That's great and everything, but the statistic is a little misleading. Only six teams played Thursday. His lead will shrink significantly after Sunday/Monday.

Probably shrink by 10? That's still a remarkable lead.

Yeah, you take away his, what, 12 tackles from yesterday? He still leads by more than 20. Quite a year.

Tackles are good, plays end w/a tackle. But might his total be a bit inflated due to:

1) The Pats inability to get off the field on 3rd down, giving the opponent more plays, generating more tackles?

2) A deficiency in pass coverage, meaning while Mayo's making tackles he ISN'T a) batting down passes and/or making interceptions, and b) that deficiency in coverage leads opposing QBs to target that soft middle of the field for completions, which then require tackles?

I was figuring by about 12ish, but in the same ballpark. I'm not bashing Mayo, I love the guy. I was just pointing out a problem with that particular stat. If he stays healthy, he should easily have the most tackles by the end of the season.

Well, over a nine game period his closest pursuers have averaged nine or ten tackles a game, so even if they play lights out and make 20 tackles, he still leads by 13. It's more likely that they will make their average, so his lead will still be over 20.

There's no problem with that stat.

So, you're definitely a "The glass is half empty." kind of guy, huh? :)

No, not at all. I like Mayo as a player. But the tackles stat is a bit misleading.

Misleading? It is what it is, he leads the NFL in tackles.

Patrick Willis was the leading tackler twice in the last 3 years and he was being touted as the best ILB in the game. What Mayo is doing this year is phenomenal.

Mayo is cleaning up for Arrington's missed tackles. :D

On a serious note, he is all over the field, which is awesome.

I'm not a big tackles guy but both arguements have strong supporting points.

In theory, if the ToP was lower and if the team could make stops on 3rd down was a tad better, his tackle count would be lower. With that said, Bru and Rodney had very high tackle counts in the salad days so who knows.

But, if his didn't make the stops, the team would be giving up 30 a game instead of 24:p.

My only gripe would be that he would be forcing more TOs. Other than that, he is one of the top ILBs in the game. He is everywhere....

You think you've seen everything then you see Patriots fans complaining about Jerod Mayo making tackles. Some of you are pathetic.

He's doing his fricken job.

Geez. Give the guy his due. The Patriots have some serious 3rd down issues, but I don't think Mayo's pass defense is to blame. You may be right that he has more opportunities as a result of poor 3rd down defense, but tackles are tackles.

When a defense is working as it should the ILB is supposed to lead the team in tackles. Its indicative of a decent run defense IMO. If a safety leads the team in tackles that usually means running backs are making it to the 2nd level of the defense.

They're not complaining about it. They're calling him overrated.
There's a difference. :D

Would that be the same as saying Tom Brady is overrated because he throws touchdowns and has a low TD/INT ratio? ;)

Probably. I keep hearing that Brady guy is overrated too. But somehow he just keeps winning! Don't forget that he's 'only a game manager' and 'the system' is what makes him look good. LOL.

We'll both agree that our players are overrated and it's just the system that puts them in positions to identify a play then execute it.

I see how this works now. :p

I'd like to see him make a few more big plays. Patrick Willis is widely considered the best ILB in the game today because he makes a ton of tackles, but also forces fumbles, picks off passes and sacks quarterbacks. Mayo is a very good player, but he has to make more impact plays before we can start talking about him as one of the best linebackers in the game.
