Hi all,
Was just reading through some past notes on the games and Steve Maneri's name keeps popping up as a guy who is winning a black shirt for his efforts in practice the previous week. I hate to admit it, but I know nothing about this guy and was wondering what, if anything, you all knew about him. Is he a rookie? Where did he come from? Does he have potential to be more than a scrappy practice team player?

thanks

Okay, So to answer some of my own questions I did some research(what a concept, huh) Former TE who played at Temple, 6'6" 290 lbs. I know BB and DS like those TE conversions because they typically have good feet and move well. I found some pictures of him at Houstons camp, looked like he needed to add some bulk, but has the frame, and it sounds like he has a good work ethic if he is always winning the practice awards.

Project tackle. Who knows what the future holds.

He's apparently never played tackle, so the conversion could be a while.

Consider: He's got a better chance of making it than Neal did. As far as I know, Neal's one of a kind, while there are quite a few tackles in the NFL who started as tight ends (Vollmer is one of them, I believe). I'll never bet against a Coach Scar project. Intriguing guy for the future.

I also read a scouting report about him coming out of college and it said that he was probably the best blocking TE in the draft and that is what he excelled at. At6-6, 290lbs running a 4.8 40, that is something to work with I think.

I have high hopes for him. I'd love see him as the third tackle as early as next season

Just doing a little more reading on the kid and that is spot-on. 6-6 290. He would be a mammoth TE. Sheesh.

More of an athlete than a road grader, seems to fit the model for an OT. Good to see someone young in the mix. If this kid's for real (and his practice effort seems promising), then maybe we don't need to spend a high pick at OT in 2011 or 2012.

Pats need a yard. Line up Gronkowski, Crumpler and Maneri in a 3TE formation, with Connolly at FB. Power sweep to the area that Cromartie is covering.

LOL. He'll fall down first.

I'm pretty sure the Pats put in 8 OL for a QB sneak earlier this season:eek:

6'7.1" at his pro day. :D (He played TE around 270 lbs.)

After a year on Pats PS, he'll probably get his shot next year in camp....everyone knows how BB loves versatility in a player....

I think we will get a better clue on his development come april. If the Patriots go with a Tackle early in the draft it could mean he is still a ways away from developing. If they go with the mid to late round pick, you have to think it might be because of his development.

4.8 40?!! That sounds like a future kick returner to me now that Dan Connolly has blazed the trail for big men.

It will be interesting to see how things go with Maneri. He was an excellent blocker. Think, better than Kyle Brady when Kyle was excellent at run blocking.

He's also a former basketball player, though adding 30 lbs since the combine may have slowed him up a bit, he's still been a great find for the Pats. And, with how quickly BB and DS have jettisoned some "project" O-linemen in the past, I think this kid could be seeing time the next year or two ala Ashworth and Gorin.

I don't think the Pats draft choices will be influenced at all by the status of the players on the roster.

These type of players makes a secondary contribution, in that they add a dynamic to the competition on the team. The established guys can never fully relax, as the coaching staff is clearly working with youngsters as future players. This, I think, is one of the differences between the Pats, Steelers, and Colts, and the Jets/Chargers and other celebrity focused teams.
