I know this belongs in the NFL forum, but I figured I'd post it here first and mods can move it there later.

NFL.com news: Raiders' Seymour fined $25K for striking Steelers' Roethlisberger

Oakland Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour has been fined $25,000 for striking Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, reports NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, via a league source.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison feels that the NFL should suspend Seymour, who was ejected after punching Roethlisberger in the jaw with an open hand in the Steelers' 35-3 win on Sunday.

"I don't see why not," Harrison told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "They're trying to suspend guys for hits when that's within the whistles, some hits that guys can't even stop from doing. It's an adjustment that a receiver makes to what you are about to do to him, and you end up hitting helmet to helmet. You're talking about suspending a guy for that? You tell me what the next step is for a guy who blatantly, outside the play, it's already thrown, and a guy is going to celebrate with his teammates and you punch him in the face."

It almost makes me sick to do so, but I agree with James Harrison. Very valid point. Seymour should be fined and suspended for at least one game. Don't get me wrong, I loved it. But it doesn't matter who he did it to... you don't punch someone else in the face in the middle of a game. If the league is going to threaten to suspend guys for helmet-to-helmet hits that can't be avoided, they should absolutely suspend the guys who consciously make the decision punch their opponents in the jaw.

I'm guessing the fact Seymour was ejected and missed more than half of the game as a result may have had something to do with the decision to not suspend him.

I'm also wondering what Big Ben said to provoke the hit.

Wow.

They went really light on Big Sey there.

There must have been some mitigating evidence against Roethlisberger.

To me, it's irrelevant when the infraction in question occurred in the game. The crime still happened. I doubt it's going to matter what quarter James Harrison commits a helmet-to-helmet penalty in. If he does it, he's likely going to get suspended regardless. Same should have happened with Seymour.

But, then again, one can make the argument that Seymour is a first time offender as well.

Love the fact there's no suspension.

Love that the fine is shockingly low. I was expecting 50-100k.

Interesting aspect to this has been the fan reaction. Looking at comments on Yahoo Sports, PFT etc. and there's a lot of "he had it coming" sentiment from people who don't appear to have a dog in this fight.

If he had done it to Matt Ryan or Flacco I don't think you would see anyone taking up for Seymour.

We should all pitch in to help pay the fine. Totally worth $20. Would pay more for another.

From a pure safety standpoint, is a palm to the facemask while standing more or less dangerous than leading with the crown at the side of someones head at full speed?

I would have suspended him, but to respond to Harrison, perhaps what Seymour did is not as dangerous

$25k for someone who is playing on a franchise tender...

Light wasn't suspended either for beating the crap out of Cranning Chowder. Then again, that was more straight up while Seymour just blasted Ben outta nowhere it seemed. I'm definitely a little bit suprised by no suspension for this

It might have, but that is a sorry excuse for not suspending him. As Kontra stated, if you are going to fine a guy 75,000 dollars for helmet to helmet hits then punching/stiff arming a QB should have been 6 figures and a game suspension.

I like Seymour but there is no place for that garbage in football. Ben could have told Seymour that he was taking Seymour's sister out for a drink for all I care, it doesn't warrant that.

The NFL screwed up and clearly have their priorities out of order.

You can provoke all you want, but for someone to respond with violence is wrong.. the old sticks and stones thing.

I think Seymour should have received a $25,000 bonus and thanks from the ladies of Pittsburgh for *****-slapping him.

And really, an open-handed slap to the face of a trash-talking moron in the middle of the orchestrated violence that is an NFL game is hardly something worth getting one's panties in a knot over.

I think people are letting their hatred of BB obscure the fact that this was a pretty lousy precedent to set for other players in the league. $25K + no suspension is a pretty lightweight penalty for potentially taking a player out after the whistle. And it makes the league appear that much more disorganized and arbitrary in its efforts to curb unnecessary violence.

For those applauding Seymour for acting as some sort of avenging angel dishing out karmic justice: it's one thing to be happy a guy you hate is on the receiving end, but it's quite another to applaud Seymour himself for it, since I assure you Seymour the player wasn't thinking about "avenging women" or "dishing out justice" when he popped off. He's just a guy who completely lost it on the field. Nothing more. That sort of thing shouldn't be rewarded.

For those saying Harrison's hit was more violent and therefore deserving of a higher fine, I guess I can respect that opinion but I think it misses a key point: Harrison's hit was a football play between the whistles, whereas Seymour's was an objectively cheap shot *after* the whistle.

For those saying Roethlisberger deserved it for provoking him by saying something, should KG have been punched in the face for trash-talking Villaneuva? Should Philip Rivers get punched in the face for his schtick? Does every bit of trash talk in every game give a green light to players to sucker punch the trash talker?

Finally, I don't understand why people are so sure that Roethlisberger actually said something, when Seymour himself has said he doesn't know if Roethlisberger said anything. Regardless of your opinions of what's happened with BB off the field, on the field his M.O. he has never been known as a trash talker (he is a far cry from, say, Rivers).

Both Chris K (Steelers) and Quintin Groves (Raiders) said Ben didn't do any talking, and he was just caught in the crossfire that had been going on between Kemo and Seymour all game. Groves said BB was trying to step between the two to break it up. If anything, it sounds like if something was said it was by Kemo, and Seymour just lit up the wrong guy.

"All the offensive linemen, as well as some of us, were getting chippy because they were chipping after the whistle," Oakland linebacker Quentin Groves said. "As Ben goes and tries and break the fight up, Richard reacts. That's just a reaction that a fighter has, and that's what he is, a fighter. To react like that is just a basic combination."

Seymour said he was confused by Roethlisberger approaching him after the score.

"I'm not sure why he [Roethlisberger] ran up on me. I just turned around and it was a natural reaction," Seymour told media after the 35-3 loss.

Seymour said he doesn't remember Roethlisberger saying anything to him and Roethlisberger said afterwards he was stunned by Seymour's actions.

Kemoeatu said what happened earlier in the game led to what happened on that particular play.

"When it's physical like that, sometimes you exchange words," Kemoeatu said. "(Seymour) said something, I said something. You start doing last minute shoving after the whistle and it gets bad from there. I think it just exploded."

That particular play started with Seymour bull-rushing Kemoeatu.

"I grabbed him and threw him down and he was trying to twist my ankle," Kemoeatu said. "I kind of exchanged words with him. He got up and I think Ben was the one right there. He just overreacted in the heat of battle and exploded."
