That's why the decision by the NFL and the Eagles, with input from the city of Philadelphia, to postpone last night's game because of a snowstorm that isn't really all that (we might get 11 inches in the city - not exactly Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer territory, not even close) is more than downright disappointing.

This is the height of wimpiness, and the girly-men who made this sad decision should be ashamed of themselves. The NFL has been rightfully called the No Fun League for a number of years, but this takes that to a whole embarrassing new level. In fact, let's name names here: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Eagles' owner Jeff Lurie and president Joe Banner, and Mayor Nutter - you are the Wimps Who Stole Christmas from football fans in Philadelphia.

I'd look at it from the angle of if I had bought tickets to see the game, which means your probably spending some $$$ and couldn't get there due to the weather conditions, I'd be pretty p'od.

Why let facts get in the way of political correctness. If the head politician (being the politically correct weasel all politicians are) of the State in which "fans would die" can act like he has a set, I'm pretty sure the rest of us can. Not sure where all this "fans dying" and "storm of the century" stuff is coming from, but the totals in Philadelphia don't support these contentions:

The total as of 8AM this morning was only 12" - why stop at 12" of snow? Wouldn't 5"-8" pose a substantial risk (actually during game time this is all there was)? How about freezing rain? How about bitter cold? I'm sure more than one fan's car has broken down on the way home and caused that fan to be stuck for hours in the freezing cold. Maybe the police/emergency management should make the call? With this ruling the NFL has placed itself as the arbiter of risk, from now on, as regards public safety. They shouldn't have gotten into this game. Their only concern should have been players' safety on the field. Have they set a precedent? What happens during a fan fatality the next time they decide not to postpone an event during similar conditions (say in Green Bay or Minnesota?).

I doubt the Governor would be making these statements if his State Police or Emergency Management Dept. told the NFL to cancel the event.... IMO, the NFL f----d up by setting this precedent - and that is why the Governor jumped all over them. Can anyone remember the NFL cancelling another game for "fan safety only" as the given reason?

That's definitly part of it, and now the precident is set for when the Colts, for example, have to come to Foxboro in the playoffs and flurries are predicted. You all might be singing a different tune when that happens, not if that happens.

If 50 mph winds are expectd and the governor himself is advising people to stay off the streets, then how does it make sense to have a football game? They postpone games for lightning, don't they?

Also makes for a very bad, boring game when you can't see the field and the players can't either.

Rendell is such a jerk. Of course postponing the game was the right thing to do. You don't put 70,000 fans and their vehicles in the city during a blizzard. It creates a dangerous situation for those same fans and for the crews who need to plow and/or utilize (fire, rescue, police) those streets.
