I know they work out lots of players, and maybe it's just routine, but seems odd to be working out an OL.

Anyway, Caplan reported this and SMY retweeted it.

that's a former first round draft pick, isn't it? Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Why's that? If he regains his promise and is healthy, why not take a look? Koppen is overmatched by big tackles often.

Likely looking for invitees to training camp.

I remember being a Grove fan during that draft. Not a bad backup pickup if healthy.

Koppen didn't practice today.......

koppen was injured during jet game via reiss

When did Koppen come out of the game?

I thought the Raiders picked themselves a great player.. He was below avg in Oakland but I thought that had more to do with system and coaching.. Parcells lured him away with a nice contract but only stayed 1 year..

Looks like Koppen has a vet's day off:

Per Rap: BostonHerald.com - Blogs: Rap Sheet

The team also did not have center Dan Koppen, who I’m told is taking a veteran day off. He talked after the game, and did not appear injured. Just a little sore.

When healthy, this guys has been able to show that he can hold up against the bigger DT's in the league. The problem is that the guy is rarely healthy. I'm not the biggest Koppen fan and feel that we can upgrade in the draft, but I hope he regains his health if we're left with Jake Grove playing next to Dan Connolly.

I agree Koppen gets over matched by certain DT's....But, I think you guys are underestimating how important of a rapport Brady has with his center.

Sounds like Koppen is ok though....whew

Agree about the timing thing with Brady. Rhythm disruptions can be as bad as getting owned by a DL once in a while. Koppen also sets up the blocking schemes IIRC.

Funny you mention that after the first series he had verses the Jets with one bad snap and another early one that thankfully the refs blew dead

Koppen is probably the least replaceable player on the Patriots' offense after Brady. Every team in the NFL would be willing to sacrifice a little blocking power in a center in return for the kind of awareness, intelligence and technique that Koppen brings to the table.

A lineman's physical power is totally useless if he and the rest of the line aren't on the same page and are out of position or misdiagnose the rush scheme. A center like Koppen is even more essential with an offense as polymorphous as the Pats' -- without Koppen calling the line's signals, Brady can't begin to do what he does with the rest of the offense.

Agreed... centre is by far the most underrated position in football.

How can it be wrong to look at Grove as a street free agent? Do we think that Wendell and Ohrnberger are so great. They are our backups inside. Ojinnaka can back up at both guard and at OT.

If Grove is healthy, he is worth having on the squad. Look at who we signed in the last week. He could replace either of them or replace Ohrnberger or Wendell.
