How important are individual milestones?

The Pats will look to acheive some individual milestones this weekend. The 1000 yard mark for BJGE is a big one, not only for Benny, but the O-line as well. Gronk is currently tied with Vataha and Colclough for the most TD's by a Pats rookie. I think getting him his 10th TD would be viewed as a group accomplishment by all the tight ends. All depends on the achievement I guess. Some are financial. Some are personal validation that they have arrived.

I will say that if I were BJGE, as an undrafted FA who has busted his ***** to make the roster and perform, having a 1,000 yard season has to be pretty important to him.

Some players have individual numbers that are tied to performance incentives. I recall Dillon having an escalator that if he hit 1600 yards, he got $100k or something.

I know the guys say it won't matter but I'm sure it's crossed their minds.

Also, if Gronk scores another TD, he'll also have the most TDs by a New England TE in a single season. He's currently tied with Coates.

They're pretty much irrelevant to me. I thought Brady and Moss breaking records on the same play was cool. But otherwise, I don't really care. I like what the records mean but not really what they "represent" -- for example, going lots of pass attempts without a pick is great because it means there wasn't a pick. That Brady has done it more than anyone else is moderately interesting to me in the sense that it's a good benchmark for adjuding his qualities, but really I don't care.

If the players care, more power to them. I don't really care if a guy gets fired up by a contract incentive, a milestone, or a pre-game pizza. So long as he's fired up.

With respect to milestones in general, I hate to be a wet blanket, but I've never really understood the obsession with round numbers. If BJGE gets to 1,000, I'm sure we'll hear how he's the "first Patriot since Corey Dillon to get to 1,000 yards."

It's like an oxymoron to me. If you want to celebrate the nice big round number, fine. If you want to celebrate doing something nobody else has done in 6 years, that's fine too. But to do them in same sentence is ridiculous. Here's a newsflash. Let's say BJGE only gets to 995 yards. He's still the "first Patriot since Corey Dillon to get to 995 yards."

I dont think he specifically cares about the individual goals but I think he definitely likes the idea of rewarding guys for the work they put in.

And further more he is very much a historian of the game and I dont think he cares spefically about what individual goals might be ahead I think he respects it when things are broken and even gets a little kick out of it.

I dont think he is sitting there saying I have to get this guy X so he can break this record or pass this milestone but when brought to his attention he respects and gets a kick out of it.

Obviously the only important statistic is wins and losses, but I'll admit I enjoy looking at milestones. Perhaps it is nostalgia, comparing current players to past players; maybe it's just something to look at and discuss while waiting for the next game.

As far as the players go, though they won't admit it I don't see how they would not be proud of the achievements. That goes not just for individual players, but entire units; when a running back or quarterback set a mark, that reflects on the offensive line and their ability to block effectively, for example.

I wasn't aware of Brady having a chance to become the sixth different quarterback to throw at least one touchdown pass in all sixteen games. When I tried to decode Belichick's comments yesterday on how he would approach the game at Miami, I thought there was a good chance the Pats would start Hoyer; now I'm thinking he let's him play a series or two first.

We've seen from productions like "America's Game" that he players do follow certain stats, like the record winning streak. They just don't talk to the media about it. I would say from reading Mankins' statement, I would say getting Benny 1000 is important.

I see certain "goals" like 1k, 14-2, homestreak staying alive easily attainable. The Dolphins have nothing to playfor and want to go home uninjured just as bad as we do. This is also basically a preseason game for the dolphins, i see them playing alot of backups to evaluate who they want to keep on their roster for next season.
