It's very frustrating to watch this offense turtle when the game gets close in the 4th qtr. I think playcalling is a major reason why. They get conservative.
In the case of the Colts their D is not very big but they are very quick.
So why is Brady throwing into tight coverage to the smurf receivers when he can be elevating his passes to his tall athletic TE'S??

WHY ARE THE TIGHT ENDS BEING IGNORED WHEN THIS TEAM NEEDS TO MOVE THE CHAINS/KEEP POSSESSION/PUT THE GAME AWAY?

How does 6' 6" Gronk have only 1 catch against a smallish Colt D???
The fast and athletic Aaron Hernandez had 1 catch for the game.
Crump had zero catches.
It's scary but in crunch time this team reverts back to its' old and bad habits, i.e not utilizing the weapons it has at TE.
It's crazy how the Patriots limit themselves on offense at times.
Sooner or later it's going to kill this team in a big game. Let's hope today is a good teaching moment and they figure it out.
If the D is packing it in then elevate the passing game with those big tall TE's.

BB said as much in the post game presser....."if you keep throwing 2 yeard pases and dont stretch the field the opposing D will just stay in" and keep t'ing it up

I was hoping for a PAP on 2nd down on the last possession. It had worked so well the last 2 weeks had to keep going with it. That was my only true gripe with the playcalling.

The drive before I can't recall too well but I think it was just great D by the Colts. Hard to blame the playcalling too much IMO, just got to execute better.

Not only why are the TEs being ignored, why are we in the shotgun on first down on the 2nd to last drive against the 3rd worst run D in the league? We stopped the clock either 2 or three times and went three & out. GRRRR. That was dumb. Then they finally go to the run on the last drive, but instead of sending BJGE up the middle, where he does his best, they send him wide. HELLO, we are trying to win here!!!

The TEs major role today was to protect Brady and be an extra blocker(s) in the running game. I thought that Gronk and Crumpler had very solid games. They are very good blockers, not just for a TE but for any position. They did a nice job helping with Light on Freeney. I thought they played very well. Because the focus was on the running game and protecting Brady that is why Hernandez didnt play as much as was shown earlier in the year. Hernandez was used, he caught a TD pass.

Since the Pats have 3 TEs who all have different qualities it depends on the opponent as to how they will be used. If they want a more of a running/blocking attack then you will see more of Gronk and Crumpler. If the Pats want to spread the field and line up with 4 and 5 wide then you will see Hernandez since he is more of a WR

Huh??? Since when have these TE's been catching 2 yd passes??
The Patriots never sought to exploit the size and athleticism of their TE's when they desperately needed a 1st down in the 4th qtr. The Patriots did a much better job at stopping their own offense than the Colt D did in that 4th qtr. Do the Colts have a defender who can out-leap 6'6" Gronk for a sky pass?? We'll never know because the Patriots never tried to exploit Gronk's size against that smallish D.

Just another learning skill for O'Brien to utilize. The "coordinators" are learning just like the players are.

One person saying we need to be more conservative, another saying we need to be less conservative.

Sounds to me like we're more upset with the execution, not the scheme and play calling.

Nope, it's playcalling I'm mad at. WTF were they doing on those last two "drives" where we went three & out and almost handed Manning the game? They should have run BJGE up the middle on the first series, and if he didn't work, they should have tried Woodhead up the middle. If they wanted to throw, why not go to one of the TEs, who they hadn't thrown to all day?

In the 4th quarter our opponents were, in order:
1) The clock
2) The Colts

By using the run, we shortened the 4th quarter. We shortened it enough that the Colts were frenetically trying to score and had 25 seconds left when they failed.
If we threw the ball and had incompletions, the game is lengthened, what you do not want when you are ahead.
IT WORKED

All you are doing is naming what they didnt do (actually they did those things but you are questioning why they didnt do what didnt work on the 2nd drive on the first one as well) and saying its bad play calling

True, I had no problem with the play calling on O. Defense on the other hand... I mentioned Pees's name too many times in the chat room

Not true. On the 2nd drive they had BJGE run wide, when he should have been going up the middle.

His two biggest gains were on the outside.

What? A run is a run. It is the players responsibility not to go out of bounce. You dont just not call runs to the outside.

Didn't they go shotgun, empty backfield on the first play of the second-to-last drive? That kind of kills some of the mystery for the D, I think.

Again, you are just listing things that didnt happen and pretending they would have had a better result with no basis.

What? Not sure what you are saying. I imagine that runs are always called either up the middle or left or right. Otherwise, the o-line won't know where the runner is going. The thread asked what I thought of the Patriots prevent offense. I didn't like the play calling. I thought it was all wrong and it almost cost us the game. I am entitled to my opinion and that is all I am giving.

Yes, a dumb playcall when you are trying to kill the clock against a team with a lousy run D. It stopped the clock when it went incomplete and we ended up going 3 and out.

Apparently we're required to march down the field every time we touch the ball.
