One other note about the INT stats: if you look at it on a per pass play basis, the Patriots aren't first in INTs (b/c teams pass against the Patriots more than almost any other team), but the JEST are still dead last in INTs even by that measure.

December PPG
Patriots: 10

:rocker:

It's really not fair to the poor Jets to look at it this way. The Jets were averaging 10.1 points per game after just the 1st game of December. How could they possibly keep up with the Patriots after that?

The Pats stat is nice since it is the result of playing three playoff teams and the bumbling Bills.

I have to think about it some more... kind of leaning towards the Jets but I hate the Jets so I can't pick them...

Interesting, in PPG the Patriots have almost caught the Jets.

2010 NFL Team Total Stats - National Football League - ESPN

19. 8 Jets
20.4 Patriots

I bet that the Pats defense has a better ppg after week 17 than the Jets. Both have home divisional games - Jets-Bills Pats-Fins. If the Bills score 15 more points than the Fins, the Pats will finish with a better ppg by .1 of a point. Go Buffalo!!

That would, presumably, be a kick in the teeth to the Jets and their fans - to have their "mighty" defense outplayed by the young Patriots. Of course, they will still point to total defense and say that their defense is better because, yoiu know, its yards that count and not points allowed.

Honestly, I like the fact that the nationwide perception of our defense is that it is weak - opposing teams won't know what hit them.

Future quote prediction from an opponent TBD: "I felt like we moved the ball, I just wish we'd been able to put more points on the board"

I've been thinking this for a while.

Can you imagine how we'd be feeling this week if BB had said what Ryan said about the focus of the Jets practice this week? (We need to work on our fundamentals and tackling).

Ha - right! Aren't these things that you're supposed to work on in the preseason? Aren't the Jets loaded with veterans for whom stuff like this should be second nature?

In his pressers, Pete Carroll would come out and say that during the post-Parcells Patriots annual mid-season swoon and it always brought a WTF to my mind.

Lack of focus. Lack of accountability. Lack of discipline.

Jets' D is old and slow. :D

Great point about the tackling.

There have been a number of very important open-field tackles this season that I feel have been missing since 2007.

Not flashy stuff like the fumbles, or interceptions, but in the grand scheme of things, just as important.

I am very excited to see this defense evolve over the next few years. With so many young guys who seem to get better every week, they have nowhere to go but up.

Up until the last 5-6 weeks, and certainly before the preseason, I would have wanted the Jets' D. What is clear is that a) something is wrong in the Jets' camp and b) the Pats' D has improved a rate much faster than most of us would have thought possible.

At this point, I like the Pats' D and its improvements. Whether this D is good enough to stop a red-hot QB like Brees or Ryan on top of their game is a different matter, but the progress is astounding all the same.

Great point about the tackling.

There have been a number of very important open-field tackles this season that I feel have been missing since 2007.

In 2008, in 703 defensive snaps they allowed 70 plays of 20+ yards.

In 2009, in 698 defensive snaps, they allowed 59 plays of 20+ yards.

In 2010, in 678 defensive snaps they have allowed 60 plays of 20+ yards.

In 2003, in 729 defensive snaps they allowed 44 plays of 20+ yards.

So not sure if they are better tacklers, but my eyes do agree with you. Compared to 08, this D is better at not giving up the big play and maybe not as good in 09. What we do know is that the 2010 D is averaging a full yard less per completion against than both the 2008 and 2009 defenses. Thats pretty substantial.

2007 is the same as 2010. 2006 D allowed the same yards per pass that 2008 & 2009 did. 2003 was the lowest of them all and actually 2010 is pretty close to that. Interesting.

One thing is for sure, 2010 D is incredible in forcing TOs and better in the red zone which is saving their bacon.
