Game: Pick Belichick's top 5

I was listening to NFL radio this morning and Ross Tucker was talking about how injuries and IR affect some teams and not others. He made mention of the Packers and how they have 10 on IR and 5 are starters. Then he said the the Patriots also had a bunch of player on IR, including Bodden, Warren, and Faulk; who he surmised were on BB's top 10 list of players. Basically, he was saying of you took our roster plus our IR and had BB pick guys, sandlot style, Bodden, Warren, and Faulk would be amongst the first 10 players BB would have selected.

Sooo, this got me thinking. What would BB's 5 top picks be and I pose the same question to you guys.

For me it would be:

1. Brady
2. Wilfork
3. Welker
4. Faulk
5. Mayo

Way too early for that I think. It wouldn't surprise me if he does join that top 5 eventually, but we're not even halfway through his rookie season, which is way too early to knock out key leaders on both sides of the ball who have been here for a few years.

I do wonder if Faulk's time is up though. Even before the injury, he had some uncharacteristic drops. I hope he comes back though.

I think its very much a case of what needs must. thw way I would read it is that he is one of the 5 most important players on the roster presently.
I would hate to think what it would be like if he weren't selected.

Actually, looking at my list, I realize that there probably won't be a huge variation on the players selected. It may actually be more interesting to see who 6-10 would be.

I guess I would have to say:

7. Volmer
8. Mankins
9. Hernandez
10. Ty Warren

I think McCourty is developing really nicely, but I sometimes wonder if Bodden hadn't gotten hurt, McCourty would be getting picked on a lot more and we may have a different feeling about his progression.

I do think that McCourty maybe on the list within the next 2 years though.

I love Faulk, but I'd be surprised if hes in the top 15, let alone 5.

I think he is, but I also think he the best CB we have right now. I think the other side of the field is just and easier completion right now. Just saying, if Bodden was playing, would McCourty be our best CB? I'd venture to say he'd have more INTs if he was playing opposite Bodden though.

There's a difference between being thrown at and being picked on. Teams aren't afraid to throw McCourty's way, but they're not going out of their way to try and throw the ball at him. If the guy is open, they throw it. If he's not, they go somewhere else.

However, if a team thinks one corner is a definite weakness, they will go out of their way to expose him, forming a part of their game strategy and drawing up specific plays to go after him. That is when someone is being picked on.

I think what is probably being overlooked is that while most of us as well as those analysts on the radio are focused almost exclusively on here and now (i.e., BB the Head Coach, and the 2010 season), they are neglecting to consider how Belichick would look at this question since he is also the GM. In other words, he is not just looking at 2010 as we are or the guys on the radio are; he is considering both this year as well as the future - along with contracts, future salary caps and budgets, age, injuries, upside, downside, future draft picks and other possible free agents, when contracts end, etc.

A good example would be Randy Moss. He was a top player for the 2010 season, but then when also considering all those other factors outlined above, he was not as highly rated.

So if you are going to ask who would Belichick's top five or top ten picks be, then you have to consider all that as well in my opinion - unless the question is rephrased to who would BB consider to be his five most important players in 2010, or who as a GM are the top five overall.

I presume Tucker was talking about this season only. I'll pick a list for right now if healthy, rather than Opening Day or whatever, and go with:

Those four I would think almost unanimously would make any top 5. You could make a case for a lot of guys next... ie. Chung, McCourty, Faulk, Bodden, Warren

This is who I think BB would pick.

1. Brady - Obviously
2. Wilfork - Must control the middle of the D
3. Mayo - Same
4. Light - Need someone to protect the blind side and he is the starter there.
5. Chung - Has been one of the most consistent players and tacklers
6. Bodden - Our best corner when he was healthy (if we had a good OLB they would go here and everyone else would move down. Someday that will hopefully be Cunningham.)
7. Mankins - Need more protection for Brady and help in the running game.
8. Gostkowski - Killer in field position. Any team that doesn't have a consistent kicker is in trouble.
9. Welker - Not only for being the WR machine but also returning punts and Kickoffs.
10. Neal/Gronkowski. - Can't decide between these two. Neal has often been considered the Pats best Olineman when not injured but Gronk is such a devestating blocker plus a great red zone presence. I would side more with Gronk but I could also see Neal here.

I think those 10 give you a good start in all phases of the game and will give you a chance to win even with jags in the other spots.
