When we got Belichick from the Jets, they got the Patriots first round draft pick. Does anyone remember who the Jets got with that pick? Ten years later it seems like one of the best uses of a first round draft pick for the Patriots. Doubt it worked out for the Jets.

i think it was shaun ellis

Believe it or not they had four #1s that year :

Shaun Ellis
John Abraham
Chad Pennington
Anthony Becht

Ellis and Becht were from the Keyshawn Johnson trade.

How Exactly Will History Judge Parcells? (Pt 3)

Jets traded up from that spot and ended up drafting DE Shaun Ellis.

A lot of familiar names, in both good and bad ways from that draft.

Quarterback Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from WingNut Univ.

The Jets traded our pick to the Niners to move up to select Shaun Ellis @ 12
With our original pick (#16) the Niners selected Julian Peterson.

Jets had 4 first rounders that year, they got Ellis @ 12, John Abraham @ 13, Chad Pennington @ 18 and Anthony Becht @ 27.

With the 199th pick in that draft we got a guy named Brady.

We sent our 1st pick in '00, 4th and 7th picks in '01 to the Jets.
We got BB, the Jets 5th in '01 & 7th in 02.

I think BB was worth it. :rocker:

BB and the guy picked at 199 make that draft an A++.

Ellis, Abraham and Pennington, thats pretty damn good (though you should do good with 4 1st round picks)

Yet oddly it didn't do a damn thing for the JETS... Hasn't in 42 years. They alienated Abraham to the point he refused to play for them after they went through yet another HC/FO change and lied to him (after tagging him in 2005), and they basically ground old Noodle Arm into dust (while screwing him financially in the process). SOJ - it doesn't matter who they draft, sign in FA or hail as their new HC. Bob Kraft clearly made the best trade of the pre BB era... Possibly the best trade (from a value standpoint) in the Salary Cap era...if not ever.

The best use of a 1st round draft pick in franchise history?

1) Bill Belichick
2) John Hannah
3) Vince Wilfork
4) Ty Law
5) Richard Seymour
6) Jarod Mayo -- likely to go up
7) Bruce Armstrong
8) Logan Mankins
9) Stanley Morgan
10) Devin McCourty-- likely to go up

others of note: Willie McGinest, Raymond Clayborn, Sam Cunningham, Irving Fryar

While we are on the subject. I know we got a pick from the Jets for the Tuna. What did we do with it?

I think Seymour, Law and McGinest come after Hannah given that these players won you superbowls. Vince, Mayo and Mankins still have to earn their legacy.

Jerod Mayo a better first round pick than Stanley Morgan, Willie McGinest, Sam Cunningham and Irving Fryar???????

Wilfork was on the '04 team and started in SB 38.

Just my opinion, obviously, but if his career ended in the next few years, no. If it continues on its current vector, I'd say probably yes. The guy is putting up tackle numbers this year than even greats like Ray Lewis never touched in their careers.

BTW, I am old enough to remember the Stanley Steamer, Hannah, and Bam. Great players, and maybe it is wrong to not have Bam in the top 10, probably in Mankins' place. Fryar would be higher if not for his off-the-field issues that for a while held him back.

Drew Bledsoe doesn't even get an honorable mention? As much as he drove me mad at times, he was an integral part of re-building this franchise.

You cant have Wilfork above Seymour. At least not yet.

Sebastian Janikowski at 17!!! I forgot about that, all I have to say is OMG. Imagine how dissapointing it must feel to see your team draft a kicker in the 1st round.

after thinking about the comments, my revision of the top 10 most effective uses of a Patriots first round draft pick:

1) Bill Belichick
2) John Hannah
3) Richard Seymour
4) Ty Law
5) Stanley Morgan
6) Vince Wilfork
7) Bruce Armstrong
8) Sam Cunningham
9) Jarod Mayo -- likely to go up
10) Willie McGinest

most likely to crack the top 10: Devin McCourty

honorable mention: Logan Mankins, Drew Bledsoe, Raymond Clayborn, Mike Haynes, the trade-down out of round 1 to net Gronkowski, Butler, Tate, and Edelman rather than making a pick (Clay Matthews)
