There are still Patriots among us...tho far fewer than there used to be it seems.

I look at it this way...If not for the few unselfish and brave young men & women, the many wouldn't be able to pursue their capitalistic goals. :rocker:

On behalf of my Grandfather, my father, myself and my son, all veterans, I'd like to say you are welcome. But really, the best way to thank a veteran is to pay it forward through some charitable program like Soldiers Angels, the Wounded Warrior Project, etc.

In a not so distant past those "veterans" would have left their family, professional football and everything they loved to serve over seas. It was an honor! People were proud to serve their country.

When I was 18 I joined the Army. I will never forget my uncle's reaction when I asked him if he had served; He was in his 50's, so I figured he might of been in Vietnam. He looked at me with almost pathetic eyes and said, no Mikey, I had (have) flat feet. They wouldn't take me.

He was ashamed! Far to many people in this country think freedom is a birth right! To many of our parents didn't teach us where we came from, and far to many people of my generation don't have a clue about what sacrifice truly is. Having an Ipod is not a right! Having the food you really want is not a right! Our country has lost sight of what matters the most and our political system has divided us to the point that we don't even know what being an American means anymore!


As a vet I say your welcome to those that have offered up their thanks!

And to the rest that haven't....Your welcome too! Somewhere a soldier is doing something you either can not do or are unwilling to do! And for that you should be damn thankful!

Enjoy your game on Sunday as the brave young men and women put their lives on the line for us in foreign lands, probably won't!

My moms grandfather was a fighter pilot in WW1, shot down a german airplane. Landed and took the Iron cross off the germans pilots body. I still have it.

My Dad was in Vietnam, but army logistic and diplomacy.
My Dads 2 brothers and 1 sister died in WW2 , he was too young, she was in the red cross. His sister died during a bombing raid and his 2 brothers in africa. His other brother my uncle bucky landed on D-day as a radio operator. Back then they trained with their high school class, he watched them all get shot up. He was on omaha beach. Told me a lot of stories.

Bucky made it 1/2 way up the beach and was hit with machine gun fire. He gave me a cigarette case they gave to the GI's with a map of france on the back, still have it.

After he was fixed up they shipped him to the Pacific, where he fought in Okinawa, Manila, etc..
He came back from the war, threw everything in a closet and never let anyone open it. The rest of his life was spent as a taxi driver in Washington D.C and drinking his butt off.

God bless him and what we put them threw. God bless our other boys

We set aside two days a year we honor our veterans without jokes. Of course, we should hnor them and thank them for their service at every opportunity.

And just BTW, for those who don't know, November 11th commemorates the end of WWI and used to be called Armistice Day.

No, I couldnt leave it alone..and contrary to popular beliefe, Vets do have sense of humor.

FYI, there is a FOB in Afghanistan named after him. It's a tiny bit south of where he died. It's about 15 miles from where I am at right now so I made it a point to make it out there this year and pay tribute to him. A wonderful story that makes me sad everytime I think of how it ended.

Did you by chance see any funny looking fellows cheering for the Vikings on Halloween?? I've got some guys in Speicher right now who would be silly enough to cheer for the Vikings!

Over the years, we have seen that there are many posters here who have served. Some like myself, some go back to Vietnam. It does sadden me that is almost as far back it goes now. WWII and Korean vets are becoming fewer and fewer.

When I think of Veterans I almost alway think of the WWII vets and the current vets. Although I usually don't go too many days without thinking about the guys that I served with, on Veterans Day the ones before and after me are the ones that I think about.

Now there was a time when a thread like this would turn political. Let's not let that happen.
