Aaron Hernandez had 0 catches against the Steelers, including a particularly odious drop on a WR screen with 10:51 remaining in the 2nd.

He's also facing more CB coverage and less LB coverage, and to counter the Pats are hiding him in the backfield and slipping him out on various screens and RB routes.

OTOH, he does have a 101-yard game and 435 yards receiving under his belt -- impressive accomplishments for a rookie TE.

What's your take on the rookie to date, and his outlook for the rest of the year?

BUST

Another lousy pick

Re: Hernandez Fading?

Knee jerk reaction? How much more could people ask from our rookies this season? Last week Gronk was on the chopping block if memory serves.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

He's being taken seriously and so teams are covering him better.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

Gronkowski is the all-around tight end.
Crumpler is the blocking specialist
Hernandez is the receiving specialist.

The team will mix and match based upon the opponent.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

Game plan. He'll have the type of game against Indy that Gronk had against Pittsburgh.

The Pats are spreading the wealth like old times.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

I don't remember seeing him at all vs pitts, waiting to see reiss' play/snap chart. I wonder if they will go back to him next week or if they are going to want crump and gronk helping block freeney and mathis.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

I don't think there's anything to worry about. The Pats no longer have their deep threat and getting too predictable on O would be a recipe for disaster. Like they did in the old days, they are featuring different players every game and trying to surprise the enemy a bit. I'm sure this week the D will focus more on Gronk, and therefore, Hernandez may see the ball more. Woodhead wasn't targeted much (or at all?) against the Steelers either. They threw to the Lawfirm instead, and that worked well. Now the Colts will have to think about both of them in the short passing game.

Re: Hernandez Fading?

I'd say it's a combination of "he had a bad game" and "he wasn't featured". To have had as minimal of an impact as he had, it couldn't entirely be one or the other. No big deal, not worried about it. Gronk produced enough for both of them, anyways.

Something tells me that we'll probably see more of him on Sunday against the Colts.

Exactly. He wasn't going to be able to handle Pittsburgh's big linebackers, but he will be tearing up the field on the Colts tampa 2 and doing a lot of blocking because they're smaller and faster.

I wont lie, I just laughed my ass off reading that.

I think he was on a rough stretch, and the game planning called for Gronk. Belichick obviously wanted to abuse the match up of Gronkowski as long as the Steelers wouldn't do anything to counter it. I expect him to play inline versus the Colts, chipping Freeney or Mathis before executing his route.

THIS

With Moss, everyone in the NFL knew that Brady would try to get him the ball, preferably deep.

Now, nobody knows what to expect facing NE. Defenses cannot take away every weapon that NE has.

didnt he have 2 tds a week ago?

Re: Hernandez Fading?

Personally, I think Gronk will get another huge game against the Colts, considering that the only options for covering him are all basically either under 6'1'' or under 210 pounds. He'll dominate that matchup either way.
