Even though the Moss situation is current in the forefront of most of us, that won't be the focus of this post....though I'm sure I'll get to it eventually. ;)

1. The most impressive stat I thought that came out of the Vikings game was the fact that Adrian Peterson had 43 yds rushing in the first period, and only 49 for the next THREE quarters. Peterson, I thought was great. He made the most of every opportunity, and on that first drive it looked like he'd be looking at a 150 yd day. He made great cuts and yds after contact. He is probably the best RB the Pats will face this season.

However the "stat" is very telling. It tells us that the Pats improved their rush defense as the game went on. It tells you that the staff is capable of making adjustments on the fly. It tells you that the Players are capable of being coached up on the fly. All very good signs that point to the expectation that this defense has the capability to be a championship caliber defense by the time the playoffs roll around.

3. As to 3rd down conversions. The Vikings converted only 4 of 11 3rd downs (36%) another improvement. Maybe enough to get us out of the cellar. :D

4. Another point to make was that this overall continued improvement came against a good offense and the "good" Brett Farve. He wasn't a bit generous on Sunday. It could have been one of his better games of the year, so whatever we got, we earned.

5. Want to know another reason we are 6-1 TURNOVERS. Can you remember the last time the offense turned it over? (the inconsequential half time Hail Mary vs the Ravens) ZERO in the last 2 games, and that's significant. Neither the offense nor the defense is good enough yet to survive a game where we lose the turnover battle.

6 Any questions about the last 2 drafts? The offense has 4 guys who are major contributors (Volmer, Tate, Hernandez, and Gronk) The defense has 5 starters (Spikes, Cunningham, Chung, McCourty, and Deadrick), while Pryor, Brace, Fletcher and Butler all get regular playing time in sub packages. Plus on special teams you have Mezko, Ingram and Edelman, who also gets run on offense though doesn't see the ball much. That's SIXTEEN players who are key players on the team with the best record in the the NFL.

7. On the other hand, we have to temper optimism with realism. This defense DID give up over 400 yds of offense to the Vikings, and they aren't the first team to out gain us.

Our youth is also why we are 28th in total D and 19th in total Offense. Not exactly stellar numbers, but while they clearly don't tell the whole story, they DO tell us that in every game we play, for next month or so, our margin of error is slim. We still cannot afford to gift any team points or field position through turnovers. And both the offense and defense has to continue to improve, if this early success is to have any lasting meaning.

7. The Zoltan has been one our of best weapons on offense. He consistently pins offenses inside the 20, and on several occasions has given us much better field position, on several key occasions, than we had a right to expect. The scary thing is he has room to improve. Well worth the pick. Do not underestimate how important the improvement in our punting game has been thus far. (and welcome back from the grave Jake)

8. Marvin Pryor is going to be fined for his hit on Farve.....and its going to piss me off. Its one thing to penalize/fine a player for a blow to the head, but incidental contact/touching shouldn't be penalized. How can a player effectively rush the passer when he is afraid to raise his arms because he's afraid he might TOUCH the QB's helmet Maybe we should just give the QB a flag belt, or whistle the play dead with a 2 hand tag.

9. OK time to talk about Moss. I was very surprise, but in retrospect, after his emotional presser, I think the Vikings did the right thing.

10. Now what happens if he should pass through waivers and he becomes a FA. Should we try to get him back. I say (after several flip flops) YES. He has clearly slipped some as far as his physical talent goes, but he'd still be our most talented WR. With Moss the offense (which is now rather erratic to say the least), would be better with him. Here are some other reasons.

a. His experience with the coaching in Minnesota must have been eye opening, per his presser. I think he realized what a big mistake it was to try and shoot his way out of town. He's been humbled

b. He's never been a locker room problem, in fact he's good in the locker room.

c. After he's cleared waivers we can get him for the minimum because the Vikings would still be on the hook for his current contract.

d. Now you may be able to sign him to a reasonable long term contract (ie, 3 years with a $3MM with incentives that could double that #, and guarantee the base for 2 years).

e. I don't buy into Felger's opinion that we sold our soul to the god of talent after 2006 and lost the "Patriot Way", with Moss being the prime example. We are probably the best place for him both emotionally and professionally. And talent DOES matter, within the context of your system.

Under most of those conditions he'd be a value.....and we get a 3rd rounder :D

I got some more but I'm sure it will come out in the discussion. Enjoy

Against San Diego (deep ball offense) and Minnesota (deep ball loving QB) NE let the D-line manage the run and the CB/FS manage the deep ball, essentially riding the defensive game plan on the Linebacker's and SS's tackling ability to limit YAC.

If Moss ever ends up here there will be a senate investigation into how the pats could trade a player for a 3rd round pick and somehow get him back and keeps the pick. Maybe a senate investigation is a little exagerated, but i'm sure there would be a lot of GM's and Owners that would want to know how this could happen. In steps Goodell

i think the defense should be renamed from bend but don't break to lure and deceive. Bill let's you make some harmless plays then he gives you a different scheme from the same set you already saw ... suddenly it's 4th down and you don't know how it happened so quickly.

Thanks for your post game thoughts Ken. One point that I would like to make is that if Moss does somehow end up back in NE, watch out offensively - it will be scary good for Branch and Welker. From a realistic point of view, there is no way that Moss ends up in NE (this season) - 31 other teams won't allow it.

Whil;e i agree that it is a long shot. I don't know about the 31 other teams not allowing it. I don't think he should be claimed off waivers... because y would you pay his salary and maybe get a minnosota situation.

But i think it will be more a "the pats won't take him back/ another team offers him more money" kind of deal

I am very impressed with these comments, it seems that BB is shying away from signing the so called big names and moving toward developing his own talent that do things his way... too lazy to check this out, but weren't most of these dudes captains of their college football teams as well. What is going on right now is planned and calculated.. another aspect are the emergence of a lot of late round draft picks or UDFA's who play a significant role on this team.. Deadrick, Sergio Brown, Arrington, Connolly, Prior, Wendell, BJGE, Guyton, Fletcher etc.

Interesting to see 19th in total offense and first in scoring. It's not as if the turnovers are leading to a ton of short-field points - few outside of the Miami and SD games. It reminds me how often the Pats go three and out, but once they get a first down, they start to build a rhythm and often find their way to the end zone. It has the same statistical effect as the boom or bust, long-ball-to-Moss offense. It also is a credit to Brady's ability to work the tempo of a drive, whether it's the quick-snap on a run play, the no huddle, or simply getting to the LOS efficiently. It's remarkable really and has been quite evident with the new Mossless offense.

As for the Vikings needing to get rid of Moss, I disagree. They knew who they were trading for. How they can be suprised by this is beyond me. Talk to the man and let him know it won't be tolerated and then see who might be willing to give you a 4th or 5th round pick for him. Childress is a joke. He's the one who needs to be let go mid-year and Farve benched, while Tavaris Jackson gets some more experience and a very talented team gets ready for next year.

Ken, I love your posts, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. If he wasn't a locker room problem he'd still be playing for Minnesota, or Oakland, or New England or Minnesota.

Ken's right though, he's mostly a Front Office problem in NE.

As always, some really good points, especially about the adjustments to the run game. It makes me wonder if last year's failure to adjust at halftime had more to do with the players' inability to execute than coaching failures on the part of Pees/BOB.

Peterson got like 12 carries in the first quarter and then 12 carries for the rest of the game. Typical Childress, going away from the running game when it is clicking. Sure, the Patriots had stopped some of Peterson's runs, but he was still churning out yards....

This is exactly what happened. Childress left the run game when he started getting behind. He all but abandoned it after that goal line stop.

I think the most impressive stat was BJGE rushing 108 yards and getting 2 TDs in ONE HALF of the game!

Sorry, but I have to disagree about Moss coming back to New England. Won't happen.

BB loves him and all is well between them, but he fully realizes that Randy is like a tall tree in the forest that blocks all the sun from the younger, healthier trees that are trying to grow.

BB's best move this year was ripping down those dynasty photos inside Gillette and telling the young fellas that this is THEIR time to grow.....and they're not only doing it, but they're blasting the muther down.

If #8 is one continuos thought then I have to disagree, I believe the film shows that his facemask is squaring planted in Favre's chest and his arms are wrapped around his back, there was no blow to the head with a hand in the Pryor hit. there was however the accidental graze of the facemask by Guyton on another play that will most likely have a fine levied.

Bingo. Even the NFC Fox announcers who were polishing Favre toenails throughout the broadcast said it was a perfectly clean hit.

Trade deadline has passed; no 4th or 5th possibilities

Great posts, as always, Ken. I don't know what you do for a living, but you should work for the Patriots website writing this article for them.

I agree with every word. He is clearly a fantastic back and the Pats -- after the first quarter -- stopped him. Compliments to the coaches.

3. As to 3rd down conversions. The Vikings converted only 4 of 11 3rd downs (36%) another improvement. Maybe enough to get us out of the cellar. :D

Yes. I'm one of those who thinks that this stat is a significant one -- it's an expression of the way that the offense is limited in what it can do when it really needs to.

4. Another point to make was that this overall continued improvement came against a good offense and the "good" Brett Farve. He wasn't a bit generous on Sunday. It could have been one of his better games of the year, so whatever we got, we earned.

Quite right.

I agree (though it's easy enough to fill your roster with rookies -- Arizona and the old-time Saints used to do it all the time -- more difficult to fill your roster with rookies and WIN!)

7. On the other hand, we have to temper optimism with realism. This defense DID give up over 400 yds of offense to the Vikings, and they aren't the first team to out gain us.

I continue to think that punting isn't that difficult and that having a bad punter is inexcusable. The Zoltan has a big leg (and great hands!) but I still worry about his speed of release and capacity for placement. But he is clearly a gifted athlete with a professional attitude. He should get better and better for the next ten years.

8. Marvin Pryor is going to be fined for his hit on Farve.....and its going to piss me off. Just terrific, Ken. Thanks -- your thoughts enhance the pleasure of a really enjoyable game.
