Soliciting opinions from BodyBuilders and others, as we all savor the Great Work our boys are forging, tonight...

Steve Maneri
was a major Binkie of mine, this past Draft...as an Offensive End.

At 6.7/265, that seemed like the right way to go, to me.

But as y'all know, the Planet Hoostens drafted him ~ and Coach Bill, God BLESS him!! ~ HOISTED him...as an Offensive Tackle.

And, now...He's listed at 290 pounds.

My question is this: It seems to me that the optimum weight for Offensive Tackles in his height range is about 310/315...Is it realistic to strive to beef up a guy 45-50 pounds worth??

He is halfway there, of course, if those numbers are all accurate.

The reason I was so passionate about Steve Maneri, this Spring, is because he is a ferocious Blocker ~ a savage, destructive Force.

And those who don't grasp the import of such a player on The Championship Quest...haven't been watching Alge Crumpler's work, this year...and tonight.

Doesn't matter what we believe or thought was possible. Dante Scarnecchia and Bill Belichick felt the potential was sufficient to claim the man and hold him for three weeks on the 53 man roster before moving him to the Practice Squad to continue development which at that point was nearly five months old.

Given that information, my guess is his ability to develop as desired is not unlikely. In fact, as the NFL closes out week ten of the regular season, an argument could be made for Maneri developing as NE hoped.

Maneri began his transition to OT in May when Houston first got their hands on him (they also run a zone blocking scheme). He'll have nearly 15 months conditioning from NFL strength and conditioning coaches and dietitians by the time NE starts full pad practices next July. If 310 is your minimum weight, 50 lbs in 15 months is 3.3 lb/mo, and he as already 3/5 of the way there after 4 months. Seems like they will know what they've got before they make a decision on re-signing Light, let alone before the draft.

Nonsense.

If it didn't matter, I wouldn't ask.

Leave us not forget: We pay the bills, you and I.

Yes.

I already made that point.

But cannot we agree ~ as intelligent men ~ that brilliant men make stupid moves all the time?? Otherwise: Why discuss ANY move he makes??

Personally, I'm inclined to think the move makes sense, for the obvious reasons: Coach Bill made the move, and he is a demonstrably brilliant man.

But my purpose in initiating this thread was to solicit independent opinions, not reminders of what I already know.

I often hear it said that 10-15 pounds of muscle in one year is a tremendous accomplishment...But I'm inclined to think that that is a relatively fluid number ~ that a 5.7 guy adds it with much more difficulty than a 6.7 guy ~ and all frames are different, as well...And I wonder if Maneri's alleged 25 pounds are all muscle ~ since April, mind you ~ or if some of that is lard...and how we should feel about that...That's all. I'm not putting lard DOWN: I tend to assume that Brother Wilfork isn't all muscle...but that doesn't stop me from loving what he DOES.

Pfft. If every person is different you are left to deal with generalities. Since you know the specifics of NE's interest, you have your answer for this individual and have no need to slum around in the general. He already had the muscle to block at a high level prior to the draft - per your own assessment - all 25 lbs didn't need to be muscle, it just needed to make it harder for defenders to out leverage him. The fact remains he began working with a dietitian and an NFL strength and conditioning expert once signed, if not beforehand depending on what his agent set up for him predraft, that means his new mass is more likely muscle than lard (or he wouldn't be in the program).

I'm cautiously optimistic about him, when we had to release him to get him on the P.S. I read that Houston asked him about going back but he wanted to stay with the Pats because he felt like Scar was the right coach for him.

We're carrying 10 offensive linemen. Have Maneri stashed on the practice squad. Kaczur on the IR. Ridiculous depth. Just hope we re-up Logan and Light. Does Ojinnaka getting the call ahead of Levoir indicate a little diespleasure in Levoir?

I'm really jazzed about this guy.

Steve Maneri already brings tremendous athleticism, power, strong hands, and dexterity to the position. Box and I seem to've had a bit of a clash, last night ~ I'm sure it had nothing to do with the quantity of Fizzy Lifting Drinks I'd elevated my thoughts with!! :D ~ but his apt prose was quite sufficient to allay any concerns I had, which were, in retrospect, spurious: Whatever his optimum weight for the position, there's really no reason at all to doubt that he'll get there, and get there soon ~ if he's not there already.

Frankly, with the combination of his natural athletic skills, his ferocity, his passion, his intelligence, and Dante's extraordinary ability to extract diamonds from raw coal...I think we have a potential All Pro on our hands.
