#1 Seed + AFC East

Patriots clinch with either...

1. One win (@ Bills, vs Dolphins)
OR
1. One Jets loss (vs Dolphins, vs Bills)

How are the Jets still alive for the AFC East?

If the Patriots were to lose out and the Jets were to win out, both teams would be 12-4.

The Jets would have a 4-2 divison record and the Patriots would have a 3-3 divison record.

The Jets would win this tiebreaker and in turn the division.

Steelers/Ravens

Neither team can take the #1 seed from the Patriots.

The best both teams can finish is 12-4 and the worst the Patriots can finish is 12-4.

Patriots own the head-to-head tiebreaker against both teams if that were to happen.

AFC North/West Winners

AFC South winner can finish at 10-6 at best, AFC West winner can finish at 11-5 at best.

Patriots already have 12 wins.

Pats Playoff Possibilities

Well, it's easy now, I think. Patriots get the 1 seed with either a win or a Jets loss.

The only possibilities left are a 1 seed or a 5 seed. No team in the AFC can catch the Pats other than the Jets, and if the Jets catch them, they would have to be the wild card. Weird.

Patriots clinch the AFC East and the #1 seed with either....

1 win OR 1 Jets loss

The best the Steelers and Ravens can finish is 12-4 and we own the tiebreaker over both of them.

They've already cinched it.

They've already cinched it.

Why does everyone seem to think this?

If the Jets win out and the Patriots lose out, the Jets win the division and the Patriots are a 5 seed.

I think if the Pats lose their last two and the Jets beat Buffalo and lose to Chicago, the Jets win the division.

Edit: Sorry, I am wrong. I was thinking the Jets had 11 wins for a second.

We would be 12-4 and the Jets would be 11-5, so we would win the division. But if the Jets win both and the Patriots lose both, the Jets would have the tie breaker by virtue of a better division record (4-2 v 3-3).

Re: Pats Playoff Possibilities

its pretty basic... win vs buffalo and focus on the playoffs.. but the d was a big let down today...

Re: Patriots magic number down to 1

Pretty simple no matter who won the jets stillers game , next week against buffalo is important... we should beat buffalo.. but we have won 14 in a row and buffalo has been playing great, so anything could happen.. nothing is a given... so we will have to bring our best next week nuff said...

Yep, and then the Jets would be the 1 seed... BARF

Yes you are right. Jets could win out. I don't want it to come down to the
last game so I hope PATs close the deal with a WIN over Bills. You bet
Bills are looking to play spoiler next week and will bring their best.

The good news is that the Jets have the tougher road the rest of the way. The Bears are the only team either team must face who are still in the playoff hunt. The Bills always play them tough too. The Pats haven't lost to the Bills since 2003. The Pats usually play the Dolphins well up here at the end of the season.

If the Jets lost though, the Pats would be division winners and have a bye week no matter if they tanked the last two games. Now they gotta hope the Jets lose one or the Pats win one just to get a home playoff game (although if the Pats win at least one they would get HFA).

Re: Patriots magic number down to 1

They've already cinched it.

Technically they Havent, the jets have 2 losses in the division and the patriots have 1, if the jets beat the bills and the bears, they will finished with 2 losses, but if the patriots lose to the bills and the phins, they will have 3 losses in the division and lose the division tiebreaker.

OP is correct, any of 1 jets loss or pats win = #1 seed

Jets as a number one seed?

How are they still in the running?

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

If they win the last two and we lose the last two they would have the tiebreaker.

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

Patriots lose out, Jets win out.

Jets would own the division tiebreaker.

Jets would have a 4-2 divison record and the Patriots would be 3-3.

Why is this so difficult for the board? I think there was a mistaken belief that if the Jets and Pats won, the Patriots would clinch. Here's the deal.

THE FIRST TIE BREAKER AFTER HEAD TO HEAD FOR DIVISION WINNER IS BETTER DIVISION RECORD

The Jets currently are 3-2 against the division. If they win out, they will be 12-4 and 4-2 in the division.

The Patriots currently are 3-1 against the division. If they lose out, they will be 12-4 and 3-3 in the division.

Still good that the Jets won as the Chargers are now really in tough shape. IMO, the Ravens and Chargers are the only two teams that have a good chance of coming in to Foxboro and winning. I would be happy to only have to worry about one of them.
