Interesting that Rob Rang's 12-21-10 mock has us taking Mallett at #15. Anybody else think we need to draft a QB in the first round?

Mallett will be a starting QB in the NFL, he bounced around colleges because he had to leave Michigan due to the coaching change. He has the size and arm strength to be an NFL QB. TFB has said that he wants to play until his arm falls off, I don't think that the Pats need to start thinking about his eventual replacement anytime soon. My best bet is the Pats next starting QB is in Jr High right now..................

Mallet getting picked at #15 maybe correct, it just won't be the Patriots making the selection.

Hell no. It makes no sense at all to pay a top-15 pick to sit on the bench for at least 4 seasons before ever having a chance of being a starter. Whoever did that mock is now officially an idiot.

The only contact I want Mallett having with our team is when Wilfork bellyflops on him. The guy is absolutely NOT Patriots material, and we have TFB locked up for a few more years.

I wouldnt mind grabbing Andy Dalton in the 5th and trying to develop him but those early picks are reserved for high need positions.

They need to load up on the DL and grab a OL within the first 3 picks.

Malleat or even more likely Locker could be the Pats pick. BB believes in drafting for best value. They do not projec to have a low pick like this for the next 4-6 years, and I expect the roster to expand in size to be able to carry a "developmental" QB. So why not?

There is no need to rush his development either; but after four years of grooming, like Cassel, I'd think he would be ready to start sharing some time. Look at a Montana and Young, that extended the 49ers run...

If you're looking at a list-only mock, I think it's just a typo (NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com has Mallett going #15—to TEN).

If you actually have Rang explaining why the Pats might take Mallett, that's another matter altogether.

That would be shocking. If they're looking for Brady's replacement, I can't imagine they'd draft him and let him develop for 3 or 4 years. And BB's never spent more than a 3rd on a QB, and even that didn't work out so well (KOC).

Then again, I've learned to never assume anything with BB. But I would be more surprised than usual if Mallett was the pick. I've seen Locker a few times and while I'm no scout, he seems the exact opposite of Tom Brady in almost every single way.

False alarm. He has us taking Adrian Clayborn. That's almost as bad though.

How does spending a high pick on a guy who won't get any playing time for years give you the best value? I want to win a SB, this year and the next, Locker sitting on the bench doesnt help you do that and it means you don't have a guy on the field who could.

With you here, If the pats take Clayborn I'll eat my hat. :p

That guy was thoroughly unimpressive in the insight bowl. Not to mention he just doesn't fit in our 3-4. He is probably a 4-3 DT on the next level. Doesn't seem like the "space eater" Bill has been looking to in our D-Line lately

Yeah, the posts on here saying that Clayborn should cut weight to play OLB tells everyone exactly what they need to know about his fit as a DE.

Clayborn had a good junior year.Just had a down year.

Watching Mallet play against Ohio State now. He doesn't look so impressive. Yeah he made a couple of nice throws near the end of the first half. But where was he the rest of the game?

Of course Ohio State defense is also making him uncomfortable. I've got my eye on Cameron Heyward too. Hmmm is the big guy worth a 2nd round pick for the Pats?

Heyward was in the backfield all night, he made himself some money last night.......

It was like a man against boys. The only way they stopped him was to tackle him..Mallet had no time to throw and the pocket collapsed it seemed on every play...
Oh and Mallett's receivers didn't do him any favors dropping balls all night long from start to finish. If they catch a few of them, maybe the game is different.....

Cassel never "shared" time on the field. The only reason he played was because Tom had a season ending injury. At the end of his season, they traded him because his stock was high and they saw he deserved to start. He had a total of 39 attempts in 3 years here before that year. He also was a 7th round draft pick, not a 1st...so they could justify having him sit for four years.

Mallet or Locker will not be drafted by the Patriots. Belichick will trade the pick to another team for two lower picks before he does that. Using a first round draft pick on a guy who will not sniff the playing field for at the very minimum four years is not a "value pick". As long as Brady is here, he will be the starting QB week in and week out. This is not McNabb we're talking about, Brady is not going to be benched.

Its performances like these that really make me worry about Heyward, because why hasn't he done this all year. He obviously has the talent to make a huge impact but just hasn't shown up in so many games. This means that consistency and motivation are obviously a problem for him which is more concerning for me than a lack of talent. Give me a solid guy that gives everything he has for 60 min over a guy that only plays when he wants to.

In regards to Mallet, his recievers let him down from the very first pass of the game. the first two plays were great passes and easy first down catches dropped by his recievers. That just kills their energy at the start of the game and slows down any chance of building momentum early. If that first pass is caught for a TD the entire game could have been different.

This pretty much sums up my impressions for both Heyward and Mallett.

Mallet took some criticism from Herbstreit this morning on "Mike & Mike" for not "playing well under pressure". It was like criticizing a guy for not being able to get a match lit while standing under Niagara Falls.

The Buckeyes' pressure was nearly instantaneous all night and Mallet did very well to avoid it on numerous occasions, buying enough time to get off at least a marginally catchable pass. When he was given time to throw, he was pretty accurate (even into some fairly decent OSU coverage) and demonstrated more than NFL-adequate arm strength - and then his receivers failed him miserably. Considering the circumstances that Mallet was playing through, I think it's pretty amazing that he didn't throw a pick until there was under a minute left in the game.

What impressed me about Heyward was not just his own pass-rush success, but the way his pressure enabled the guys around him to succeed. Also, he played the run very well for the most part. Overall, I thought he demonstrated skills, technique and awareness that would fit very well in a BB 3-4 DE role. If he follows this performance up with solid Senior Bowl practices and performance, there's no way Heyward makes it to #17 and he may not even make it out of the top ten.

Why spend a high draft pick on a guy who, apparently has a non-existant work-ethic and would spend the next few years sitting on the bench, when could grab a guy that can help us win NOW?

it especially makes no sense when we consider that we have a very capable backup in Hoyer.
