Saw him get some pressure. It's obvious to me that Brace has the size and can play DE, and probably wants no part of NT. Dirty little secret is, nobody wants to play NT if they can play someplace else. Ted Washington didn't, wanted more money to play the nose, it's dirty work. Vince just happens to be built more for tackle than end, even though we use him there.

Anyway, Love probably has fewer options, and an NFL pay check will make you take the dirty job, especially part time.

Can he earn more than a cup o coffee at nose if we needed him a few games?

Love looked pretty good when he was out there. He seemed to be out there a lot more in pass rush situations, maybe getting Wright and Pryor's snaps. Not sure if he could hold up at NT over the course of an entire game.

As long as Gerard Warren playing DE on running downs is something that has to happen, I'm fine with Love playing NT so we can bump Wilfork into Warren's place. Ideally, though, Wilfork is on the nose while Deaderick is playing DE.

No, Wilfork is the nose and Love isn't likely to start in the NFL. You need a backup and it seems Brace will not be it. Fortunately, we need ends too and it looks like Brace fits the bill, has the height.

I'm sure Vince likes being moved around, but he's built to play tackle, either nose, or 4-3.

Almost every time I noticed him he was getting moved out of his gap. Probably the most egregious one was on the goalline in the 2nd quarter when OG Rob Sims somehow pushed him behind Wilfork and Maurice Morris ran through a two yard hole. I believe the Lions were running right at his side when he and Wilfork were the DTs in the 4-2-5 sub package.

He wasn't atrocious but there are definitely things he could improve on. Like a lot of young players he seems to do better as a pass rusher than a run stopper.

You completely missed my point.

Which was?...

That Love is a back-up but, as long as Gerard Warren playing DE against the run is an option, Love should be the starting NT while Wilfork is moved out to DE in Warren's place. At least against the run. The Lions were running right at Warren all day today with a good amount of success. At least with Love, he may get pushed back but runs up the middle are funnelled into Spikes and Mayo.

Well, they'll need to develop or acquire one. If they wanted a pass rushing NT, they could use Vince. I'm sure he's faster, at least considering his weight.

Oh, OK. You're talking about our strategy this year to use Vince to close off one side. I understand.

I'm trying to think in terms of the future, having 2 DEs who can handle the run and a backup for Vince. Mangini exposed the weakness in our scheming to hide deficiencies, but I'm all for any combination that lets us better handle things. Wilfork is head and shoulders above our other linemen.

No disagreement there.

I was surprised they used Warren there earlier in the year. Can't say if I know anyone but Vince that can really do a decent job.

Thought it was funny how Brace goes nowhere near there since he's had some success at end. We're really lucky to have Vince and his attitude. It would be great to have anyone who could do a decent job since it appears moving Vince really covers our weaknesses in the absence of Ty and Seymour.

I was impressed by what he did in preseason and was not surprised when he got a roster spot. I think he is well up to it and hopefully he keeps on improving as he gets more experience.

If he can hold his ground at nose, he has a place. If he's another relatively short tackle that wants to penetrate, he'll have problems sticking IMO.

you'd rather see Deadrick at DE than Arrington?

Love looks very difficult to block on passing plays. He is just a huge unguided missile blasting though the backfield....at least in the first quarter. He slowed down a bit after that; maybe that huge gut is slowing him down. He and Vince need to get their stomachs stapled.
