It was a rumor last night and this morning it's a done deal.

Gonzalez for Kelley, Rizzo, and one or two others (Kalish?)

Hoyer and his assistant are very familiar with our farm system. Our system has less duds compared to others, yielding recent studs like Hanley Ramirez, Lester, Buchholz, Papelbon, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Bard, etc.

So, there's a good chance the Sox traded away some really legit talent to get Gonzalez.

Youk moves to third. Still holes at catcher and LF. I just don't understand why the team didn't spend that little bit extra for Mark Teixera before, and we would still have these prospects.

You must spend too much time listening to Massarotti, Texeira wasnt coming here, no matter what we offered the Yanks would have trumped our offer and he always wanted to go the NY.
I think we're fine at catcher, Salty's better than people give him credit and Teks fine if he catches 35-40 games over the season. Maybe they sign Werth now since we're left handed heavy in the lineup, if not we have Cameron, Ellsbury, Drew and Kalish unless Kalish is included in the Agon deal.
Not sure if we have enough chips left to get Justin Upton but that would make for an awesome lineup.

Wow, as much as I wanted this to happen did not see this coming so soon.

Good/great move.. did not have to give up Bucholz/Bard/Lester or any of our young players on the roster.

Source: Kelly, Rizzo, Fuentes to San Diego.

We keep Iglesias and Kalish, this is a no brainer. Now we need a bullpen.

This is fantastic news. Really made my morning. Now, if we can make some moves for Carl Crawford and add to our bullpen, our offseason will be complete and we'll be ready to leapfrog the Junkees.

Good trade IMO, I still would like to see them go after Crawford.

Too many lefties Werth of trade for Justin Upton. Need another R bat.

Was just about to repeat that, especially facing the Yankee lefties and Cliff Lee whether hes with Texas or NY. Werth muders lefties so that would be my bet although they may still make a play for Upton. Upton would cost more in terms of players since hes signed to a long term deal already and Arizona wants cost controlled major leaguers back in return.

Why the hell would anyone want Crawford? $100 mil for someone who's legs wont outlast the ridiculous contract? We already have Ellsbury and a step up from him isnt worth the money.

Go get Werth. Crawford would be a horrible idea, Theo is too smart for that.

We will lose a number of farm hands next year in a roster crunch, Upton would provide great value given his contract. Upton, Werth and Ellsbury sounds pretty sweet..

Thrilled we didn't have to give up Ingleases in this trade.

Craawford is an exciting player, but I dont see us breaking the bank for him now that we've signed Gonzo. There would also be the problem of too many lefties in the top half lineup. I think we all know the Yankees will inevitably hand Crawford a blank check. Werth is a better option for us at this point.

We will go get Werth now for his RH power...as someone said, we need a right handed batter will all the lefties. So i see something like this:

CF - Ellbury
2B - Pedroia
1B - Gonzalez
3B - Youk
DH - Papi
RF - Werth
LF - Drew/Kalish
SS - Scutaro/Lowrie
C - Salty/Tek

That is pretty damn good lineup!

This is a ridiculously good move for the Red Sox. It seems like this trade is a little old Boston boys crew as the Padres could have gotten more for Gonzo.

So fricken pumped with this move.

no matter what the sox offered for teixera the yankees would have out bid them. whats not to understand .the redsox will never out bid for a player the yankees want  this trade is excellent. they get a 28 year old studd who hit 30 dingers in sandiego a huge ball park. you can add ten to that total hitting at fenway baltimore and ny all short left hand porches. the sox didnt even give up bard or anybody on the major league roster and they got plenty of draft picks coming up from vmart leaving and beltre on they way out. there farm system wont miss a beat. i myself would rather have vmart instead of the picks. i will feel much more excited about the team if they can land crawford werth or cliff lee. they need one of those three players.

Potential + Given Acquisitions
Adrian Gonzalez
Jayson Werth
Carl Crawford
Cliff Lee

Potential + Given Losses
Victor Martinez
Adrian Beltre
Hideki Okajima

- minor leaguers.

Given what we know so far what do we think it would take for the Red Sox to come out massive winners this off-season?

Sign Werth, if the Tigers sign him we lose the first round pick, build the bullpen, need at least 3 good arms, maybe Napoli as backup catcher/1B, hes not good behind the plate but can hit, depends what it would take to get him.
Dream pickup, Cliff Lee.

Not sure why everyone was up in arms about letting Victor go, he was not good as a catcher, great bat but not behind the plate, we need to find a good catcher for the next few years and I like having Varitek along with Salty, it wasnt long ago we started the season with an unproven catcher and he turned out ok (varitek).
Id rather have Agon and Werth than Beltre and Victor

Either Crawford or Jayson Werth would be so full of win for this team.

I didn't think I could be distracted from my studies more than I already was by the Jets game. I guess I was wrong...

A couple things about Crawford. I recall at one point him saying that he hated the Yankees, but don't recall him saying anything like that about the Sox. I know money talks and the Yankees have more, but Crawford has not come across as a guy focused strictly on money; the last contract he signed with Tampa Bay was definitely club friendly.

Second, he's a left fielder that does not have a particularly strong arm. With that in mind it makes a lot more sense for him to play in Fenway rather than in Yankee Stadium. Now whether or not he, the Sox or the Yankees take that into consideration is another story.

Lastly, he comes across as kind of a small town guy; both New York as well as Boston might turn him off. However, if it comes down to just the two Boston is far less big city-ish than New York. I think he would feel more comfortable in Boston than New York - and both are much closer to home than the west coast.
