Darius Butler vs. the Packers

Butler is not getting 30-40 snaps a game b/c of.....

1. Game plan vs particular opponent
2. Hes still learning from the coaches want from him
3. Hes still working on applying what the coaches want from him

BB and Butler have both said this.

Unless he is blowing off meetings or is not putting the time into preparing, that'll be the first I've heard of it.

This is really what I've heard and what I hope. Butler said himself after getting torched by Edwards that he has a ton of work to do. I hope he can progress further

Maybe they wanted a safety in because they were short DL and spikes? Just a thought. I don't think BB game plans based on not liking the guy this week.

I'm with you. It's not a coincidence that the lightest DB on the roster plays much less than usual in a game where the DL is depleted, the run-stuffing ILB is out, and an opponent with a rookie QB is running a fullback up the gut.

all the injuries on the dl and deaderick only played like 9 snaps. Not good.

I wonder why they were able to run at will on us sometimes.

As already mentioned, Deaderick was injured early in the game. The run defense was left with smoke, mirrors and Kyle Love.

All I know for sure is that he at least did not fail at all 6 of those snaps.

When J. Jones scored that long TD I didnt really see who got burned but was literally crossing my fingers that it wasnt 28. Turns out it was McCourty (thank god cause Butler cant afford to get burned, Devin can) and on the replay they showed Butler was blanketing the slot WR. And I mean BLANKETING.

McCourty didn't really get burned. He got cross-checked by Meriweather after Meriweather took one of the worst angles I have ever seen taken by a professional safety.

On a related note, there have been a number of games where Hernandez has barely seen the field, and I don't think anyone would say that Hernandez is teh suck.

I do think it's a bit different with AH. There is no question that he has had an outstanding rookie season. Brady has commented on how hard he works.

My point is that it's more of a package thing with him.

Looked like he was burned to me. He might have caught up to the receiver and tackled him though, but the ball cleared McCourty to the receiver BEFORE Meriweather ran into him.

McCourty got smoked. That play was going for 6 unless Meriweather made the play. Unfortunately, he didn't.

NFL Game Center: Green Bay Packers at New England Patriots - 2010 Week 15

I guess we have different definitions of "smoked". Looks to me like McCourty couldn't properly jam him and Jones executed a double move to perfection. Even then, McCourty was still about a yard and a half behind him. While the completion still would have been made, McCourty would have made the tackle (albeit past the first down marker). I don't think that's debatable being that Sanders closed quickly on Jones and McCourty has more speed than Sanders does. As it turns out, Meriweather (who I've defended many times on here) still took the bad angle and nobody had the chance to make the tackle.

Meriweather definitely made up for it, though, on what SHOULD have been a game-ending INT.

It wasn't a case where McCourty was closing a gap. Jones was pulling away from McCourty.

I'm not sure how you can say that when McCourty was still within a yard to a yard and a half from Jones even as Meriweather slammed into him. I've seen McCourty run down receivers who have had more cushion than Jones did on that particular play this season. I don't doubt that he could have pulled Jones down from behind without the bad angle from Meriweather.

I do. I see a DB getting smoked and probably beaten for 6. You seem to see a DB making a good play, despite being beaten cleanly. We'll have to just note disagreement and move on.

Thought Collinsworth said that Deaderick was hurt?

it was funny. Collinworth finally got around to saying this and then realized Deaderick had been inserted back into the game as the defense broke their loose huddle. Corrected himself mid-sentence.

Actually he said it early in the game after the first series. Then when he said it in the second half he noticed Deadrick was back in there, but since he only logged 7 plays total, one can assume that was a cameo appearance.

I think it is possible that McCourty made the tackle before Jones got in, but in any case it was definitely going to be a reception + some good yardage. Lets just be honest and admit McCourty got beat on that play. Still absolutely terrible by Merriweather, and Devin is still an outstanding rookie CB.

Butler lost his opportunity at the year's outset. He started, but did not perform. He lost his role to Arrington who has done enough to hold on. Now Butler has to maximize his role in sub packages. Definitely, not living up to his promise as an early second round pick. Hopefully, he will grow in his third year, much as Chung grew in his second.

I remember that. Quite odd. Where was Andrea Kramer? Still ga-ga'ing over Brady?

Wondering...Meri's INT that was negated by Tully's hands to the face penalty....was that INT due to the underthrow and Meri being NOT where he should have been?

Always thought safety was over the top coverage...not underneath..

I don't think he was in that bad of position, he was watching the QB and made a nice break on an underthrown ball.

Especially considering how out of position he can be, it was a good play by him

I didn't say he wasn't beaten. Actually, I said the opposite...

I just said that I didn't believe that he got smoked or burned. To me, a "smoking" or a "burning" is when the receiver has five or more yards on the corner. That wasn't the case. He had a yard to maybe a yard and a half at the very most on McCourty. That's why I believe, had Meriweather not slammed into him, McCourty still could have pulled him down from behind. Hell, as it is, if Meriweather had taken the proper angle, he could have de-cleated Jones.

As it is, I don't think we disagree much on the fact that McCourty was beaten. What we disagree on is just how badly he was beaten, what would have happen had he had the chance to run with Jones, and, apparently, whether or not Meriweather took a bad angle.
