Wright Injury

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

I worry about those things too and in that order. But if the Team thought he was done for the year they would have put him on IR and opened up the roster spot so they must think he'll be able to come back.

Wonder if Spikes coming back might make that happen?

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

Worried about three things, in this order of importance:

1. That his concussion not haunt him for the rest of his life; that he doesn't have post concussion symptoms that have plagued so many NFL players.

2. That he be able to return to the team at some point.

3. That he be able to return to the team this year.

I am most worried about #3 because the Pats will make up for his loss in the offseason...they really need him in 2 wks and then moving forward through the SB.
I still can't recall the play he was injured on and no video of the play, either.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

It's certainly concerning. 6+ weeks is an awful long time to not be seen following a concussion. Have there been any similar length concussion related absences in the NFL?

It goes back 50 years to a much more primitive time in medicine and treatment but the most famous NFL concussion was Frank Gifford's after a brutal hit by Chuck Bednarik in the 1960 championship game. Gifford was out of football for over a year..

That could be the move. I hope not. We could really use Wright. I understand resting him and taking precautions, but if he's not even in the locker room, that seems to suggest he's nowhere near coming back.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

It's really scary, he obviously had a significant brain injury to still be away from the stadium at this point. I've just been clinging to the fact that they haven't IRed him as a sign that the situation's not too dire.

Don't rely on that. Given the Spikes roster opening, BB may simply be waiting as long as he possibly can before making an irrevocable decision. Why not?

It may be that he's already made the decision, but wants to evaluate who to cut and who to keep for the postseason roster. I am sure the move will come after the last game on Sunday when the new players have put in enough reps.

I remember reading that Wright's neck was involved- so it may be a spinal concussion.

Precisely. And as commented previously any last minute injuries factored in. Good management does not make precipitous decisions before all the information is available when timeliness is not required.

I don't think Spikes can be the key factor, since Wright was out for a month with no IR before Spikes' oopsie came to light.

Spikes is not a key factor. It's simply that when he rejoins the roster sometime after tomorrow's game, somebody's gotta go. Hopefully the right person.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

IIRC the injury was initially described as a neck injury, so maybe more than just a concussion at work here. If there is a neck injury (ie spine) something to be extremely careful with.

I dont recall the precise play but it was against the Colts and after the play he could be seen starting to walk toward the wrong bench. I would imagine if you had a recording still it wouldnt be to hard to find.

And yes I am worried about when we get him back because we could really use the help on the line. As to the long term effects and not to underestimate the unpredictable nature of them (see Savard) but I would think the fact he has not been IRed yet would be a real good sign and I would not assume that Spikes takes his spot though it is logical I would only assume that if the team determined Wright was done otherwise I would think you could find someone closer to 53 to get rid of.

Another two weeks of healing could be just what he needs.

Yep. We keep discussing PCS which is something not to take lightly but there is also the possibility that he had surgery on his neck. God knows how long that can take to recover from but seeing that he hasn't been IR'ed, the team is hopeful that he can recover and be a contributor before the SB.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

Definitely not good that we don't have Wright back yet. He's been a prototypical BB player since joining in 2005. Solid positionally, versatile and productive. Really hope he can get healthy but by the tone of Reiss' article linked above, that doesn't sound good at all.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

the fact that the "concussion" was caused by an upercut to the jaw in the trenches and the six plus week recovery time might indicate a possible fractured jaw. Why would the team offer more information than nessisary, and reveil a possible week spot for opposing offences to pick on. If so we may see him in time for the play offs.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

Note other thread that has BRACE going onto IR when Spikes returns

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

I'm a big fan of Mike Wright. Always seems like a guy who takes advantage of the opportunities he gets.

It would be great to see him back for the playoffs. Hopefully his injury is not as severe as Reiss thinks it could be.

Re: Anyone Worried About Wright?

I like Wright as well, and just hope he's ok. He busted his butt and made himself a solid player, so it would really suck if it turns out to be a long-term thing.

We could really use him though. So far BB has been a genius in the way he's used Wilfork, and Vince has been playing at an MVP level. Hopefully some other coach doesn't finally figure how to neutralize Wilfork and exploit all our injuries and inexperience on the Dline.

:wha:As much as I'd like to see him contribute as a matter of human decency I'd rather see him never play again than risk permanent injury.
