Passing ...and stopping the pass. That's the NFL now. The Jets go the length of the field in a half minute...TD. Manning ....two 2+ minute drives, two TDs.
The common denominators in these two games:
1) Quick WRs that run precise routes
2) Depth deficient secondaries
3) Anemic pass rush
4) FATIGUE
Manning threw the ball 52 times yesterday. Thats 52 pass rushes up front, 52 coverages by the Patriots thin secondary. No wonder Manning gained steam as the game progressed. These guys had to be sucking gas and I will use the same analogy that is universally accepted during snow games. Be it snow or fatigue, the offense has the advantage because they know where they are going....and yesterday a tired defense was slow to react.
A guy like Woodhead, shifty and quick, becomes a force in the second half of games when the D-lines are beaten down. On the other side, Big Vince was anchoring the Dline, and with Wright out, the pressure on Manning that was effective in the first half faded dramatically in the 4th. Advantage passing team.
My point is this, the NFL is a passing league more so than ever and to be successful defending the pass, the amount of QUALITY DEPTH is more important than ever. You know a Brady lead offense will put points on the board and more often than not, the other team will be chasing them through the air, like last night. Looking at next year's draft, I can easily see a CB taken no later than the Carolina pick (#33 as of today) and of course a young stud pass rusher to add depth to a group lacking 4th quarter burst. These games become battles of attrition and defenses need quality fresh legs when the game is on the line.

The d-line needs to be improved in the off-season.There was no pass rush and this team hardly blitz.I thought the 34 defense was about blitzing. Our corners are still a weak spot.:mad:Too much time to throw the football.

Yes definately fatigued.... But thats football! and especially playing the colts! No huddle and Manning on 3rd down.. well its always going to be tough.

I feel like we have some good cover corners... remember We lost Bodden so our secondary has a different look then what was planned.. I mostly see some missed assignments and stuff that I would expect with young players..

It's hard to see what they will do with their 6 picks in the first 3 rounds.. I would love to see them get a real impact player.. RB maybe, Maybe even trade a pick for a experienced WR.. Larry Fitzgerald... Ocho Cinco... I could see either of those guys leaving their teams and maybe coming here.. And sure even CB..

Thats the mistery that is BB... who knows what we will get.. Maybe we will trade all of picks for 28 picks in the 2015 draft :D

It is a shame we didn't win... wait, what?

The return of a healthy Warren and Bodden will help both the starting talent level and the overall depth as well. I think if the Pats can draft a quality DE early then that will create more opportunities for the OLBs to get more pressure on the opposing QB.

Do you know what generally happens when you blitz Peyton Manning?

sicne when exactly does our D line pressure the QB???

if you're looking for pressure, its gonna have to come from the lb's...

With the exception of 06, Warren has never been a big pass rush guy. Bodden is a major upgrade over the whomever mans the RCB spot. Quite frankly, I like our secondary in 2011.

We don't need "sack artists" per se. We need guys who can make QBs rush their throws, move them around so that they are not as accurate. Qb hurries and pressures are just as good as long as they translate into incompletions and 3rd down stops.

Hm? With minimal rushers, there were guys around Manning a lot. Sadly, he's still Peyton Manning, one of the best QB's of ALL TIME.

I wonder how many of our D players have ever faced Manning before? Less than half?

Are there really people on this board that didn't know Manning was gonna get a ton of yards passing. He's a great QB with a great arm. He's been doing that to us for a long time, what matters against the Colts is the W. While the rooks live and learn.

Moving forward, this team will need another quality DE (1st round pick, please) and OLB on the defensive side.

Warren
Wilfork
Mayo
Spikes/Guyton
Cunningham
Meriweather/Sanders
Chung/Sanders
McCourty
Bodden
Wilhite
Butler

That's 11 of 13 positions that look to be filled already (2 DL, 2 ILB, 1OLB, 2CB, 2S, Nickel DB, Dime DB).

If they can get those two positions filled, the depth will be there by default, because they'll just be sliding everyone else down a run on their positional ladder.

The Pats need to add another DL and an OLB for next season. Also, the CB position might need to be addressed as well especially if Bodden does not return.

True. But if he and/or a new DE can get the attention of two offensive linemen rather than just one, then that would open things up for an OLB to get pressure on an opposing QB.

Bodden's return means that Arrington can rightfully return to a lower place in the CB rotation. He's performed far better than I would have ever imagined he would, but I'd much rather he not be starting. He's being forced into a role that he shouldn't have to be doing.

fatigued or not, Manning was hitting some impossible throws. Until the final minute of course.

I'm not sure if Ty Warren's head is still in football. Both lines should be a top priority.

Great points. Can't blitz Manning though. He is more effective when you blitz. Gotta keep defenders back to cover and rush with 4-men.

Some 1st downs in the 4th Q on the other side of the ball make this a moot point though.

Problem is the Pats cant get any type of pass rush with only 4 guys, and when you give any QB all day to throw, he is going to find an open WR eventually.

Couldn't agree more on both your points.

re: Warren- I directly attribute Ty Warren's sacks to Seymour. #93 attracted more double and triple teams than you could shake a stick at. from 2002-2005 he was virtually unblockable.

That last pick by Manning was influenced by pressure, no sack, but just enough to alter the pass a little.
