So how does the Waiver wire work? I know lowest record gets priority but how long does each team get to decide if they want to claim someone?(Minute wise if it even works that way) Does every team that wants the player put in a claim and the team that has the highest priority wins? Do the teams talk to the player AT ALL before actually putting in the claim? Does anybody public get notified if a team submits a claim? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Any team can put in a claim but highest priority gets the claim. The only way we hear if a team puts in a claim is sources and rumors but it is never officially announced.

I assume they send a form via email. They have until 4pm tomorrow (24 hours).

They handle the supplemental draft with the teams sending a simple email. Can't imagine this any more complicated.

If one team puts in a claim they get him. If two or more submit a claim the highest priority is awarded the player.

I would assume teams in high profile cases (such as Moss) would at least put out feelers to gauge his interest in coming to the team. It would be silly not to, unless the team is hell bent on keeping him from a division/conference rival.

The teams who put the claim in (other than the winning team of course) would have to inform the public. The league won't, unless it is "leaked".

That's how it works and they cannot talk to the player before.

So basically we have to wait the full 24 hours to see if a player is claimed?
Also a team could claim a player that doesn't even want to play for them, thus creating more havoc/drama? lol

He was waived today so teams have until 4pm tomorrow to put in a claim.

Basically, 4pm today, we'll know. It's not like we can say, well 12 hours have passed so we know X number of teams must have passed on him. I wondered that too.

Yes, but the team holds the upper hand in this. If he doesn't report he is placed on a suspended/did not report list and doesn't get paid. He might also lose his free agency and be property of that team next year, depending upon the language of the next collective bargaining agreement.

Or a team could simply claim him off of waiver, give him a call. Chat with Randy, if Randy is cool with playing for them bring him in. If Randy says "no effing way, I have heard from other players about the quality of your caferteria" Team could say, "no problem, just askin, you will be back on the waiver wire tommorow. Have a nice day." Granted now that team and not Minn would be on the hook for Randy's salary instead of Minn if nobody picked him up in round 2.

I was wondering about that. In another thread, it states the Jets have talked to him. Either thats bogus, it's not a rule, or the Jets are in trouble.

That's the way it should work. But given the report he visited with JETS personnel on Tuesday before he was even placed on the wire would lead me to think someone should ask the league what the "official" rules are pertaining to tampering with a waiver wire player... Is everyone free to talk to the player whether they make a claim or not, or is the player off limits until you put in a claim or until he is awarded. FA can't "legally" talk to any team until the FA period opens for a reason (although we all know it happens back channel via agents). I would think waiver wire players should be off limits (officially) until they clear waivers in order to protect the rights both the waiving team who is on the hook for the salary if not claimed as well as of whichever team they might be awarded to...

If he passes thru all the teams without being claimed....Minny is on the hook for 75% of his salary? Thought I read that somewhere.

Does he then become a FA and can sign with any team, thus Pats could actually get him back with Minny paying 75% of his salary?

Confusing to say the least....:bricks:

Crap: Now I'm really confused....Randy has more than 4 accrued seasons....

"Players that have four or more accrued seasons that are released at this point immediately become free agents and are not subject to the waiver process."

If he passes thru waivers unclaimed Minny is on the hook for 100% of his remaining salary. If he is claimed the claiming team is on the hook for 100% of his remaining salary and Minnesota is off the hook, which makes the claim a significant financial risk since while they can still waive him if they have a change of heart, the claiming team would remain on the hook unless some other knucklehead subsequently takes their shot at claiming him...

If he remains unclaimed he is a UFA free to sign with any other team under any contract terms he chooses (long or short term) while he collects the remainder of his 2010 salary from the team who waived him so he essentially gets to double dip (get paid by the former team and the new team).

according to jason cole, since moss has already played 6 games he's eligible for free agency as per the cba:

i guess it's kind of like the logan mankins situation but in reverse.

Dream on...

To add to the discussion, I thought veterans (over 4 years) were not subject to the waiver wire? Does this only apply to training camp cuts?

it only applies before the trading deadline. after the trading deadline, all players are subject to waivers, vested veterans included.

thanks for the info. Not sure if it makes sense, but it probably does in some obscure way.
