We hear all the time opinions on whether you'd choose Brady or Manning if you were to start a new NFL franchise. For most of us on this board, the answer is Brady by a wide margin. However, I'm curious to know whether the fans here would choose Tom Brady in his prime as our QB or Bill Belichick as our head coach for the next ten years if one could only have one of these valued assets. I'd go Belichick because I believe he will find a way to win regardless of the talent and overtime will build a winner.

C'mon mate... you'd always take Belichick.

that's a tough one - that is like asking what is more important, food or oxygen.

Belichick all day long ... he can coach for more years than Tom can play.

Brady. Great QB play is always more likely to carry a team than great coaching.

If Bill left today I'm fairly certain we could be competitive for the next 5 years with Tom, as long as the next coach isn't completely clueless. If Brady leaves today a mediocre quarterback isn't leading this team to great heights.

Belichick, no question about it.

As previously stated, BB can coach for more years than Brady can play, and BB has shown that he can be successful with a backup QB. If Brady were to retire tomorrow BB would find a way to make the team competative.

a better way to ask this question is to think about who is harder to replace.

Brady may be the best QB in the league, but by a relatively small margin. Before you argue this point, think about how many people in the country think Brady is the best QB to begin with. Probably less than 50%.

But there is no coach even close to Belichick. (don't know who this Belichek guy is you asked about by the way). No where in sight is a better coach. Plus he is responsible for defense and special teams which combined is more important than offense.

Well, you can't survive more than minutes without oxygen...but people survive months without food.

To me, if the choice was between Brady and any other Coach of my choice vs. taking BB and any other QB...
I'd choose BB + Manning and have plenty of rings on my finger.

except under that scenario BB would not be as happy since he came out and said already that he wants no other QB but Brady.

That is not a fair hypothetical as BB helped make the Pats everything they are today. I'd be ok if my Dad passed away (god forbid) but my 16 month old would not survive without me. That does not make me a better father.

By the way, didn't Matt Cassel prove that we could be almost as good?

Well put.

I didn't know he actually said that...but I would certainly believe it.
However, I think BB finds a way to win with the likes of Manning, Brees, or even Rivers...maybe even Big Ben.

Who's Belichek

But really, I'd take BB. The man is a genius and whenever people come out and question it he proves them wrong.

this.
Brady wants to play for a long time, but Belichick can have a longer impact

I thought the same way till i remembered that we went 11-5 with cassel in here in his 1st year ever starting.

I think your more guaranteed success with brady initially as he is actually on the field throwing the ball. But i think bellicheck would put your team and your franchise in a better position to win consistently and for longer and also possess the ability to coach around less talent

It's more Brady than Belichick.

Belichick without Brady: 51-62, 1 playoff win, 0 super bowls

Belichick with Brady: 104-32, 14 playoff wins, 3 super bowls

Matt Cassel is doing this year with the Chiefs what he did in 2008 with the Patriots, ie, being competitive against a creampuff schedule. I wouldn't, however, say Todd Haley is as good coach as Bill Belichick.

Please tell me how that comment is productive to the debate? Seriously bro, we all know he spelled Belichick wrong, but there's no reason to just leave a comment that says just that. The OP brought up a real interesting debate, how bout you add something to the conversation rather than just make brash comments. You weren't funny.

Now, to the OP's question, I say Belichick. I really had to put a lot of thought into it. For one, you see a team like the Colts. It doesn't matter who the receivers or head coach are, Peyton will always keep that team in contention. I believe that Brady can do this as well, but not to the same extent (that's not to say I'd pick Manning for my team over Brady, I wouldn't).

Bill Belichick doesn't just shape players on the field, he is a talent evaluator. He has a system that works. Plus, in terms of longevity, Belichick would probably be around longer.

Just ask yourself this: If someone said, in 2011, that the Patriots would be losing Bill Belichick, what would you think? Would the Patriots be the same team? No, I feel like their identity would be completely changed.

But switch it around. Say Tom Brady wasn't there in 2011, would the Patriots be the same team? Of course not, it would suck. However, I still think they would have that PATRIOT IDENTITY, that would not exist without Bill Belichick.

It's a good thing this is just a hypothetical question though, eh?

Manning will always keep his team in contention? Just like he did in 1998 and 2001.

Seriously, we all know whom he speaks of. We don't need the grammar police. Ie, you didn't start your sentence with a capital letter or end your sentence with a punctuation mark.

Back on topic; I would say Brady is the part that is more essential short term and BB is more essential for longevity. Having a great quarterback is a good problem to have, but don't underestimate the cummulitive effects of continually mishandling personnel.

Pretty much. As for me, I'd take Belichick as well. But I'm glad that I don't HAVE to choose between the two.
