Fans who follow the Pats have failed to recognize that what Belichick is doing is rebuilding the team in all three phases while still remaining in the hunt for the playoffs. Yes, the secondary has been porous and is extremely vulnerable against the pass, but the youngsters, who have considerable talent , continue to improve from week to week. up front on defense, once again, youngsters are now playing significant minutes and improving, as well. Even the offense has changed considerably. Hernandez/Gronkowski, Vollmer, Deadrick, Connolly and several others are finding extended playing time. The bottom line is, could any other coach make major changes and adjustments in personnel and still put a team on the field that is capable of beating anybody? And on top of this, remember, we have 2 picks in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds next year. Belichick is a genius, bar none.

The above is only possible because we still have Brady. Look at how much turnover there has constantly been on the Colts teams. As long as Manning has been healthy though, they have been a threat. Once Manning and Brady retire, then both Indy and New England will see what real rebuilding means.

I hate calling him a genius. He is an AMAZING coach, and he is a great personnel guy, and he is a ruthless capologist, and those three things make him the most valuable employee in the NFL, but the 'genius' label wears thin on me sometimes.

The above is only possible because we still have Brady. Look at how much turnover there has constantly been on the Colts teams. As long as Manning has been healthy though, they have been a threat. Once Manning and Brady retire, then both Indy and New England will see what real rebuilding means.

And what a sad day in both cities that will be. Although, if we still have BB, we will still have a shot at remaining competative. Not sure what they'll do in Indy.

True. Hopefully we can find another Matt Cassell at least to give us a serviceable QB until we find our franchise again. It is scary to contemplate a future without Brady, for those of us who started watching the Pats in the early 90s.

For myself, my entire experience with the Pats that I can seriously remember has had Bledsoe or Brady at the helm (minus injuries, which gives us some Scott Zolak and Matt Cassell). That has been a pretty damn good stretch.

I still remember early in the 2001 season, maybe the San Diego game.

Brady drops back into the pocket, the rush is coming from his blind side; I'm just waiting for the hit. But Brady steps up - -just a little step -- and gets the pass off. I was like ..."Whaa. That's it? That's all he had to do?"

I love what Bledsoe did for this franchise and he was one tough dude on the field; but he could never step out of the way of that hit. Seeing the presence, that awareness from Brady was so revealing, the first real sign of what we had. Naturally Brady has had some fumbles (we don't miss you, Aaron Schoebel), but his feel for the game is something.

Eason was good. Just injury prone and sucked in SB XX. But 99% of QBs would have sucked against that D. He had some really good years in 84 and 86 and did his part in 85. Some guys always exaggerate the awfulness of QBs that were actually quite good (Eason and Bledsoe being the prime examples).

As for the original topic; I prefer to think of the Patriots' approach as a "reloading" rather than a "rebuilding". There's a difference. We've kept core players and re-stocked in other areas of need, especially on the defense. Rebuilding teams usually cut bait with the core players and start fresh. Luckily, Belichick is a master of finding pieces that fit what he wants and has the coaching brilliance to overcome the disadvantages of the learning curve a young team has to go through.

That's what I was thinking. At least we won some games with Eason. We even got to the Superbowl in 1985 (although as I recall Steve Grogan had Qb'd the Pats (replacing the injured Eason) for a good part of that season). Eason was horrible in the Superbowl though, curling into his routine fetal position at the approach of an oncoming rush.
