The early indications are that Belichick may have had his best draft tis year ever. Thoughts.

Thank you :D

Just like the McCourty vs. Wilson thread, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, but the early returns are that the Pats made the right choice.

I have heard word on Hughes is that he has looked overweight and slow in the preseason. Granted we wouldn't know since he hasn't seen the field. He has only be active for 3 games and not seen the field in those games. I never thought that he fit the Pats' system anyway. Even with Freeney and Mathis starting over him, he should be seeing some rotational time as a first round pick.

Can we give Floyd Reese some props? He helped build the Titans into a perennial SB Contender. I'm glad he was able to come here and perhaps he can have an even better support system and better results...

Wasnt he coming off a back injury? Either way we can revisit this after a couple years and see how things are going then, but as of now, Cunningham is looking better and better every week.

Don't get me wrong. I love Cunningham and I'm glad he's a Pat, but...

The particular player is only half the equation. If BB was coaching Graham or Hughes, they would be doing much better than they currently are with their respective teams. Better than a BB coached Cunningham though? Impossible to judge.

That's what I'm thinking but I've been told by people on this board that he is not that involved in the drafting. I'm told he was brought into New England for contract negotiations. That's weird considering he messed the Titans up regarding the cap but did draft 3 rookies of the year in 11 drafts and built a Super Bowl contender in Tenn.

Still want Sean Canfield over Zac Robinson???

Are we going to do this with every draft pick 7 games into their rookie year?

Still want Clay Mathews......

I heard the same thing-- that Reese just worked on contract negotiations with the team. But I went back and found this article by our own Reiss ( Floyd Reese quick hits from draft party - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston ), and it sounds to me like Floyd is actually pretty involved in the draft process now, at least this past year.

Ironically, I think the guy who said Floyd works strictly on contracts was also Mike Reiss, but I believe that was right after Floyd was hired. Seems like his job description has grown since then.

With Belichick, you've got to assume that everyone has mutiple roles to play, whatever their job title is. I imagine his philosophy on versatility extends to the business world as well as the football world.

Back on topic, I was really on Brandon Graham before the draft. He was my binky. But I haven't followed him since the draft.

I liked Cunningham, too, but thought he would be limited to a third down role until his 2nd or 3rd year in the league. So far, he's exceeding everyone's expectations. I really like this guy. He's got a great attitude, he's fast, and he's much stronger than I thought he was. I think he's going to be a bigtime player for us.

I think you ought to wait more than 8 weeks before making judgments on how good or bad a player may be

Agreed.

But I'm really excited about Cunningham so far. I wasn't expecting much really. But he looks like he could develop into a star. Still a long way to go, but there's a lot to be excited about.

What has Cunningham done again? Had one good game and now he's going to Canton? :D

Blah blah blah... "It's too early"... "Wait more games".... "Can't compare players with different coaches"...

Add to the discussion geniuses (well not that last point, which is novel idea at least), or just lurk. You know what, why don't we just wait ten years after each player retires, compare each players entire statistical game history, factor intangibles, adjust for opponent strength and coaching, and regress to the mean?

Funny thing is, then we'd STILL have people saying they can't be compared equitably.

So, let's say you're asked "SO FAR, if you had to choose one, would you rather have Cunningham over the others"? Of course the answer is yes. Now, was that so frickin' hard?

Seems like the M.O. here is that its okay to be enthusiastic about a player after a few good games (regardless of where they're from) but its not okay to make harsh judgements early on.
I think thats a reasonable positive outlook, even if it is somewhat hypocritical.

Bingo! It's just too early right now.
McCourty is a friggin stud. It's not too early at all. Am I the only one who sees this?! This kid will be a pro-bowler, guaranteed.
