According to reports from Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Red Sox have expressed interest in trading for Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton and the two sides have had preliminary discussions about a possible swap for the 24 year old RF.

I don't know if I could be any more in favor of this move. I am 150 percent emphatically behind acquiring Upton and would tag him as priority number 1. I'd rather have him at this point than any available player the Red Sox might be targeting. Yes, I include Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder and Cliff Lee in that mix.

Upton at 24 hasn't even come CLOSE to scratching the surface and he's already extremely good now. Two years ago, Upton had a breakout season in which he slugged .532 with 26 home runs and a .300 batting average.

At $50 million over the next five seasons, he's under contract at a bargain price and I'm absolutely stunned Arizona's even considering listening to offers for him.

There's really one downside to possibly getting him, and that's the fact that he's going to cost anyone who trades him a decent haul. I can tell you right off the bat, Arizona has asked for Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Kalish. Arizona rightfully isn't trading him for cheap.

To me, as high of an upside as all three have, I'd do it. He brings more to the table than either Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth, he is younger and has more upside than both and comes at a FRACTION of what either Crawford or Werth are going to command.

Think of this.. Justin Upton at RF, Mike Cameron in CF, Jacoby Ellsbury at LF? Yep, I'll take that in a heartbeat.

I don't disagree with you on anything except for 1 player....I wouldn't trade Casey Kelly.....Give them 2 other prospects in his place but I don't want him to go anywhere but to the Majors for the Sox...

You don't want Justin Upton. He's lazy and doesn't care. I've been following him ever since the D'Backs drafted him and heard about how he's the next Ken Griffey Jr. He'll show you just enough promise so you keep him around.

The acquisition would be interesting but I wouldn't trade Ryan Kalish and Casey Keller for him.

I really don't know too much about those players, but considering what the Sox have done with home grown players I wouldn't pull that trigger.

I think the trade would take Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, and Casey Kelly.

Then they could re-sign Adrian Beltre and possibly Victor Martinez.

mike cameron?? hes a huge hole in center at this point in his career. if the sox go into next year with him in center im not very excited about that.

thats most likely the reason the dbacks want to trade him.

I was hating on it this year ... not even a decent bandaid move last year.

Latest rumor I've heard regarding Upton.. Mind you, like all rumors, there's no guarantee if this is going to materialize.

Rumor has it the Diamondbacks and Red Sox had discussed the possibility of a trade which would send Upton to Boston for Papelbon, Ryan Kalish, Anthony Rizzo and Michael Bowden. The Diamondbacks in turn would spin Papelbon to the Braves for Jair Jurrjens and Craig Kimbrel.

The assumption on this rumor: if the Red Sox make this move, I expect them to target another late innings relief pitcher and will slide Bard into the closer position. I'm also assuming that they don't feel confident in their chances of keeping Paps long term.

Losing Kalish, Rizzo and Bowden be steep, but they don't have to trade Ellsbury or Kelly. Upton and Ellsbury give them a nice OF duo to work with for the future.

the dbacks can keep upton. hopefully this doesnt happen. if they trade for anybody i hope its gonzo from the padres.

That's a horrible outcome for the Red Sox and quite frankly Theo isn't that stupid.

I agree ..........
if they really feel the need for a outfielder than i would rather see them buy one of the free agents this year. carl crawford or jason werth. i personally think they need more pitching because josh beckett and john lackey suck balls.

That move makes no sense all around. First, it's not enough from the Sox. Bowden is a B prospect more or less at this point, and while Kalish and Rizzo are nice prospects, they aren't on the level that The Dbacks are looking for. Upton is one of the premier young players in the league, so it will be a couple of surer fire prospects than those two. Papelbon to the Braves makes even less sense. Why would Atlanta trade Jurrjens for an overpaid closer coming off his worst year, who can be a free agent 12 months from now, when they can go out and sign a guy off the market for less.

If the Sox want Upton, it will take a serious package of players. We're talking something like Kelly (who lacks velocity IMO), Ellsbury, Bard, Kalish, etc. Some mix of those players, and we're talking 3-4 of them. That's why I don't think the Sox will aquire him. It's why I don't think a lot of teams with some coin to spend, will. Teams with deep systems, and a middle of the road payroll (or lower) might, simply because he'd provide some cost certainty moving forward. Take Toronto for example, or maybe a team like Oakland. Those teams have good systems, with some talent to spare, and desparately need a middle of the order bat for 5 years and $50 million. Upton could be that 30-35 homer guy for them. I personally don't see Theo giving up what the D'backs will be looking for. Unless of course he moves someone like Bucholz, who would shorten the overall package of players considerably. Anyone see that happening? I don't. Possible since the Sox have a deep rotation, but unlikely.
