Randy Moss fined $25,000 for not cooperating with media

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 29, 2010 4:34 PM ET

After staying mum in Minnesota for three weeks before a quick one-on-one chat Thursday, Vikings receiver Randy Moss was fined $25,000 by the NFL for not cooperating with media policy.

Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports a league spokesman said Moss was "in violation of NFL policy, his player contract, and the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement."

From the report:

That's too bad, because Moss always has something interesting to say.

Yeah, I bet. Like, "I really screwed up by acting out in New England," "My new QB is an undisciplined lout," and "My new 'coach' is a spineless buffoon."

What a stupid policy. I guess I value the media ambiguity surrounding the Pats too much to appreciate how Randy could be fined for trying to avoid creating another attraction at the Circvs Viking Minnesotae.

So the media sucks right up until Randy Moss doesn't cooperate with them- then he's the jerk. Figures- personally, I don't blame the guy, I wouldn't talk to the media in his place either.

What's the rule? Never heard of anything like this outside the SB.

YEA, lets blame Randy Moss! He refused to talk to the media! What a TERRIBLE influence around the league, and to his team!
KEEP BLAMING RANDY MOSS!!!!!! lol

It's funny how people keep trying to find ways to blame Moss for something.

What is the policy?

The NFL fined the Minnesota Vikings' star wide receiver on Friday for failing to cooperate with the news media. Players' contracts specify they must make themselves available to the media at specific times each week. Moss last spoke to the media on Oct. 13, then declined interviews after a win over Dallas on Oct. 17, throughout last week leading up to a loss at Green Bay, and after the defeat.

This was taken from NFL.com, but definitely one of the stupidest policies that exists in the NFL. What has the NFL become now, that you can get fined for NOT talking to the media!

How is Moss an idiot? Because he refuses to add fuel to the fire. Because he refuses to take the bait. I guarantee you, if he was wearing Patriot Blue you'd be defending him.

You can get fined for not talking. You can get fined for saying negative things about the NFL. It is all hogwash.

First, it's part of all player's contracts. If the players have a problem with it then they can let their union rep know, and have the NFLPA take it up in the upcoming CBA.

Second, these press conferences and Q&A's help promote both the game and the player. By promoting the game that leads to higher ratings and attendance - which leads to more money available for all players in their salaries. By making themselves available in these events the players involved become more recognizable, and can benefit by more endorsements, and more recognition for charities that they wish to participate in.

Third, while $25,000 is a huge sum of money to you and me, keep in mind it is just 0.28% of Moss' salary this year - and that doesn't include anything he earns beyond his basic salary. And losing that portion of your salary is a whole lot easier to overcome when you are already set for life than it is when you are living paycheck to paycheck. He probably simply felt it was well worth it to avoid the questions and the scrutiny that would follow with whatever answers he gave.

Maybe we've just run out of things to talk about with 39 hours still to go before kickoff, but I don't see how either Moss' decision or the NFL's policy is all that big a deal.

calm down I think people where just having a joke around

Vikings fined $80000 !

Head Coach 35k for opening his mouth too much against I think something related to officiating,,, serves him right,,,but Moss 25k for not cooperating with media is ridiculous. Their RT Loadholt got 20k for a face mask. My question ,,isn't that just too much and secondly where does the money all go to ? Cheers Abdul.

I'm thinking most of the people are dissing the policy and not Moss.

If I were him, I would now make myself available when required and every answer would be "no comment".

If I remember correctly, all money from fines is used for the NFL charities.

EDIT: If this is the case, can the player then use this on his taxes?

Yes, all of it goes to charities. Some people seem to act like it is going into the Godell family vacation fund.

I would assume it is tax deductible.
