I need some information to settle an arguement.....

.... Does anyone know who Parcells wanted to draft instead of Terry Glenn. I had thought it was Cedric Jones, but he was drafted before the Pats drafted at #7. What's the true story, or at least the alleged story. Documentation will help.

Ken,

Those idiots at JetsInsider aren't going to listen anyway, so not sure why you'd spend the time trying to win an argument there. Other than tweaking Jets fans after all the cr@p they've been spewing this year, I really see no other reason to post on that board.

JMHO of course.

It was absolutely Cedric Jones (and not the one who was an offensive player). Some urban myths have arisen about who Parcells wanted, but it was Jones, for sure.

The Pats DID have a WR named Cedric Jones...BTW

I heard he begged to draft Ray Lewis but ownership wanted someone who would be fans in the seats : (

I was referring to Tony Brackens being chosen over Terry Glenn.

Short term, Glenn was a better choice.

Long term, getting 8 years out of a player who had 55 sacks and 27 forced fumbles might have put the Pats in a better position.

I'd always take the DE over the WR but thats me.

Gotcha Bob. I thought you meant Parcells staying.

Believe it or not I got notes from this draft, as I kept logs of every draft during the 90's...when Jones went, the consensus at NEPats dot com was Brackens was Bill's choice...and post draft this was confirmed through many local media sources.

Then they should have traded up 2 spots in the second round and taken him, because we've all been told that Parcells came back into the room and made the rest of the picks. That's the knock against Grier anyway because supposedly after Grier picked Glenn, Parcells chose Milloy and Christian Peter, as well as a whole slew of picks who never panned out. I mean, Brackens was right there for Parcells, so either Grier gets credit for Milloy, or Parcells could have had his guy for cheap in the second round.

The problem with that though is that there's no guarantee a slight DE like Brackens (weight 260) might not have stuck around in Belichick's defense. After all, we cut Greg Spires loose and he ended up going to the Pro Bowl.

You may be right. Brackens was still a productive player in 2000 and lasted until 2003 so its not like he was washed up yet.

With his size, could he have converted into an "elephant" position as Willie Mac? Don't know.

I'm surprised there is that much evidence, but the key to that draft, IMO, is the incredible amount of top receivers available all through the draft, including Marvin Harrison and Eric Moulds, but also Terrell Owens in the third, and Joe Horn in the fifth. Probably another half dozen NFL starters.

Parcells could have traded down, got defense and still picked up an all pro receiver.

Except the fact is that McDonough reported that Parcells was interested in Kennison. Now, Kennison was OK and passable, but not a top wide receiver, and he benefited greatly from never being the #1 guy.
