I'm OK if that myth is perpetuated.

Bingo! Execute well and you'll beat the Pats. Pass well against them and the run will follow. Teams that try to set up the pass by running early on are usually sorely disappointed.

The way to stop the Pats is to stop that offense by either getting to Brady (most teams best chance) or having a very versatile personnel to stop their variety of weapons (a few teams best chance.)

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

Mind blown. (Actually, not really since Peyton was a hair away from beating us through the air.)

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

ESPN: Outscoring the Patriots is the key to beating them.

ESPN analyst John Clayton crunched the numbers this weekend and found something no one else has, when the opposing team outscores the Patriots, the Pats are 0-2.

maybe teams shouldnt let the game get out of hand in the first half so they have to pass their way in the 2nd half to get back into it.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

Seems to me the only way to beat the pats is to make Brady uncomfortable and push him around. running means trying to get by the six ton Wilfork and our LB's who love pancaking RB's...

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

more proof that stats lie

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

Here's the problem with that strategy, at least for this game. The quality of the OL. Both Cleveland and the Jets have EXCELLENT OL and accounted greatly for their rushing success. Secondly no one SINCE the Cleveland game has come close to that number.....for a reason. The defensive forcing unit is simply better than it was earlier in the season.

That's the fallacy. Taking your stats from earlier in the season, over a month ago. All teams change as the season progresses. Stats from game 2 aren't going to have a great deal of validity. Don't forget in the Jet game Devin McCourty gave up 2 TDs, Think that would happen now?

The only thing that is going to stop the Pats offense is going to be a wind chill below zero and a gale force wind.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

So the Jets running game is the reason the Patriots lost in week 2?

Matt Willis should be ashamed of himself for posting that article.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

I'm not sure why this is so crazy. Seems to me that when a team struggles in pass coverage like the Pats, getting a running game going prevents the Pats from cheating in any way--get them coming & going. In other words, everybody's running up the passing yards on the Pats, but if you run too, there you go. Seems logical to me.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

In the first Jets game, Whiney and Shonn got 128 yards on 26 carries. Pretty solid but not earth-shattering. Take away one run and the total is 97 yards on 25 carries...or a 3.9 ypc.

In the Browns game, the running game was very effective...but only in the context of the game. After the Browns went up 10-0 needing only 61 yards to do it (38 through the air), the Pats were unable to do anything on offense. The Browns went fumble/punt/punt on their next 3 drives. On their last drive before the half, they got a TD to regain control of the game. The drive was 60 yards, 37 through the air and another 11 on an end-around. The Pats went punt/punt to open the 2nd half so the Browns played without any pressure, enabling them to stick with the running game.

So the only time all year that the Pats were really victimized by the run was a game in which they were down by multiple scores and the offense couldn't get out of its own way. So if you can get up quickly on the Pats, have them treat a kickoff like a hand grenade and fumble on the 1 yard line...then I think that the running game will be super effective.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

In my opinion, the Jets went in the wrong direction when they continued to put the ball in Sanchez's hand and force him to pass, when he clearly didn't look to be in the "zone". On the contrary, Greene looked good rushing the ball but was taken out of the game early with the Jets down by more than two touchdowns headed into the second quarter.

Frankly, if I were coaching the Jets, I would had lost that game on my terms and those terms would be running the ball with both Tomlinson and Greene.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

Couple of posters on the ESPN comment section had insightful rebuttal to this story:

"I don't see this as being a telling stat. The Browns jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead because of a fumbled kickoff, and their ability to run kept New England out of the game. No doubt about that. The Jets ran a lot both games, and in the first they managed to come from behind and win when Sanchez hit 70% of his passes for 3 TDs, and in the second they lost by 42. In most wins for the Pats, teams ran less because they were getting blown out and the clock was an issue (Bengals, Dolphins, Chargers, Vikings, Colts, Steelers, Lions)."

and

"The only statistic that matters is WINS and LOSSES.
If stats mattered, then the Patriots Defense would get NO CREDIT for winning the game vs. Baltimore by stuffing them on their last 6 possessions in a row!
How about the interception vs. Manning when the game was on the line? A bad defense doesn't make that play.

I prefer to see this DEFENSE as a WORK in PROGRESS. The young guys like Cunningham, Spikes, Ninkovich(young in years in the league), McCourty, Arrington, even Butler, Chung, Brace, etc. are all getting BETTER each week.

By adding a PHYSICAL safety and good special teamer like PAGE, the Pats have that physical edge in the secondary that SCARES the hell out of WR's in February in Foxboro."

I think that was Gruden. I think he actually said that it was all about "completions and positive yards per rush". Thanks for the insight, champ!

When Gruden said this, I didn't find the statement to match what I'd seen from the Jets since Brian became offensive coordinator. If anything, it was more representative of the Patriots offense insomuch as getting the passing offense in a rhythm early with short quick passes to a various wide receivers.

Bingo. It doesn't really matter if you come out and pass or run all over the Pat's D if Brady is just going to come right out and hang another 7 on you as soon as the D sits down. That is why we can be last or next to last in yards allowed, but 10-2 in the only stat that matters.

Re: ESPN:Rushing, not passing, key to beating Pats

OK, so it "looks" like the Pats are emerging or have emerged as the top team in the NFL. Last year, when it was pretty clear that New Orleans and Indianapolis were cream of the crop, did ESPN and the national media publish articles on HOW to beat each of those teams? I don't seem to recall many, if any of those. In 2007 every media person had an opinion, a "blueprint", as to how to beat the Patriots. Man, I f#cking hate the media.,.,,what is their OBSESSION with seeing the Pats fail or figuring out how to beat them when they are a top team?
