Mike Reiss wrote that he was watching the refs confer (about a minute after the play) on the McCourty hit of Quarless that lead to the first touchdown, and he saw the refs looking at the replay on the jumbotron. No flag was thrown on that play until after they took a look at the jumbotron.

Someone needs to clarify from the league office whether this is proper procedure or not.

Proper procedure in Foxboro should be NOT TO SHOW STUFF LIKE THAT ON THE DAMNED JUMBOTRON!

I was thinking that when it happened, and I'm pretty sure that isnt supposed to happen.

Sound about right. Collinsworth was saying he didn't see it until they played it on slow motion, guess the refs didn't either.

If you're not sure it was a personal foul or not, it wasn't. This ain't hard.

To Roger Goodell it's a foul because there was contact between both helmets. This crap is getting out of hand and they need to change this rule so no penalties are called on such hits.

I don't think there was ever helmet-to-helmet contact. If I remember correctly, McCourty's shoulder pad hit the bottom of the face guard. I could be wrong.

If a single molecule of a defender's helmet interacts with a single molecule of an offensive player's helmet, it's helmet-to-helmet and it's 15 yards.

Welcome to the NFL in 2010.

The rules don't say anything about it, so I don't see a problem with them doing it.

What I don't like is them holding up play waiting for something to be shown, and the home team actually showing it.

You are. There was definite helmet to helmet contact. That being said, it was after the helmet hit the chest.

We're talking about Ed Hochuli who should not be a referee. He has had a number of big gaffes over the years. The man is an idiot.

fine - so I guess they should watch every replay to see if there was holding, interferance, facemasks - etc

absurd refs

To be clear -- it's completely, totally and in all ways AGAINST THE RULES for the refs to consult the freakin' JUMBOTRON for a ruling. There's a procedure for replay. It doesn't apply to this hit and it's certainly WAY out of bounds, if that's indeed what happened.

No, it absolutely is not. The jumbotron is not referenced anywhere in the rules.

I blame the Pats org for being stupid enough to show the replay in their continuing futile and counterproductive efforts to suck up to Goodell.

Are you joking or being a pain in the ass?

It's like the old definition of pornography. Hard to describe in writing the letter of the law. But, I'll know when I see it. Let em sort out the fines after the game. If it doesn't appear to be a foul Don't call it one.

Dale Arnold was just making the same observation in his WEEI open. He said BB was also steamed that we were showing that replay at that time. Hoculi had already signaled incomplete which was apparently what they were initially huddling over. Late flags altogether are a joke and often the product of lobbying or pressure. Last night someone looking at a replay on the jumbotron (Dale thinks it was the side judge) knowing the commissioner was in the building apparently decided he missed a call and needed to rectify that. Only problem is they are not allowed to do that based on replay unless it's the ref and he's under the hood and even then he can't call a penalty based on what he sees...

If replay were allowed to be viewed in penalty situations we would have come out ahead of the curve last night since they called at lot of BS penalties on Patriot players who were actually being held or having hands to their face or being interferred with in the process of committing the called penalty or having a pass called incomplete.

BS call. McCourty did everything right: led with his shoulder pads and hit him low.

Defenders can't control offensive players and what they might do.

The way the refs are officiation the NFL now is similar to what's going on in the NBA. It really is starting to ruin the game.
