Bruschi:Five observations from a beatdown

This is a good read. Bruschi knows football and knows how to communicate the intricacies of football to lay audience.

The third point where he mentions Mangini knowing our plays inside out and how that helped their D to know Brady's counts is fantastic.

Many suspected this to be a tough game given Manigini's knowledge of our O but it is shocking, at least for me, to realize that the words/counts/strategies haven't changed that much since Mangini left and his knowledge was enough for him to teach his D how to stuff our O.

Hope he knows this much about the Jets too.

Thats a sad indictment of our coaching staff, IMO. Didn't they realize that might be a possibility. There were 3 ex-coaches over there. Why not change some things up? :bricks:

Does anyone think that Rob Ryan's brother Rex had some good talk earlier last week about how to beat a Belichick defense and offense?

I definately think there was some discussion between the two,Rob would be helping his brother out in his division and get his team a win at the same time if it worked to plan...which it did.

When I was a freshman in college, we were trailing Maryland by 6 late in the fourth when I fumbled less than 10 yards from scoring the winning TD. A pair of whimpy DB's took the ball from me. We ended up losing the game.

That was a humbling experience, looking those sweating and bleeding O line guys in the eye after they had worked their butts off so we could be in a position to score.

I wish Gronkowski the best as he overcomes this. My advise to him is to work harder in practice than everybody else on the field and hold your head up high and look everybody in the eye.

Yeah....and wouldn't u think BB would have done more to change/mix up the dummy counts KNOWING that mangina and most of his coaching staff had complete inside knowledge of our system??? BB just got outcoached again.....its not going to get any easier....

Amen....a sad indictment indeed....I think kraft needs to step in and force BB's hand on the issue....get some veteran, skilled, and seasoned coordinators in NE again...one man can't do it alone...

This is an absurd comment. Why would Kraft step in, kind of like Jerry Jones does? How is that working out?

Coahing staff is doing a good job. 6 of 11 starters are either 2nd yr players or rookies and Mayo is in his 3rd year. Oh yeah, the team is 6-2 and in first place in their division. It's one game.

You bet....they definitely did.

Did you see how excited Cleveland's O-coordinator was?
Wow-I wanted to hit

Good stuff from Bruschi as always. Calls out Tully for biting on a McCoy play action. (One additional downside to what McCoy did Sunday is that it is now on film and the Jets know what to expect.)

Because over half of your gameday roster is either rookies or 2nd year players still trying to fully grasp the system as is. Trying to change all of the terminology on the fly for one week would be counter productive and more likely than not, detrimental to the development of the youth.

And unlike many that reside on this board BB understands that a road loss to a desperate team playing good football is not the end of the season.

well..i dont know how anyone is assuming they didnt change things up. Sometimes the answer isnt just changing things up . The other team also deserves come credit.
And turnovers, dropped balls, missed tackles have nothing to do with changing things up.

Its only one game so its not a big deal. You have to realise the advantage the Browns had coming into this game.

They were coming off a bye week so they were fresh, they had two weeks to prepare for this game, they were at home and they have a lot of former New England Patriots staff. And they had just thumped the current Superbowl Champs in New Orleans before their bye week. the same Saints who went on to beat the Steelers the week after and had thumped the Bucs the week before they met the Browns.

The Browns are a better team that people are giving them credit for.

This could actually work in our favour. The players will be humbled by this and will work harder on every facet of their games. They have two really big games coming up the next two weeks and if they can get back on track and win those then this loss has served a purpose.

You could say the same thing about the Lions.

Good point. I guess I was responding to the specific comments in the post.

You missed the biggest issue from yesterday. Brady played like ****.

His worst game of the season by far. Did the receivers let him down in some spots? Yes, Tate should have caught that ball. Hernandez should have taken another step or two and caught that ball in stride for a TD.

But Brady misfired on a lot of throws, and his receivers bailed him out on some plays as well. He wasn't leading his receivers very well, often times hitting them on the back shoulder when they had a step on their man etc...

Definitely a clunker from Tommy yesterday.

Thats not what he said, he said they knew about the dummy snap count so all they did is hold their disguise til the ball was snapped. Im sure they changed some things up but the key was to not fall for the early snap count.

Even mangini knowing stuff does not mean it cannot be executed. the execution was poor because the practice this week was poor ... according to Meriweather ... the game was the same as the practice this week.

Oh well ... gonna lose a few every year you should win and vice versa.

While some may not grasp the significance of coaching vs. execution, others don't grasp the significance of the disciplined, read and react (to coverage accordingly post snap), throwing to a spot where the receiver should be open before he makes his break if he made the correct read or didn't cut off his route incorrectly system we run vs. throwing it to where the receiver not running the appropriate route or running the appropriate route incorrectly (depth wise) actually ends up...

Brady and Manning do more pre snap to facilitate their receivers and line blocking than any other QB's on the planet. When Manning befuddled by a disciplined defense disguising it's reads his offense is toast. Brady's is designed to remain viable because the other guys are supposed to be capable of reading what he sees post snap as well. That's why it's tougher to populate and learn and perform in than Mannings but over the long haul more dependable once you identify the right players and get them up to speed. We've been struggling with that for a while now, because it only takes one or two guys underperforming at any given time to screw the pooch. Yesterday a bunch of them underperformed but Brady wasn't one of them, he was their victim... And the easy out here is always blame the QB...because the alternative is to complicated to find an easy solution to.

I understand the principles of the read and react system we have. But when Brady throws it at the feet of an open receiver who ran a curl route and sat down in the open flat, I blame Brady. When the TE is running an in route at what appeared to be the proper depth, right across the defenders face and had a step on the defender and Brady hits his back shoulder instead of leading the receiver or just incase a defender was out of the TV view, hitting him in the front shoulder; I blame Brady.

Those are just two example of him misfiring Sunday. Again there is plenty of blame to go around and by no means am I excusing the receivers. But to say Brady was not part of the problem is not consistent with the reality of Sunday.
