This Week's Power Rankings

I LOVE that last line about Brady there: "In other words, Tom Brady has a shot at the Hall of Fame if he can just improve on his 14-4 playoff record."

Classic! :D

A little OT but I really don't understand people's infatuation with the Giants (well, with NY teams in general). The Giants have had a pretty easy schedule so far this year and still managed some close games and pathetic losses. How are they ranked 5th? Particularly after and embarrassing loss to the Cowboys (rofl). I just don't see it.

1 Sep 12 CAR 18 @ NYG 31 yay beat the panthers?
2 Sep 19 NYG 14 @ IND 38 trounced by indy
3 Sep 26 TEN 29 @ NYG 10 smacked by the Titans
4 Oct 03 CHI 3 @ NYG 17 ok, beat the bears
5 Oct 10 NYG 34 @ HOU 10 nice win vs hou
6 Oct 17 DET 20 @ NYG 28 barely beat the lions, fail.
7 Oct 25 NYG 41 @ DAL 35 barely beat dallas, fail.
8 Bye
9 Nov 07 NYG 41 @ SEA 7 yay beat the seahawks?
10 Nov 14 DAL 33 @ NYG 20 reality check vs dallas

Is that really the record of a top 5 contender?

I dont think its that tough to get.

A recent SB winner  who has a good record is almost always going to be considered a contender. That said I would put the Saints and Atlants ahead of them (not factoring the afc teams they would leap in doing so). Saints for similar reasons but their win was more recent and some of the injured guys they are getting back are no slouches and Falcons because well their record is better and Matt Ryan really seems to be coming into his own.

I am going to Say Pats V Jets in the AFC championship and the Falcons V Eagles in the NFC championship. With it winding up Pats V. Falcons.

By this logic, New Orleans should certainly be rated higher than the giants. If one is allowed to look at recent history (last year), then the giants should be expected to fold and the saints should be expected to win in the NFC.

Power ratings are supposed to measuring the strength of teams THIS YEAR.

What is surprsing to me is that this set of rankings has BALT, INDY and PITT so low with the same record as other teams.

I think the nature of the Giants win at Dallas is what impressed people. And if people are going to gush over the Jest for barely beating the Lions in OT, when they should have lost, then it should be no surprise that people won't hold a close regulation win over the Lions against the Giants.

Also, the Giants propensity for IR'ing opposing QBs gets the media's attention.

The Giants have a pretty complete team - best D-line in the league, good secondary, solid running & passing games.

What team doesn't have close wins combined with an embarassing loss or 2?

Hahaha I addressed your question by editing my original post before I even saw your post.

I see nothing wrong with using past success to factor into a power ranking as how a team/players perform in the playoffs and clutch moments is important and I would think this logic could be used to break a tie but it is not an end all be all which is why I would still put the Falcons ahead of both the Saints and Giants.

YAWN - Who cares about power rankings, let alone be upset by them. They are worth NOTHING and I'm ashamed I even took this long to post on this thread...let alone open it. ;)

As #14 defense points allowed per game, I have a hard time with "best D-line". They do well in yards per game, but when the plays count, they fold up.

I'm with mgteich on this. A lot can change for a team season to season. Only the now matters.

lol. True, however my comment really isn't power rating specific. The Giants seem to be a media darling this year. I think it is mostly because of this:

So basically, they are top 5 for targeting QBs. I don't know just seems wrong to me. Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled Pats are the underdogs still (hooray) program!

p.s.

Couldn't agree more. I've been impressed by him.

I had to re-read your post a couple of times and look each time at the date /time stamp. Then I rubbed my eyes and did it again.

Did I dream that Giants-Cowboys (1-7) game two days ago?

A couple of local power rankings:

It Is What It Is WEEI NFL Power Rankings: Week 11
1-5: Pats, Jets, Falcons, Eagles, Ravens
6-10: Steelers, Packers, Saints, Colts, Giants
Fresh off a dominating win in Pittsburgh, Tom Brady and the Patriots soar back to the No. 1 slot in the WEEI NFL Power Rankings. The 2010 NFL season has been a strange one to say the least. There has yet to be a team to emerge as one of the league’s elite. However, a few teams have shown signs of greatness. The New York Jets (No. 2) fall into that category. The J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets irked out another victory in overtime and are on the doorstep of being called “the best”.

Two NFC teams jump into the top five. Michael Vick’s former team (Falcons No. 3) and his current team (Eagles No. 4) represent the NFC well at the top. Matt Ryan and the Falcons won again at home against a strong Ravens squad. Meanwhile, the Eagles dominated their game against the Redskins in which they opened up the first quarter with 28 points (the best start for a road team, ever).

Finally, the No. 32 spot is occupied by a new owner. After a Bills victory, the Carolina Panthers now have the unpleasant title of “Worst team in the league”.

Pats 1. (5) 7-2
Every NFL team has a bad game. It’s how they respond the following week that shows how good they really are. The Pats once again bounced back from a loss, learned from their mistakes, and put a W in the column. Under the leadership of Bill Belichick, the Patriots are now 23-2 following a loss since 2003. The win in Pittsburgh is by-far their most impressive this year. They played physical, mistake-free football and made a statement across the league.
Here's what they have to say about this week's opponent:
Colts 9. (10) 6-3
Peyton Manning continues to lead his team to victories despite a plethora of injuries. We’ll learn a lot more about how well the Colts can play without their key starters in the next two weeks when they take on the Patriots and the Chargers.

NFL Power Rankings - Week 11 (2010) | NE Patriots Draft
1-5: Falcons, Pats, Jets, Eagles, Steelers
6-10: Giants, Saints, Ravens, Packers, Colts
The Patriots and Falcons certainly had strong showings against other top teams, leading to big gains in the rankings. Each face “prove-it” games this week, however, as the Falcons will have to face Sam Bradford and the upstart Rams, while the Patriots face some guy named Peyton Manning.

Eh, did we dream the 2-5 Cleveland game two weeks ago? Then again, I'm not one to base a team's quality on the strength of one game. The Giants are probably the best team in the NFC, and they laid an egg against a fired up Cowboy team.

NFL Power Rankings Week 11: Patriots, Eagles Rise Again -- NFL FanHouse
1-5: Pats, Eagles, Falcons, Jets, Packers
6-10: Giants, Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Saints

I've always felt the people that put these together put too much emphasis on the most recent game.
Apparently which games are on national TV has an effect also.
A confession: putting together NFL Power Rankings this season is impossible on a week-to-week basis. You have 10 or so teams that look like legitimate, top-of-the-mountain contenders, but no one's separating themselves in that group. Then there are about a dozen teams that are just mediocre, flat-out bad team. And then there's a handful of teams hovering around the .500 mark that aren't particularly good or bad.

So where do we land this week? With the Patriots back on top, following an emphatic thumping of the Steelers in Pittsburgh on Sunday night. Right behind them is Philadelphia, which crushed Washington on Monday night. The lesson: Win big in prime time and you get to move up the rankings.

1. Patriots (7-2) | Last Week: 4
Tom Brady put on a clinic at Pittsburgh on Sunday night. But more encouraging than that for the Patriots was that their line won the battles in the trenches almost all night against a physical Steelers team. Brady had time, Ben Roethlisberger did not, and that was one of the differences in the game.
7. Colts (6-3) | Last Week: 8
You look at Indianapolis' banged-up roster, and watch the Colts struggle with Cincinnati one week after losing to Philadelphia, and think that the Colts might not be that dangerous. Yet, there they are at 6-3 on top of their division. If they make the playoffs, this will still be a team no one wants to play.

I'd buy this if the Giants were beating a lot of good teams. They aren't.

Fair point. They beat the Bears (6-3) and Seahawks (5-4), but no other winning teams. Next week's game against the Eagles will tell the tale.

Indeed, I'm looking forward to that game. Much as I can't stand Vick, I have a feeling he's going to expose these guys.

I truly hope that the Giants defense will expose Vick, but if it's the other way around then I will have to think this defense is not as good as the one that beat us. That defense is the reason they've been getting high power rankings from many.

Defense + Hakeem Nicks + Ahmad Bradshaw - Offensive Turnovers - Mediocre Special Teams = Team with potential, but still better than most of the NFC.
