All the chicken littles - including myself to some extent and virtually everyone outside of NE - were baffled by Bill's decision to let Randy go for "just" a 3rd. Right now that trade is looking like highway robbery. Another downright Machiavellian personnel maneuver by Bill Belichick. There isn't a single other HC/GM in the NFL who is capable of consistently making these moves. No one.

The best part is that the only people that Randy isn't give sh&% to is BB and the Pats, and they are the ones who traded him! Honestly from all accounts, it sounds like Minny made the Pats an offer, BB went to Moss and said, Minny wants you back, we want you to stay, BUT, if you feel like it would be a better situation for you going forward, then we will grant your wish and complete the trade. Moss agreed (hence all of the "it was Randy's choice quotes) and now he is on a 2-6 team with a broken down all man at QB, who are about to become a hand the ball off the AD team, and any dreams Randy had of a big payday are gone. Randy learned the Dieon lesson, but instead of 4 years, it only took 3 weeks.

A bit of hyperbole I'm afraid. Before the trade, I thought Moss's play had declined significantly, and I said here that he was no longer an elite receiver. You don't have to be a genius to see the decline in his productivity, and I suspect lots of NFL people saw what BB saw..

Speaking of Deion, I'm sure his return played a part in this also. How humbled Branch was coming back to the Pats, and how happy he was in his return. There's no doubt in my mind that that stuck with Randy.

I don't think BB is significantly more talented in evaluating players than anyone else.
I think what separates him is he simply will not hesitate to make the right decision regardless of second guessing or criticism.

I think the same goes for scheme, strategy and gameplanning.
I don't think he is miles ahead of other coaches in football intelligence, but I think he is more committed to trusting what he thinks is right than anyone.

Absolutely agreed. If he WAS miles ahead of everyone else in talent evaluation, he wouldn't have some of the disappointing drafts he has had in prior seasons. But BB is still a man of conviction and he knows what he's doing, even when we don't.

While you are correct I think the issues we in his head, if we get him back I think we'll see a much improved Moss.

Thats not how I saw it.
Moss was clear that he wanted to be paid and clear that he thought the Pats wouldn't pay him. Moss sent a clear message that he would disrupt the team if forced to stay.
I think the issue in Minnesota was it became clear that he wasnt getting an extension, so he pulled the same thing there.

Heh. In addition to being ahead of the "cruve" he's also ahead of the curve....

;)

I agree, and I think Kraft should get some of the credit for this. BB is secure in his job, and not looking over his shoulder with each decision.

The viral rumor on the net and around the world is God is getting very jealous of BB!

Good point on his lack of hesitation. But you are selling him way short regarding his skills as a coach and evaluator of talent. He is better at it. Significantly.

Look at how short sighted you are being. This fanbase has been spoiled by success. He's had one legit bad draft year in a decade. That's so far ahead of the average it isn't even funny. Even the consistently great GMs have their Maroney's and Chad Jackson's. People get hung up on things that are quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things....

Perhaps from 00-02, but you cant give the owner credit for not making the clear cut best in the business look over his shoulder.
Personally, I think it came from BBs confidence, not RKs support, but I have no facts, just instinct.

Easy, tiger. I'm not saying BB doesn't know how to draft or anything to that extreme. I was more or less agreeing with the point that BB's talent evaluation isn't "miles ahead" of the rest of the league, and it's shown. Nobody's perfect. I still take him over anybody else.

this move makes the Derrick Burgess move more acceptable...

Randy had it good here hopefully by now he understands that..

Andy, I somewhat agree with the 2nd point, but completely disagree with your first.

What Belichick (and Pioli when he was here) consistently did (and do) better than anyone in the league, is to find people that were physically and mentally
able to play in HIS system. It has been well documented how the Patriots (especially the players) have always said that they do NOT ask the players to do things that they are not capable of doing consistently well.

In this regard, BB is WAY ahead of the curve.

I dont think you are getting my point.
Belichicks top skill is not that he can assess a player better looking at the same film or workout as everyone else, but that he makes better decisions to implement that assessment.
It surely looks like Moss is just not the same player any more. Most coaches, in BBs place would have reached the same conclusion, but few would have made the trade.
It goes the same way with building a roster. BB has as many hits or misses as most, but as you remarked, he has no qualms building a roster of team players and eschewing the 'superstars'. There is a lot of pressure on NFL teams to build a team full of superstar individuals.

Cowboys, Redskins, Chargers and Vikings....Teams FULL of talent...but unable to make it work together....and although not in Belichicks league...one could argue that all teams have respectably succesful proven coaches.

Adalius Thomas and Randy Moss were the two "superstar" players that Belichick went after....and we didn't win a SB with them....Hmmm. Interesting.

I agree with your assesment of BB...but I still say that Belichick is a far better evaluator of talent than any coach in the league....but that JA GM in Indy is a close 2nd.
