There are a number of ways this could go:

(1) The Pats drafting for value if a major talent (e.g., a Julio Jones-type);
(2) The Pats drafting a potential replacement for a current receiver;
(3) The Pats ignoring WR altogether during the draft and maybe bringing in a couple of UDFAs for a look-see (in addition to/instead of the ones on military reserve).

So use this thread to discuss strategies, or specific players.

One interesting player that was mentioned on another thread was Matt Szczur [rather improbably pronounced "caesar"], from Villanova (home of the Ventrone brothers).

To quote one paper (quoting Mike Mayock):

Villanova's two-sport stud, Matt Szczur, is going to have to decide between football and baseball soon. He was a fifth-round pick of the Cubs last June and hit .347 for three of their minor league clubs. But NFL scouts are intrigued by the versatile, 202-pound running back/wide receiver/quarterback/kick returner with 4.4 speed. He's been invited to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., next month along with one of his 'Nova teammates, offensive tackle Ben Ijalana.

"He's the real deal," said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. "He's a slot receiver who compares favorably to any of those quicker-than-fast receivers you see in the NFL. When you start talking about Danny Woodhead or Davone Bess or Wes Welker, those kind of guys, that's who (Szczur) is.

"He's physical. He's tough. He returns kicks. He covers kicks. In their playoff win over Appalachian State, he was involved in their first five touchdowns. He ran for three, threw one and caught one."

"What I love about him is there's little to no downside (to drafting him). Worst-case scenario, you're going to get a heckuva special-teams player. But a creative coach (paging Andy Reid, paging Bill Belichick), the sky could be the limit."

I feel like the Pats need to take him just to keep him away from all the other teams! :lol2:

One of BB's draft mandate, if you will, is that football has to be the most important thing in someone's life. Guys who can't pass that test, usually wind up as UDFA's for BB.

At WR we currently have 3 smurfs, Welker, Branch and Edelman; a kick returner, Tate, and a conversion project, Price.

I think BB definitely takes a WR somewhere in this draft. And again I have to go back to BB's value drafting philosophy. Does a Green, Jones, Floyd, Hankerston or Blackmon represent value early in the draft? I tend to think no.

Regardless a WR or two is going to drop/fall/slide and with all the picks BB has,he has the flexibility to work in a WR if he wants.

One other point is that if a run on WR happens at some point in this draft, I do not expect BB to panic and make a move.

We'll know before the draft where Szczur's priorities lie, for two reasons: (A) he plays CF, not pitcher, so his path to the bigs is a wee bit harder than, say, Jeff Samardzija's was, and (B) he has a $500,000 signing bonus if he reports to the Cubs before 2/15—which would preclude his participating at a combine/pro day.

Trade for Steve Smith, draft Randall "Tex" Cobb and/or Leonard Hankerson.

Steve Smith? Why? He's exactly the opposite of what our offense is about. I don't think BB wants to add another 30+ year old receiver for the money Smith will want.

The kid from Troy or a kid like Titus Young can be available in the 3rd round.

At this point in his career I dont think money is even close to the first thing on his mind, I think he wants to win a ring and would take less money to do so, I could be wrong though.

I really like Jernigan from Troy WR. He is that 5'9" quick as a cat waterbug type WR that BB loves. He should be there in the third and that is the round that BB going fishing the most. Depending on how he runs at the combine, you may have found a diamond in the rough.

I would say he is much more polished at this stage of his college career than Roberts of the Citadel was last year and I think Roberts went in the third #88 overall.

Roberts was one of my binkies last year, and he just had a 100+ yard receiving game. I really liked him last year, and he seems to be picking up his game. I've only seen one of Jernigan's games, and I liked what I saw, but for a speed guy, he sure doesn't seem to average very many yards per catch (just over 10, which is more Welker territory than, say, Branch territory). If you say he's more polished than Roberts, though, than I'm intrigued. I always respect your opinion. :)

Steve Smith of Carolina who busted a teammates' jaw or Steve smith of giants who busted a teammates jaw in college?

As I've stated before I like Hankerson but only in the early 3rd not the 2nd.

3A. Leonard Hankerson – WR Miami (6-3/215)
Senior, 2010 Team Captain. All ACC First team in 2010. Third player in Miami history to record 1000 yd season (Eddie Brown-1983, Andre Johnson-2002) and first to have 2000 yds in career and 1000 yds in a season. 12 TD’s in 2010 broke Michael Irvin’s mark of 11 set in 1986. Top Senior WR but because there are so many Junior WR’s coming out he slips a little bit. Should provide good competition for Tate/Edleman for the 3rd WR spot and could eventually be the replacement for Branch.

BB will draft a WR -- if a premium player falls to him when he is picking. Just like the 2010 draft. BB traded up a few spots to grab GRONK. Then, he couldn't believe his good fortune -- Aaron Hernandez was waiting for NE in the 4th round. That is a gift. So, if the right WR -- one BB believes will succeed in NE with the right work ethic and character -- is available, BB will draft him irrespective of need.

We have Price in waiting, as well as Tate to hopefully expand his role. I don't see BB drafting a WR in the first three rounds unless somehow one of the top WRs fall to us. No way he trades up for a WR. Chad Jackson anyone?

Each offseason we grab at least 1 vet WR to add to the kids. This year I am hoping Ocho Cinco will take a discount and come play to win...finally. This year it was Holt, last year Galloway, Gabriel, Patton, the list goes on and on. He really doesnt like drafting WRs, the jury is still out on Tate, Price and Edleman.....

YouTube - It's all about the U - HankTime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IN all of these video clips, Hankerson is getting clean release off the LOS, he needs to show me that he can battle for position and use his hands to fight off a DB.

Yesterday Carsen Palmer looked like a real NFL QB for the first time in quite a while. Was it a coincidence that both Owens and Johnson were NOT playing? I think not.

Didn't our offense take off this year when we dumped our diva WR Moss?

When it comes to Johnson, I say "just say no!"

Agreed, the only association I want OhcoIdiot to have with my team is being flattened by McCourty. We don't need or want diva WRs, I'd be all over Steve Smith from Carolina, who would be a perfect fit for this offense, and I'd also like Megatron in a few years when his contract is up with Detroit. That being said I really like Randall "Tex" Cobb from Kentucky, while not looking like a future superstar he does look like a potential Troy Brown 2.0.

We don't need divas, we need lunchbucket producers.

It's something he could learn. Most WR take 3 years to get acclimated to the NFL. That's why it's not a big deal that Price had a redshirt year this year and it is really Brandon Tate's 1st year since he was on IR his rookie season.

That's why guys like Mike Wallace showing promise this year it just takes time.

Lot of love in this thread for quick smurfs, which the team is already loaded with. Meanwhile BB's been drafting (and signing) fleet six-footers like Tate, Price and Holt. So...Torrey Smith?
