Maybe it was one hit, but the G-men are too talented to keep messing up like this. Watch for Cowher to move in as coach next year & reduce the mistakes; they're one of the most talented teams in football.

I have to disagree with this. What they did that year, go into Dallas and beat the NFC East champs, then go into Green Bay and beat the team with I believe had the most wins in the NFC. And then to beat an 18-0 team that had the greatest offense of all time, and hold us to 14 points. That was no fluke. One of the greatest performances in recent playoff history. Great defensive gameplan and execution in all 3 games. Tough words to write from a die hard Pats fan, but I believe every word of it. They were as much of a fluke as our 2001 team was.

The Giants were extremely streaky in 2007. They lost their first two games, then won 6 in a row, then went 4-4 down the stretch, almost alternating wins and losses (L, W, L, W, W, L, W, L).

They were 14th in points scored, 17th in points allowed, and 13th in point differential. They got hot at the right time and give them credit for that, but they were extremely inconsistent throughout the entire season.

The Giants have proven absolutely nothing post-2007. They had an impressive regular season only to be one and done in 2008. Will most likely miss the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. 3 seasons and zero playoff wins. If a team wants to prove they're not a fluke they need to do it on the field, everybody knows what they did in 2007 and yes it was very impressive. But the run was a fluke until proven otherwise.

And, your final sentence made my point.

Had the Pats' success stopped with SB XXXVI, you would be right. But, clearly, it did not. That's what makes the Giants "one hit wonders" or "one helmet wonders," and the Belichick/Brady Patriots one of the greatest teams in the long history of the NFL.

The Giants, over three subsequent seasons, were unable to replicate or come close to replicating that five week string, or their "one hit" (which was aided by one of the flukiest plays in the history of NFL Championships, let alone SB's).

The Pats won two of the next three SB's but the Giants, over the same period of time, not only failed to duplicate their SB win, but failed even to make the playoffs two out of those three years.

I stand by my statement.

Thanks for your point of view.

I wasn't arguing that it could "go away" for any of us (I still can't watch a tape of that game) emotionally or that we would ever see it as "ok," but simply saying that, in the long run, what happened to the Giants these last two years helps make it clear that it took luck and a fluke to keep the Patriots from winning that game.

That's a fair point and one that would be debated forever should Tommy pick up his fourth ring. The counter argument would be that Brady did it in the Cap and FA era. It's an argument that I would like to be able to have.

they said the exact same thing about manning last yr that if he wins the SB he could be the greatest ever. nothing new here

Cowher is over rated. The Steelers were for many years the toughest team that lost regularly in the playoffs because they were one dimensional.

One hit wonder or not that will never put Superbowl 42 in the Patriots cabinet. Flukes happen and unfortunately we, Patriot Nation were on the wrong end of that fluke because of a poor performance.
