Pats re-doing contracts on the down low...

It got mentioned today on Twitter and it might have been mentioned in the Sergio Brown thread, but the Pats have been re-doing some of the contracts with their bottom of the roster players.

When Sergio Brown was signed, he was given a 4 year deal and a 35K signing bonus. Pretty damn good for the kid.. Says that the Pats are impressed with him.

Darnell Jenkins has had his contract re-done and he's making over $250K.

Tony Carter had his contract re-done and is making $150K.

I don't think it get's mentioned enough how the Pats do tend to take care of the bottom of the roster when it comes to letting guys know their appreciated.

I don't know if it's that they "appreciate" them so much as that they want to make sure they don't get swiped away by other teams. The two PS'ers must be getting some interest, so the Pats gave them more incentive to stay.

Not quite. [BTW, that's roughly what Brandon Deaderick got as a SB.]

According to Rapaport, that deal also includes fourth-year escalators that generally aren't found in UDFA contracts. [On the flip side, if Brown plays out this contract, presumably he will skip the RFA year.]

The Brown deal is just good business. He didn't make the roster out of TC but obviously the team thought highly enough of him to keep him on the PS at a higher salary than they had to, and now they're able to lock him up for 4 years at a bargain price. That's extremely good value for a young kid who continues to improve and could be a more substantial member of your football team in the next few years.

I also think that this is a great deal for the pats. $35K to lock a player up for his 4th year (no RFA).

And yes, this means that the team values Brown as much as a 7th round draft choice, or even a 6th.

Yeah, that was him. And that's a play this D doesn't make 9/10 times in 2008/2009.

These no-names have FAR exceeded my early season expectations. I had hoped that some of them would develop into playiz by December, not nearly ALL of them and so early.

We can now call that the "$35,000 Tackle".

Actually, this guy KILLED it in pre-season - - he was all over the field in a couple of those games and many here had him making the team in August.

This is a very well deserved promotion. I'm happy for the kid.

I agree with this. But how the heck did we get so many good players on this roster the last couple of years? Was it a shift in focus and philosophy?

I heard someone mention that Bill is now not trying to MAKE players into what he wants, but getting players who play how he wants already, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, I'm actually excited to see the D on the field for the first time in a few years. I hope we continue on a path to having a dominant and DEEP Defense.

Steelers, Colts, Giants, Saints...

They all won recently without having that "best bottom 10 players" thing working for them, although the Steelers did have some decent backups. The Colts, in particular, have been a pretty top heavy team.

I disagree.

These teams all win because they have guys down the roster who have stepped in for the superstars.

The Steelers lose big names to free agency and big cities every year - - and they keep on chugging.

The Giants won the SB AFTER Tiki Barber decided he wanted to host The Today Show and The Big Dummy Tight End got hurt - - they had depth to whether those losses.

The Colts consistently draft well and have a deep team. They have Manning, but we have Brady - - doesn't mean that either team forgets it's bottom ten, like Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones does.

Of those four teams (Steelers, Giants, Colts, Patriots), only one - - the Patriots - - has gone big into free agency the past five years - - and, not coincidentally, has been the only one not to win a SB in that time. That philosophy may be changing back to fundamentals again in NE.
