McDaniels is make him the QB coach (a job he'd never accept).

If they made him the OC, he'd ditch the running game for no reason and turn them into a one dimensional offense. Dwayne Bowe would put up huge numbers the first half of the season and there'd be a media *********** about how McDaniels is an offensive genius. Eventually teams would start doubling and tripling Bowe while basically daring KC to run the ball on them or beat them with short passes, and then their offense would implode at the wrong time because McDaniels would continue to force plays to Bowe that aren't there.

No he wouldn't. All the extremely dumb personnel moves McDaniels made and the terrible defense McDaniels has done a terrible job addressing had nothing to do with Orton being at QB as oppose to Cassel. For that matter, the play they've gotten at QB has been the one good thing that's happened for Denver while McDaniels has been there.

That's a good point... Kansas City is currently a running team, the league's top rushing team. Once McDaniels was out in Denver, an emphasis to reestablish the running game there was apparent.

Perhaps, Kansas City isn't an ideal fit for both he and them.

Maybe, McDaniels can look to a team that didn't make the playoffs this season and were among the lowest ranked teams in passing and total offense like Carolina and Arizona. I would think Arizona is the more appealing destination of the two. They've John Skelton, Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston, Early Doucet and Tim Hightower as threats in the passing game.
