Stud RB???

Not saying you are wrong, but I don't think of the Pat's OL as being run dominant.

And agree on protecting Brady for the long term, but would have thought of becoming more run oriented, like Denver did with Elway, would be the way to go.

Just to be clear, I'm NOT advocating the Pats taking Ingram or any other RB in the first round in 2011. But, I can see how they might consider doing so. Maybe not this draft, but possibly in 2012 or 2013.

The fact that Brady stays as clean as he does has as at least as much to do with his special qualities as a QB (quick/accurate reads and releases, "sixth sense" about stepping away from pressure) as it does with the pass-pro abilities of the O-line. The strength of the O-line (collectively), in fact, seems to me slightly skewed toward run-blocking ability which, in combination with Brady's short game, is primarily why the RBBC has worked using guys like Taylor, Morris, LaMont Jordan and BGE. Nothing against these RBs, but - unlike Adrian Peterson - none are likely to get significant amounts of positive yardage without solid blocking help.

Looking ahead, Brady is getting older. The particular skills that make him great aren't the type that are likely to quickly/dramatically deteriorate, but it would probably be unwise to ignore the possibility that he'll diminish a bit, gradually, over the course of this contract and into his next one. It's also really unwise to assume that his successor will be anywhere near Brady's current level wrt quick read/release (at least not at first).

So, thinking ahead, the Pats might begin moving toward an O-line that is more skewed, talent-wise, toward pass-pro and away from run-blocking (for some O-line positions, at least). If so, they may, as a consequence, need to begin moving away from relying on average/older RBs and the RBBC system back toward more of a feature back setup and an RB (or two!) who can make significant positive yards on their own without a lot of blocking help from the O-line..

Speaking of drafting a RB, I would like to see a big dude, like a Peyton Hillis, or that Kohn (sp) guy from GB last nite. A mid to late round pick.

They do well against us,,why not impart damage to the other teams.

Could help in the blitz pick-up too.

I'd be very disappointed if they drafted a RB with a top 33 pick. They have much bigger needs at LT, DE, C and G if they don't resign Mankins that require higher picks. The way the offense is playing this year, I'm not sure why anyone wants to use a high pick on a WR or a RB.

I don't wanna draft a RB period.... Sign a free agent or two if BB thinks he needs new bodies at the position.......

First 3 rounds simply have to go to the "trenches" DE, OLB, C/G and a T if Light isn't resigned.

We've got a FEVER, and the only PRESCRIPTION...is OWEN MARECIC!

He's an old school FullBack that also plays linebacker and special teams, how can BB not want him?

Brother Snake: A man after my own heart :rocker:

I have long advocated, that to achieve Unconditional Dominance, our merciless grizzlies must pave the way for a back so powerful that the earth is shaken underfoot, to its very foundations.

Bring 'em to the ol' razor! :rocker:

Glancing down the RB stat chart this year looking for a fit for the Patriots next year, DeAngelo Williams stands out. Free agent, will be 28 next year, productive with one exceptional year, 2008), injury derailed this year and missed 3 games in in 2009. 5'9", 217 lbs. No major fumble issues.

Curious what you all think would be a suitable contract for him and what his pass protection blocking skills are.
According to this article, he wishes to stay at Carolina but management has been noncommittal.

I'm not saying that the team would (much less should) become LESS run-oriented at all. Just saying that a greater O-line orientation toward pass-pro for Brady MAY result in some decline in run-blocking that MAY, in turn, require RBs who are less O-line dependent in order to maintain (or even increase) the ground game's contribution to the offense (also for Brady's benefit.

I'm just positing that such a situation could then make 1st round RBs more attractive and potentially useful to the Pats than they appear to be at the moment.

Sorry, perhaps I could have been clearer about that in my original post.

Having Corey Dillon in the backfield to close out games in '04 was what separated the Patriots from the other quality teams that year. The '09 lacked a closer and too often coughed up 2nd half leads. The BJGE/Woodhead combo has succeeded so far, but I noticed in the Green Bay game that these smallish backs did get knocked backwards more often than in other games. It would have been nice to see Brady hand off to a bulldozer and get those first downs to close out that game instead of punting and relying on the D. No team has a perfect roster and it is amazing that this team is 12-2 despite what I perceive as a thin and flawed roster. I'm hoping that Taylor has a nice run or two left in him when the team has to have a first down in the playoffs. Morris...no hope there.

Fullback has been one of this team's most underrated needs for the last couple of seasons, IMO.

We are likely to pick up a mid-level running back before the draft. I don't see a draft choice in the first two rounds in any case.

We would likely go into the draft with a running back group of
Green-Ellis, Woodhead, free agent, Morris and/or Faulk, Clayton and Kettani.

Is Kettani going to be available? I thought he had a five year term and that the military was being more demanding on their retention.

Bb has said many times that Light can't play RT well... we have a potential Pro Bowl RT in Vollmer... If you wanted someone to groom for either position later on i could understand but if light and vollmer are on the roster next year light will be starting LT and Vollmer starting RT. Thats not to mention Kazur our number 1 back up (and used to start at RT) will be back as well

Kaczur will be 31 before the next season starts. He's also going to be coming back from his back injury. Not to mention that Kaczur was only above average as a starting RT. Vollmer is very good.

I see the Pats looking at an OT in the draft. One that can play either tackle position depending on what the Pats decide to do with Vollmer. Many people felt that Vollmer was the future LT, but we don't know that. Only BB does. If he pictures Vollmer at the LT spot, then the Pats will take someone they figure will be better at RT. If the Pats have Vollmer staying at RT, then I would expect a LT to be taken.

With Light's contract up and his turning 32 prior to the start of TC, I can't see him having many more years left. And now would be a good time to draft a young kid who can develop a year or two behind Light/Vollmer/Kaczur. That way, when he steps in, he will be able to hit the ground running.

Kettani is considered a FB. And, it's my understanding that after 2 years, he can request a Stateside posting (ala Providence or even the USS Constitution) and continue to do his service time while acting as a recruiter or other position.

Snake eyes - Great pick-up on Marecic. I think he'd be a great addition to the Pats in the 5th or 6th round. Hopefully, the Pats will still have some picks in that area.

I say, "No," to the stud RB theory. In support of which I submit:

Great Blue North Draft Report

Note that the top two rookie rushers, and 3 of the top 6, are UDFA's. Sadly, RB are cannon fodder in this game, and you can get them late.

Stud doesnt necessarily mean early drafted, I think Arian Foster and Pierre Thomas are studs along with "The Coon" in Green Bay but they were all undrafted.

Given his versatility (in an emergency, he could play LB), BB could pick him in the 4th and I wouldn't mind. :)

"You're making...my point." Thread's about not drafting an RB in the first or even second round, I'm agreeing.
