Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

I still never understood why the Chiefs signed a bunch of ex-Patriots after Pioli joined. Was it Haley's team or not?

They wanted to win?

Did they really need Weis to win? Haley is a great offensive mind himself. Coaches usually like to bring in there own staff and who knows if Haley really wanted Weis on the staff.

Haley tried serving as both the O.C. and H.C. last season, with poor results. He needed someone to run the offense, and he'd worked with Weis before.

Interesting, where did they work together before? He defiantly wasn't capable of running both last season but do you think Weis was his first choice to run the offense?

Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

I don't know if anybody said this but, the Head coach is the BOSS. period, end of sentance. Pioli did the right thing by not undermining the Head Coach. As soon as you undermine the HC you turn into the Raiders or Cowboys. If Weis cannot co-exist with Haley, then with all due respect, Weis has to go. I don't know if Haley is good, bad, or incomplete, but you don't, as GM, interfere with the HC unless you're planning to replace him.

In 1997-1998, Haley worked as an assistant under Weis, while Weis was serving as O.C. for the Jets. As for the first choice stuff, I don't have any privileged information on that situation.

Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

Weis news. A source tells The Program a reason Weis may go to Florida is the chance to work with his son who graduates from HS this year...

We learned Weis' son was set to go to U-T to work under Muschamp in the football office while going to school and now will follow him to Fla

You are wrong. Pioli is the GM. The conversation goes like this...

SP-"Todd, what do you think about Weis as a new OC"
TH-"Sure, let's bring him in and talk about it more"

..after the meeting with CW

SC-"I think CW would be a great fit for us. I also think it'll free you up in your responsibilities as HC"
TH-"I think I can handle being OC and HC, Scott"
SC-"Charlie has won 3 SBs, Todd and knows this system. Let's give it a shot. We need help as last year is just didn't work"
TH-"Ok"

Organizations do it all the time. The boss says lets interview a friend of mine and you roll with it.

Just like a QB doesn't lose his job to injury right?

Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

Semi-OT on an OT thread...

Broncos reach settlement with Josh McDaniels | National Football Post

No terms released, but considering he was owed close to $7 million, I think Josh doesn't have to work with someone he doesn't like for a year or two at least.

He really sucked as a HC.. the decisions he made were just god awful. Especially the personnel moves.. Drafting Teboe.. trading cutler, trading the back to cleveland, getting rid of there wr.. they were all productive players else where. He is laughing all the way to the bank.. he is a millionaire for sucking.

I think he did okay as a HC. The personnel moves were what led to his downfall, but there are plenty of HCs who shouldn't be making personnel decisions. In fact, BB is one of the few that does it well.

He'd probably do better somewhere else where he didn't buy the groceries and just focused on coaching.

Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

Then why don't the 30 other teams do it too? My point was that Piloli was signing these guys and I'm not sure how much he cared if they fit into what Haley was trying to do. Haley seems like just a puppet at this point.

Anyone who thinks that getting rid of Cutler and Marshall were bad moves under the circumstances, particularly with what was gotten in return, pretty much removes himself from serious football conversation.

As for Tebow, time will tell. However, he looked better last week than Sanchez has looked in his second year on the job.

If you have a GM interfereing with the HC, such as having an offensive coordinator trying to go over his head (note: I don't know or think that happened) then it creates turmoil. Its like if someone goes to the GM at work because he doesn't like what the Manager decided, unless its very egregous the GM has to side with the manager no matter how good of friends or skilled the employee is. Otherwise it will quickly turn into a production disaster,

If, I mean If, Weis and Haley were clashing, there can be only one cheif Cheif (pun), and Pioli, either gets rid of Haley, or lets Weis walk away friends. When it comes to football or anything for that matter, when upper management interfere with his supervisors (HC) then the supervisors (HC) loses any sembalence of authority and the inmates run the aslyum.

Re: OT: Charlie Weis to leave chiefs after this season?

Different subject, but on that line of thought, if Todd Haley was in danger of losing his job (injured if you will) then Charley Weis would not be going to Fla.

I still believe as a GM or higher, you back the Head Coach all the way, unless you're planning to make a change.

But all this is just speculation on our part because we don't know in fact there is a problem between Todd Haley and Charlie Weis. maby Charlie is just sick of the Cold. But this is what we do know, Charlie is moving south, and Todd isn't. So the question is, IF, big IF, Pioli had to make a decision, what was it?

I hear what you are saying, 420jim. My point is that I don't think Pioli jammed CW down TH's throat during the hiring process. He let TH gain a level of comfort with CW and empowered him to say yes or no. By doing that, Pioli has politically removed himself from the hiring process and allowed TH to run the day to day. CW strikes me as someone who will not break rank or throw people under the bus and run upstairs to Scott and complain about TH's temper tantrums. He may have had a beer with Scott and ask for some advice on how to work with TH better or he even had the convo with TH directly and nothing came of it. Who knows what actually happened but to be honest, part of me doesn't believe the whole, 'CW can't work with TH' stuff and this whole story is contrived by some moron when the real reason is that CW wants an easier job so he can be with his son at U of F and spend time with his daughter who has special needs.

One thing though, I have no issues w/ Weis or Crennel's ability. In fact I wished they both came back to NE. I not dumping on Weis, I'm just saying theres a totem pole of heirarchy and Weis is lower than Haley, and if things don't work out in Fla. then I hope he thinks about comming home to NE.

Oh, I don't think he did either. I think there were some issues, and Pioli and Haley, on freindly terms, let Charlie walk. Because in my small opinion, if it was ugly, the press would be all over it. Nothing stays a secret in the NFL.
