....I'm having a little trouble putting this entire season into perspective. In one sense who can argue that the Pats have elevated themselves into being the clear favorite to represent the AFC in the Superbowl. In another sense it just doesn't compute.

How can a defense that starts Eric Moore and Landon Cohen qualify as superbowl favorites?

When was the last time 2 RBs on the top scoring offense in the league, were UDFAs who started the season as the 4th RB and not even on the team respectively

How does an offense lose a HOF WR in the middle of the year....and get better

How does the OL maintain integrity when it loses its all pro LG for more than half the season, then its all pro RG..... and then loses his back up

You would think that losing your best defensive lineman (Ty Warren) and your best and most experienced DB (Leigh Boddin), your defense would be horrible....and we weren't disappointed, were we. Yet somehow this "horrible defense" ended up with a 13-2 record and is leading the league in picks

Common wisdom states (I think it was Parcells) that for every rookie you start, you will lose a game. Well the Pats have 8 who have started games or played key roles (Spikes, McCoourty, Gronk, Hernandez, Cunningham, Deadrick, Love, and Fletcher) Now how has that worked out?

You start your season thinking that your DL would be TWarren, Wilfolk, and Wright. More than solid I think. Well then Ty goes down but you don't panic because GWarren looks to be at least a quality run stuffer. Well then Wright, Pryor, Brace, and then GWarren himself all go down at one time or another. The next thing you know your DL consists of Wilfolk (thank god) and refugees from the UFL and thin book of Jewish football players (...and yes I know he's not Jewish, but I couldn't resist the metaphor),

You have no pass rush (so I'm told)

you can't stop the run (so I'm told)

You see where I'm going with this. 13-2, Superbowl Favorites, media darlings vs inexperienced, no named, injury ridden, overacheivers. These 2 images just DON'T seem to compute, How can the Pats be Favorites to reach the superbowl when there are so many "weaknesses"/"flaws" that even their own fans can see.

I fear no potential team that may come into Foxboro during the playoffs, yet I can see where everyone of them could potentially beat my team.

I AM SO CONFUSED!!!!!

And so my good friend must you be too, and that is why I call on all of us to start to view this season with a little perspective. Think back to 2001, when we were all kind of proud that our team (the one ProFootball Weekly had labelled LEAST likely to win a superbowl in the next 5 years just that spring) managed to play a competitive game with the Rams and go into the last 3rd of the season at 500 with a reasonable chance to make the playoffs

Think about how good it felt when we won the division and would host a home playoff game. Think about the moment when Woodson knocked the ball out of Brady's hand and you thought, "too bad, but what I nice season", because you had never heard about the tuck rule. Think about how you tried to think of scenarios that would get a win the next week in Pittsburgh, and how you failed to think of any reasonable ones. And finally, if you are really honest, how you were just happy they made it to the superbowl and how you hoped that they'd somehow make a game of it, for at least the first half. How you didn't want to see a repeat of the Bears embarrassment ;)

You see folks, THAT is what THIS season is all about. Like 2001 THIS is the gift season. The one we didn't expect. If BB was truly honest, he'd tell you that this personnel turnover was all planned. That the idea was to rebuild the team over 3 years. Be competitive, have winning seasons, but the real push for the superbowl would be in 2012 or perhaps 2011 if we were really lucky.

Just like 2001 it wasn't expected. THAT was supposed to be just the year the Pats started to learn to win again.....maybe make the playoffs....maybe. No, I'm sure on BB's blueprint, 2003 was the target year to make a real run at the superbowl. That one in 2001 was THE GIFT, the surprise no one expected. Just as this one will be.....if we get there.

So my advise is much like BB's. Avoid the hype. Don't by into the notion that its Superbowl or Bust. Enjoy this gift of a season, win or lose, because that is what this is.....a gift. and a unexpected one at that.

********************************************************************
Now just some idle thoughts.

1. BB has had a great year with low impact FA signings. But Page and GWareen have both proven excellent additions. Nothing spectacular, but just what the team needed. Someone posted a good article on Warren and he sounds like a man. A Bobby Hamilton/Anthony Pleasant kind of signing.

2. In the article they describe how he got here and how the experience has exceeded his expectations. This is why quality FAs will always give the Pats a look. Some may want to go and be buddies with Rex and have fun. But the ones that add value to your team will want to come here and get better and win. BTW- next off season will have one of the deepest and riches FA classes in the FA era.

3. The raiders pick in the draft (probably around $15) is going to be the subject of a lot of speculation, but its the Carolina pick (#33) that will have the most value in the end. This is the pick that will allow us to move up significantly in to get some targeted player. This is the pick that will attract a hundred phone calls if we still have it at the end of the first day

4. I hope Alge Crumpler stays another year. What a mentor. Gronk couldn't get over there fast enough after Alge's TD catch.

5. Both rookie TEs have exceeded expectations, and those expectations were high.

6. I know we had a guy at the commissioners mtging, any report on what went on? If there was please direct me. If not....what happened??????!!!!!

7. I'd like to see use FAKE the bubble screen and throw over the top either to a crossing WR or have the bubble screen guy do a double move. Those guys are screaming up to the LOS real fast. Its a play teams are preparing well for.

8. Fun fact I heard but cannot prove. Someone on the radio today noted that since 2001 the Pats are something like 85-3 when they win the turnover battle. That's just in case you haven't figured out how we managed to be 13-2 ;)

9. In the same vein, we are now +27 an AMAZING feat. In fact IIRC, its the 2nd best plus/minus in the Superbowl era. Whats even more amazing was that the best one was something like +43 by the Redskins back in the early 80's

10. OK be honest. How many of you are hoping Brady finally gets picked off and BJGE fumbles in this last meaningless game. Its bound to happen. Why not let it happen when no one cares. Right? Then we can start a NEW streak.

OK that's a start. BTW- sorry about my last effort. It sucked. Hope this one is better.

Great post. I struggle with much the same issues.

Perhaps it's because in a way this has been three seasons in one:

Games 1-4... the Randy Moss offense, and the raw rookie defense.

Games 5-8... the redesign of the offense, and the gradual transition of the D, with the speed bump letdown game at Cleveland.

Games 9-present... Patriots 2010 release 3.0. DEFINITELY an upgrade. :D

Your perspective opening should be published...well said.
As far as your idle thoughts...#3 has got me thinking 3 and 4 years from now. Our productive 2nd round picks...Seabass, Gronk, Cunningham, Spikes...can only be signed to 4 year rookie deals...and because they didn't earn the big paydays like #1s, they may be inclined to chase dollars in the free agent market.
So here is the question...Do you think BB looks that far into the future and would push picks back with '13 and'14 in mind.
Another way to look at the draft ahead, use some late rounders to move up #33 into the first round to gain an extra year of control of a rookie.

Great stuff as always. It's definitely a compliment to this franchise that the team is not seen nationally as upstarts or over-achievers. It's more like "the Patriots are doing what they always do." If you think about it, it's quite a statement.

Had to laugh at your call for a fake bubble screen; I posted a similar suggestion in the last Jets game thread. Would love to see it. Makes me think of the Brady-to-Givens pump-fake-and-go TD vs Indy in I think the 03-04 AFCCG, still one my all-time favorite Pats plays. That play and a direct snap to Woodhead must be in the playbook somewhere, just waiting for the playoffs. :D

yea, i hate saying i want brady to throw a pick, and BJ to fumble, and for us to have a turnover as a team

but every time those graphics come up on the screen it reeks of the "announcer jinx"

hasnt worked yet, hopefuly it wont this season, but i will only be half sad if any of these streaks end before the playoffs begin

Polian would probably tell Brady to throw a pick on purpose.

This is exactly how I think and feel about this year. Anything we do in the playoffs is just icing on the cake for me.

We've exceeded all expectations and I don't think there was but one or two posters that predicted 14-2 or better. I guessed 12-4 and thought that was pushing it.

We basically have 3 first round picks for next season, and that is.. just a bit scary.

Yea I hear you. Those are two pretty incredible streaks. But they way I look at is is that Brady is better than Kosar so there is no reason he can't keep it going and a guy like Freeman McNeil who had similar numbers to BJGE to start his career can go 8 years and not fumble, why can't he?

Phenomenally fantastic post, Patfanken! Really really well done. Thanks for taking the time to type that. IMO (Hey, I've never used that abbreviation before. Yay me. lol.) (Oh, was "yay me" too gay for a big and burly footbawl board with the likes of male curmudgeons like Wickedpissah around? Well tough boogies.) Anyway, IMO, there's not enough quality posting like yours around most of the time and I appreciate finding yours.

Now, on to the matter(s) at hand. I feel the same as you about not believing the defense has held up so well with so few name players on it.
I listen to WFAN here in NYC and the main honcho down here on the air, Mike Francesa, has been hammering The Patriots defense ALL YEAR LONG. Just today, he says that they haven't really beaten a quality offense in the NFC like Atlanta's or New Orleans'. He says they'll be exposed if they meet either in The Super Bowl. Or Vick.
He went on down the line and compared The Pats defensive players position by position and couldn't come up with anyone who could (and I quote) "really play" aside from Wilfork, Mayo, and McCourty. He said The Jets have better personnel and a better defense by far.
Oh, and listen to this one. He then went on to say The Jets have a better offensive line. (huh??? You can't be serious.)
He finished up with- The Jets are a better team except at quarterback & coach.
Mike Francesa has ALWAYS refused to give New England barely any credit throughout the year. What a total douche.

It's almost like The Pats defense has been a smoke & mirrors act this year. I mean, The Jets game got out of hand early, The Bears game too. It's not like they beat them on a normal day. The snow changed everything. And The Packers had a nobody at quarterback. Peyton Manning was one altered throw away from beating them too. Only Pittsburgh was a really convincing performance & that's with Heinz Ward out the whole game, pretty much. The Ravens game was a really kick butt performance, but that was a while ago. That was like the only time they played like a Super Bowl caliber D.

Too many loopholes for my liking to feel very confident about the defense.

Thanks again for your informative post, man.

Great stuff as usual, Ken.

As someone who has rooted for the team for some 38 years, this past decade has truly been a Golden Age and one I am so happy to have been able to witness. I tale every win as a blessing, and every success as a gift, because there were years that we couldn't BUY a win.

Thanks again for your post. I always enjoy reading them.

In regard to the Brady and Firm streaks, I'd like to see them continue. It's not like the odds will increase if they "get it out of the way" against the Fins. Those aren't lucky streaks, they are skill and determination streaks. Now Welker is a different story - I'm glad he had those 3 drops yesterday. He may have been getting a little ****y with his ability to catch the ball and those drops will make him concentrate extra hard through the playoffs. I predict no more drops for Welker.

This run...the Bill Belichick era as it should be called...is without question, the greatest run of football success in the modern era of sports.

It has brought out the worst in everyone (outside of the REAL Patriot fans).

From ex-players (Marshall Faulk, Tom Jackson, Mark Schlereth, etc...) and current players (Terrell Suggs, Ladanian Tomlinson, etc. )...

To National sports writers...Greg Easterbrook, Peter King (to some degree)etc, etc...

And this list could go on and on about people who loathe our existence...because of the success we've had...

I want Tom Brady to win the MVP. I know that he doesn't care about it...and I love that about him...but he should have had at least 4 by now and yet, we have to hear over and over about how "Peyton Manning" is the best QB in the league...When we all know deep down that he is just another Dan Marino.

I look forward to the day when every one of these POS's reluctantly and hatefuly admit...that the Patriots are the greatest dynasty in pro football.....ever. To admit that they were wrong for writing and saying scathing and hatred words for the world to hear and read about how Belichick was a cheater and Manning was better than Brady and to have these words burn thier toungue's black.

Yeah..you could say that I'm tired and pissed off and needed to get this off my chest.

I want the Patriots to unleash an unholy hell upon any team that steps on our field with misguided dreams of winning there.

I want the Colts, the Jets, the Ravens and the Steelers to know utter and complete defeat.....that it was folly to think you could beat the Patriots.

Yup. I'm ready for the playoffs to start....

The hate for the Patriots is crazy, I've never seen anything like it.

The stats major in me says that it doesn't matter if Brady throws a pick or Benny fumbles, because anything that happens in the postseason is independent of what happens week 17

Don't hold back. Please tell us how you really feel. Pure passion.

Simple: BB has built a TEAM. It's not a group of individuals.

PatsfanKen.. your best post eva.. most of what you pose is what makes this team special and very interesting...

Someone said earlier today we went from probably one of the worst TE grouping to one of the best in the NFL cannot downplay the influence of Crumpler on Gronk and Hernandez..

If you check out Reiss last post it validates it even more.. 22 of our roster were drafted 1-3...

39 Players are 6th round to FA...

Plays to the chip on the shoulder mentality.. which seems rampant...

You are speaking my mind, warm weather bro...
Lets not forget the lovely Cris "Branch is just a guy" Carter!

Or Modesty Shaunessy's comment that dealing Moss proved that BB had given up on the season!
Heh.
That one may actually out pace Borges for Dumb of the Decade.

Some unanimity with your, and my enthusiasm comes from, of all places, NY's Mike Lupica:
Super Bowl title was great feat, but Giants need to prove they are not one-hit wonders
"Tom Brady is the MVP of the league.
By any measure.
One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time is having a season as great as anything we have ever seen from him. And without disparaging Vick, and his own season, and one of the great sports comebacks of all time, Brady should still win the thing going away.

By the way?
If Brady does go to a fifth Super Bowl and win his fourth, it won't be such a difficult thing to call him the best to ever play the position."

Great, enjoyable season, by any measure.
Thanks Pats!
