Is Bill O'Brien the next coach to go?

I gotta feeling that some bad teams will be looking to steal away O'Brien for a HC position since he has a lot to do with the play calling on this years team and since the offense is playing lights out it makes his value rise like so many coaches from the past who went on.

Would you like to see a new play caller for the offense in 2011? or is O'Brien good enough to promote to OC?

I think BB will name a OC next year,whoever it may be.

I don't think anyone will hire him away as a HC, but I can definitely see them hiring him away as an official OC. But I think we've seen enough this year that he's going to get the title next year, so it should be moot.

Not sure about that.. if anything we will elevate him internally. O'Brien has done a commendable job, listen to Brady's glowing praise of him..

Teams have not had a good history with "stealing our coaches", consider Mangini, Crennel, Weiss and McDaniels..

No matter how good things are in Patriotsland, you gotta come up with a gloom and doom point of view don't ya.

I doubt there will be a Patriots assistant who will be stolen by another team to be a head coach anytime soon. After the McDaniels' failure in Denver followed by failures by Crennel, Weis, and Mangini; I doubt there will be a Patriots assistant or coordinator given a head coaching job any time soon.

In fact, I would be more concerned about losing Nick Casserio. While the coaches from the Belichick tree have not been successful in new places, the front office personnel have had a lot of success (Pioli, Dimitroff).

I wouldn't go that far. Pioli and Dimitroff have been doing pretty well, and Weis/Crennel look a little better... even Mangini may have gotten a little of his luster back, at least as far as coaching goes. McDaniels obviously looks terrible, but I think owners will be just as willing to raid Bill's staff as they have been in the past.

The main difference is that they will most likely be wary of giving full control of an organization to one guy.

The upcoming possibility of a lockout will probably keep people from going outside the building more than any of the perceived 'failures' of former NE coaches.

To answer the question, although he's not exactly a coach, I would suggest Caserio as a candidate before BOB.

As Kontra stated, with all the issues with recent accessions from Belichick's staff I would be surprised if the Pats' staff gets pillaged anytime soon. If anything, Belichick appears to be single-handedly doing more now and thereby proving he may be the only reason for the Pats success in terms of coaching.
Until one of his coaches departs and makes a name for himself as a head coach, there is no reason to think otherwise.

I should elaborate. Of course, I don't McDaniels, and Mangini have failed. I don't like McDaniels anymore because of his big mouth, and I laughed at him getting fired, but Denver ultimately still should have given him more time to put the system in place. I do think, however, that Remeo had more than enough time in Cleveland. Furthermore, Weis is coming off of a fresh canning at Notre Dame. With the two of them, I think people hold the view that they're coordinators moreso than coaches. I also think that Mangini getting fired would be premature as well. They need to have more patience with him. However, with all of these coaches, there is a common perception that they won't be able to recreate any of what Belichick did, for some reason. Even though most of them weren't given the proper opportunity to do so.

I wouldn't necessarily count Pioli, Dimitroff, and Caserio in with all of these guys. They're front office people and not coaches.

I would rather see a guy with some nice credentials like Marvin Lewis be looked at as DC because he is all but gone in Cincy by January,but we all know its usually a guy in the Patriots tree that gets it.

to answer your first question, its one of two reasons. 1) he hasn't proved he is capable. 2) they don't want to pay him a coordinator salary

Both seem to come up short. There has been 2 yrs here without a OC and I feel like Obrien would be out instead of having a second year of QB coach. The latter explanation is unlikely based on the magnitude of the cash we are talking about.

the fact is, he calls the plays and we all know he is the de facto OC. BB basically spends the first several minutes after the defense comes off the field with his lineman and linebackers with his back to Brady and the offense. Obrien has been a soldier but deserves a bit of recognition, and the paycheck.

If not, he might go to another team to become OC, but definitely not HC.

Pats coaches are always going to be poached (hey, that rhymes) as long as the Pats are successful (ie, as long as Belichick & Brady are around.) It's an easy hire for scared GMs.

Thing is, it's usually not a good idea--the guys aren't HC material, or just aren't ready yet. The problem with the coaches who get approached is that it's a difficult thing to turn down. Guys get an offer, they usually take it.

What I'd like to see within the next five years is a young coach who's smart/saavy enough to learn under Belichick and be groomed to be Belichick's successor (yes, that day will eventually have to come.)
