OT: Norv Turner will remain Chargers coach in 2011

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will return in 2011, club president Dean Spanos told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Thats good news, we won't have to worry about SD again next year.

This is great news, as we play the Chargers next year. Hopefully Norv can hang on long enough that we get to play his half-asleep, disorganized rabble of a team.

Poor chargers fans, maybe 2012 will be their year. We already know what will happen in 2011. Chargers will start out 1-3 and then maybe sneak into the playoffs late if the chiefs don't win the division again. If they do probably an early playoff exit.

Smith is regarded as one of the best GMs in the business.

As Chargers coach, Turner has a 40-23 record and is 3-3 in the playoffs with an AFCCG game appearance. Not bad by mortal standards.

I think these slow starts have everything to do with the team's mindset and that is the responsibility of their coach.

If they miss the playoffs next year due to another slow start, I expect Turner to be fired.

Wouldn't surprise me, Kid Brady. Especially with some of the coaches who came in like Garrett and Fraizer and still got their teams to play hard.

Seriously, how many years of slow starts and flaming out in the playoffs is Spanos going to put up with. With the talent the Chargers have had the last decade, they should have at least one Super Bowl appearance, nevermind a win.

People constantly biatch on this board about how the Pats waste years of Brady with not giving him the best weapons possible. How about the Chargers wasting the River years. Yes, Rivers is still young (although he is a year away from 30), but his shelf-life is limited like every other QB. They already wasted the Tomlinson years. Brady had 3 Super Bowl rings by 29 and his fourth Super Bowl appearance at 30. Rivers will be at least 30 before he wins his first Super Bowl if he ever wins one.

He may be 40-23. But, he took over a young team that was 14-2 and M. McCree from falling down to possibly win the Super Bowl. That 06 team would have waxed the Colts in SD. I have one word to say about this news. NORV

Spanos apparently hasn't put 2 + 2 together yet. I did hear a while ago he had alzheimers. Firing coaches and jettisoning entitled players has been tried and failed. AJ is the problem. He's the cash strapped talent whore GM with the ego problem and that keeps that team confounding mediots from coast to coast. He's spent the last several season blowing smoke up so many talented asses he couldn't afford to pay and created little monsters that don't know what it takes to actually win something... And he ran away from a challenge like Brees presented due to size and injury like he had the plague. It will take a full blown culture change to turn that franchise around and those start from the top down. So on some level Spanos himself is the real problem. And maybe even SD. I know they have to grapple with the occasional canyon fire and mudslides, but by and large they're a vacation destination and I think adversity (be it personal or geographic or whatever wise) plays a part in building championdhip caliber teams...

I've thought about that. If SD wins in 06, they would have gotten Indy at home for the AFCCG. But in 06, Indy was on one of those mystical carpet rides. However, we now know that SD matches up very well with Indy. Would have been a helluva game.

There is always the Shottenheimer factor so you are probably right.

With that said Kaeding has single handily cost them two playoff games so he hasn't helped matters much.

His record is irrelevant, he has a very talented team. If they played disciplined football and got some bad breaks it would be one thing, but the team I saw against the Patriots should have worn long floppy shoes and come out of a tiny car onto the field.

For everything a coach should instill they show a lack.

The funny thing is, the Jets went to Pittsburgh the following week, and did the same stupid thing. After it almost cost them the game in SD (courtesy of Herm Edwards). The Chargers have to be one of the most talented teams to have not won, or at least sniff the super bowl, and the crazy thing is it mostly falls on the coaches they have hired.
