Amid the roar of tonight's wave I want to play pragmatist. Our next 2 games are going to be difficult, @ Chi and home for GB. If we lose 1 of those 2 and win the other 3 and the JEST win out....same record, same division record, same conference record.....is it common opponent record?? That could be the same as well right? Could it come down the the 5th tie breaker of point differential??? Not sure, a little help here....Looked it up, what is STRENGTH OF VICTORY??

And what exactly does "strength of victory" mean?? I would hate to back into the 5th seed due to "strength of victory" right??

We're sitting pretty in the drivers seat right now. Real pretty, we have some wiggle room.

Total number of wins the teams you beat have. Pretty much like Strength of Schedule but rewarding you for beating the good teams on your schedule.

So we get "rewarded" for losing to Mangina instead of the Ravens? If I were a JEST fan this would royally p*ss me off! ;)

Uh, why? Strength of Victory is the more telling stat than Strength of Schedule......

1. Head-to-Head
2. Division
3. Common games
4. Conference
5. Strength of Victory
6. Strength of Schedule

1. Tied
2. Currently tied at 3-1, with 2 more wins likely for both
3. Tied, both teams won their uncommon games (IND/SD, HOU/DEN)
4. If division record is tied, the conference record is either tied or Pats advantage
5. Pats in a walk

So if the Pats and Jets end up tied, the Jets only hope is to take the division tiebreaker...meaning a Pats loss at home to the Fins or to the Bills on the road. The Fins will be frozen fish sticks in January and the scrappy Bills are getting mauled by injuries.

The Pats can lose one of the next 2 games and still retain the #1 AFC seed. So barring an extremely disappointing end to the regular season, the road to the Super Bowl goes through Foxboro.

As long as we don't lose to Buffalo or Miami we should be alright. If we lose one of those games, the Jets could beat us out with a better division record (assuming they win out, of course). If we only drop one to the Packers or Bears we're likely to win the tie-breaker on strength of victory. The primary difference here is that we beat Baltimore (8-4), Indy (6-6), and SD (6-6) while the Jets beat Cleveland (5-7), Houston (5-7), and Denver (3-9). That equates to a 7 game cushion in our favor. The difference in losing to either Chicago or Green Bay is negligible since their records are comparable (9-3 to 8-4).

We're in good shape but we've got to continue playing well. Chicago will be a tough game for us. There was so much effort put into tonights game that its easy to imagine us coming out a bit flat next week, especially since its on the road on a short week.

Wins by teams defeated

Patriots: 55 wins
Jets: 33 wins

Yeah, it's "unfair" they go by this instead of Strength of Schedule.

This is a good example of why it's too early to look at anything other than the first two tiebreakers. Pats beat the Ravens, who the Jets lost to, but the Pats lost to the Browns, who the Jets beat, making them even. However, the Jets also lost to GB, who the Pats have at home in two weeks. If the Pats win that game, then they own that tiebreaker...until the games against the Bears are decided. If we lose to the Bears and beat the Packers, and the Jets beat the Bears, then that tiebreaker is tied again. But the Jets could always lose to the Steelers too, who we beat.
See? It's just a little too early to talk about, lol.

Never said it was unfair. In this case I think point differential would be a better tie breaker simply because you can only beat the teams you play and it could be concieved "unfair" (if I were a jet fan). You have control over point differential you dont have any control over strength of victory or strength of schedule right?

When NYJ loses to PIT, an AFC opponent, that would be catastrophic for the Jets because it would hurt their common games record and their conference record. Pats have already beaten PIT and have only crummy AFC opponents left. Even if the Pats lose to CHI and GB, our conference record is unaffected. Gosh it sux to be a Jets fan:D

-> First tie breaker is head-to-head record
Pats and Jets are even at 1-1

-> Second tie breaker is record within the division
Pats and Jets are both 3-1
Obviously the one loss was to each other
Both have two division games remaining
Both those games are against the Bills and the Dolphins
Pats are at Buffalo week 16 on December 26th
Pats are home versus Miami week 17 on January 2nd
Jets are home next week versus Miami on December 12th
Jets are home versus Buffalo week 17 on January 2nd

-> Third tie breaker is common games
Pats and Jets are 7-2, but Pats sort of hold the lead in this category.
There are only two games that are not 'common games' over the course of a full season, so perhaps it is simpler to eliminate those two games from both team's records.
Those two games are the ones that were determined by the previous year's division standings. A 1st place team plays two other 1st place teams; a 2nd place team plays two other 2nd place teams; etc.
Pats schedule was versus Indy and at San Diego
Jets schedule was at Denver and versus Houston
Pats and Jets were both 2-0 in those games
Right now Pats are even, 7-2 in common games
Pats have also beaten the Steelers in what will be a common game
Jets have also lost to the Packers in what will be a common game
Against Baltimore the Pats won, the Jets lost
Against Cleveland the Pats lost, the Jets won
Jets lost to the Packers; Pats have not played them yet
Pats beat the Steelers; Jets have not played them yet

-> Conference record
Pats are 6-2 (losses to Browns and Jets)
Jets are 5-2 (losses to Ravens and Pats)
Pats still have to play Miami and at Buffalo
Jets still have to play Miami, Buffalo and at Pittsburgh

Strength of victory and strength of schedule could change a lot between now and the end of the season, but I would presume they are pretty close right now.

As I posted above, Strength of Victory is not even close. Patriots have a 22 game advantage over.

Patriots defeated teams: 55 wins
Jets defeated teams: 33 wins

I accept what you are saying til you get to them being close. Its impossible to 100% completely fair and to play the exact same schedule I understand. We play the better teams which "should/could" have better records being better teams last year. Now I know it doesnt always hold true(look at the NFC south!)but playing the Colts vs playing the Titans is in this case an "unfair" advantage for the pats dont you think? And to lose out on the top seed overall in the playoffs due to scheduling.....ouch!

but playing the Colts vs playing the Titans is in this case an "unfair" advantage for the pats dont you think?

What the hell? Having to play the HARDER team is an "unfair advantage" to the Patriots?

Please stop.

The 3rd tie breaker is COMMON opponents.. Not "uncommon". Which means the NFC North and AFC North. Right now, the Pats are (5-1) against common opponents, but still have to play Chi and GB. The Jets are 4-2 and have to play Pittsburgh and Chicago. Losing one game eliminates that tie breaker and forces them to the next one. Personally, I'd rather not see it go that far.. I want it won outright. Not like in 2002 or in 2008 where the Pats missed out because of tie-breakers..

Why are you still posting??

Its not really important if you dont want it to "go that far". With a loss next week it means nothing to us at all, we still win tie breakers. Your post is moot....again.:bricks:
