Is it good that this young patriots team has a rival that they need to keep up with?

No matter what the division winner will be the winner of the monday night game. But I think this competition back and forth between the jets and patriots is helping this young team mature even more.

I don't think the Jets are helping the Patriots. I think the team is just learning to win games. If they were motivated by what the Jets were doing, they wouldn't have gotten their butts handed to them by Cleveland.

The winner of the Monday night game has a huge advantage towards winning the division, but I disagree that it'll be decided on that day. For one thing, there are 4 games left afterwards.

Both the Pats and Jets have to go on the road to play 7-3 Chicago, a surprise team that will be playing for their own division title chances. While both AFC East teams should be favoured, this is in no way a gimme game.

The Pats also play the other NFC North divisional hopeful (and pre-season Super Bowl candidate) Green Bay, also at 7-3. For the Jets, they go to 7-3 Pittsburgh to play the co-AFC North division leaders.

Both teams also have 2 divisional games remaining against Miami and Buffalo, and you know both of those teams would love to spoil somebody's season. So there's a lot more football to play even after the Monday night game. The Jets game is huge, but it's not the Super Bowl, unless you're Rex Ryan.

6 games left so nothing is determined next week, though I do think Cincy and NE humble them, Pittsburgh and CHI too.

If the Patriots do not lose any more divisional games, the Patriots versus the Packers and the Jets versus the Steelers games will most likely determine the AFC East Division Champion.

that statement is simply not true. there's 6 games left, 5 not including the game against eachother

No the standings will, too many ifs in a wide open NFL season.

If the Pats were to lose to the Jets, they would need to come out one game ahead of them (not tied) to win the division.

If the Pats lost to the Jets, that would make 3 losses on the season. They would need the Jets to have 4 or more. So, they would need the Jets to lose 2 of 5 for the rest of the season, and the Pats to lose none. Or Pats lose one and Jets lose 3, etc.

Based on how the season has gone so far, I don't really see the Jets losing that many more games than the Patriots for the rest of the season. I think that for the Pats to reasonably have a chance at the division, they need to win the Monday night game.

Again, it's just one game, and it's not the Super Bowl. It obviously helps to win the game, but no single game decides anything at this stage of the season.

In any event, I'd focus a lot more on Detroit than the Jets or the Packers anyways. Short week on the road after a big emotional game means we shouldn't be looking too far down the road.

It might be one game but if they lose next Monday they are going to be a Wild Card team. I'm not expecting either team to go 14-2 but it would be far from shocking if both teams ended up at 13-3 or 12-4. Should the Pats lose to the Jets they'll be on the losing end of the first tie-breaker to decide the division.

Any way you look at it, it's a must win. But then again so is Thursday's game when you consider the common opponent factor.

I think it falls into the must win category solely because it is a game with more on the line than a normal game. Of course they can overcome a loss and still win the division, but at the time they play it both teams are playing as if it will decide the division. Winning in that type of game bodes well for the playoffs. "Must win" IMO includes going into the playoffs strong, on a roll of winning games that have an impact on seeding.

I dont think it is a must to win in order to win the division necessarily.
I think it is a tremendous longshot to think the Jets who are 8-2 and realistically could be 5-5 if the Lions, Browns and Broncos did not give them games that they had won, will go 4-2 or better in their 6 remaining games, all of which may be cold weather games, which the Jets figure to not be as good in. They must go to NE, Chicago, an Pittsburgh. The Jets so far this season are 1-2 against teams with winning records, 1-0 vs .500 teams, 1-0 vs 4-6 teams and have 5 wins vs 2-8 or 3-7 teams including the above mentioned games where they were beaten by 2-8,3-7 and 3-7 teams who then handed them the game.

They beatus in their house. Aside from that they are 0-2 against winning teams and have built their record win close wins against 2 and 3 win teams. The Jets are the most overrated team in the NFL, and that will be proven in the next month and a half.

True...we are 0-2 vs winning teams besides that Patriots win. But if you think the Jets are overrated then you are mistaken. Just as easily we could have lost those games vs Detroit, Cleveland, Denver, & Houston...we could have easily won the games vs Green Bay & Baltimore.

One key play here or there is the difference in the game in all of those contests.

For instance: If Braylon Edwards doesn't run into the kicker during the Baltimore game then they don't get three free 1st & goals from the 3 yard line and run in for the only touchdown of the game.

Another instance: If Santonio Holmes doesn't drop that wide open screen pass during the Green Bay game, the outcome might just be different. Not to mention faking a punt to run for the first down on 4th & 19.

Now, I'm not making excuses for the Jets losses this season. I'm just explaining a point. That point being how close these teams are and that even vs the good teams we weren't over-matched by any of them.

yeah and if GB made a handful of plays they screwed up they would have beaten your precious rats by DOUBLE...I can go on all day long bustin' you up into little green pieces but let's cut this short...your precious all world green beaters were SHUT OUT....AT HOME..AFTER A BYE WEEK...spin THAT any way you want, it comes up S-U-C-K. Stop the minimizing and pro green rationalizations and OWN what actually happens.

Obviously a loss to the Jets does not eliminate the Pats from winning the division (insert Rex Ryan 2009 'eliminated' reference here), but it does make it highly unlikely. Because the Jets would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker were that to happen, the Pats would have to win not one, but two more games than the Jets do in the five other remaining games.

On the other hand the Jets could lose to the Pats and possibly - though not guaranteed - win one more game than the Pats in those five other games, and still win the division on a tiebreaker.

Jets schedule:
H vs Bengals, 11/25
A at Pats, 12/06
H vs Dolphins, 12/12
A at Steelers, 12/19
A at Bears, 12/26
H vs Bills, 01/02

Pats schedule:
A at Lions, 11/25
H vs Jets, 12/06
A at Bears, 12/12
H vs Packers, 12/19
A at Bills, 12/26
H vs Dolphins, 01/02

Realistically, if the Pats lose to the Jets they'll need a lot of help to win the division. For example, the Bears beat the Jets but lose to the Pats, plus the Steelers beat the Jets while the Pats beat the Packers. Plenty of other scenarios, but you're starting to either ask for a team to have a good game against the Jets but not against the Pats (Bears, Dolphins, Bills), and/or an unexpected upset (Bengals over Jets.)

Bottom line is that both teams actually 'control their own destiny', that cliche that gets thrown around so often. If either one of them runs the table and wins out, they win the division and the best the other can do is a 5th-seed wild card.

How many games has their QB and RB played/won in cold weather?

I know he played terrible in his first cold weather game vs Buffalo. 5 interceptions. But, was that a byproduct of the cold or him being a rookie?
What about the Playoff game vs Bengals last year? I'm not going to even count the reg Season game vs Bengals last year. Are we talking about every home game after late November? How was the temperature during the 4 turnover debacle in New England last year. But what constitutes a cold weather game in your opinion?

Whatever the answer is...there is too small a sample to evaluate Mark Sanchez in cold weather games. He's only started in 29 games total, including playoffs. 16 of those were on the road. I know one thing, he's playing better than Tom Brady did during his 2nd year.

How many games Brady won in cold weather in the middle of his second year in the league?
???

Nobody's talking about Brady in his first or second year starting versus Sanchez in his first two years; that's irrelevant. His comment was in regards to how well Sanchez can be expected to play this year in colder weather. He did have a lot of mediocre to just plain bad games once the weather got cold last year; would you dispute that?

But for the record, in Brady's first year as a starter the Pats started out 5-5, but ended up winning the Super Bowl. I think he was adequate in cold weather early in his career.

Name the handful of plays please. I happen to name some. Please do the same.

Weren't the 2003 NFL Champion Patriots shut out 31-0 after having all pre-season to prepare for the Bills? At the time you guys were 0-1 and were coming off a year of just missing the playoffs. Be honest: After that game...at that time: Did you have confidence in your team doing well after that embarrassing loss?

No...no one can. But was that a byproduct of him being in the cold or hi being a rookie QB that teams finally caught up with. He had 3 turnovers in a domed game vs NO. Had nothing to do with being in the cold. Just rookie mistakes.
