I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been made yet. But since I've been joking lately that I'm the president of his fan club, I figured I'd make the thread.

I have to admit, I hated this pick on draft day. We had traded down several times, had some major team needs, but took a guy who wasn't certain to even start for us. But after reading up a bit more, I became a believer.

A lot of you probably knew all about his huge year in college, especially the great draft gurus we have here, but for the more casual fans, check this out:

Devin McCourty, Rutgers, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Against McCourty, the Scarlet Knights opponents attempted 249 throws, completing just 88 (35.34 percent) for 684 yards and only two scores, an average of 7.77 yards per pass completion. He has allowed just 2.75 yards per pass attempt, the lowest figure of any active player in the Big East Conference.

While those figures are very impressive, they do not tell the entire story of this shutdown cornerback's ability. Against his main pass coverage assignments, McCourty has held those receivers to only 42 receptions for 386 yards on 158 passes targeted into his area, meaning that quarterbacks have completed just 26.58 percent of those tosses and their intended targets were limited to 9.19 yards per pass completion and 2.44 yards per attempt.

Those same receivers averaged 33.84 catches for 430.05 yards (12.71 yards per catch) and 2.47 touchdowns per season vs. other cornerbacks they faced. Devin has proven to be an excellent press coverage defender, as his excellent field vision has seen him make plays on the ball 45.39 percent of the time outside his area, coming to the aid after a teammate had blown an assignment. He has jammed/rerouted those pass catchers away from 148 incomplete attempts (average of 3.84 per game), the most of any cornerback in the Division I ranks during that span.

While developing his shutdown cornerback skills, McCourty is not only a top-notch coverage defender, but has also excelled playing inside the box. He made 91 of his 236 tackles in run support (38.56 percent) and has proven to be a drive-killer, as he registered an incredible 94 third-down stops and 33 more on fourth-down action (38.60 percent of his plays made resulted in killing the opposition's series).

I didn't even include the punt and kick return portions of his resume.

With Bodden's injury, McCourty was thrown into the fire but emerged as our #1 corner. There were some awful moments in the pre-season (the St. Louis game for example), but he's been our best corner without a doubt.

Through 6 games, he has 23 solo tackles (26 total), 4 passes defensed and got his first INT last week against San Diego. At the same time, he's still a rookie and still learning. But BB has praised his intelligence, saying he's one of the few players who knows what everyone on the field's responsibilities are.

I think he has a chance to be the best corner we've had since Ty Law. Right now, he's still learning, and his ball skills aren't the greatest. But he's getting better. Against Baltimore, he was flagged for pass interference when he didn't turn his head around with the ball in the air. But he adjusted and later in the game, on a similar pass, he got his head around in time to knock the pass down easily.

This kid has been solid so far, but I think he's going to get much better and has the potential to be a shutdown corner.

I was one of the few people that kind of liked the pick. I like the way he's developing, his attitude seems to be spot on, and he's apparently capable of learning from his mistakes. Solid rookie so far.

I like those stats you give for his time in college, where can we get this for nfl players?

I learned a good lesson that on draft day I should not be upset regardless of who BB chooses. Bill may pass up on an "elite" player and grab some guy who we never even heard of, but it is all carefully thought out and best for the team in the near and far future.

I was pissed when Bill didn't take Dez on draft day but man I am so glad he didn't now. Not anything against Dez, although he is a little numb, he has been a decent player this year for the Cowboys. McCourty, on the other hand, looks like he may become the next Darelle Revis. If we didn't go corner in the 1st round we may have been screwed. I also think Hernandez makes our offense more dangerous than Dez would, and Hernandez was a 4th rounder!

I was also puzzled when we didn't grab Sergio Kindle and instead went with Cunningham (who I had to wikipedia at the time), yet Cunningham has been far more productive this season than Kindle who hasn't even played I'm pretty sure. Then there was Everson Griffen who was thought to be 1st round talent and dropped to the 4th. We got Deadrick in the 7th who has gotten plenty of reps and looks solid. Plus, Griffen hasn't played much at all.

I think it's safe to say McCourty is exceeding expectations.

I questioned the pick but it's worked out great...In Bill We Trust

I wish I knew. One of the draft gurus can probably correct me on this, but the basic of it is that I believe college game film is made available to more than just the teams, such as scouting services, for a fee. And so the information is available to more than just coaches. In the NFL, only coaches and some media are given access to the game film, and any information that NFL coaches pull from the film, they're not exactly eager to share with the public. It'd be impossible to pull this type of information without the coach's film. I wish they'd make it more available though.

I joined on 4/16 :)

Box turned me onto him. He was my #1 pick on draft morning too, assuming no trade up of course. He just seemed like a Patriot and he filled a need even before Bodden got hurt.

The draft sub-forum has some amazing posters and it's one of my fav things about this place. It doesn't surprise me that some of the draft gurus picked up on this kid as a potential 1st rounder even though he was considered a 2nd to 3rd rounder throughout most of his senior season.

I'll join :)

Looks like he is going to be troubling WRs for a LONG time :)

Thank god we didn't take Wilson and the jets then take McCourty. We'd be stuck with 2 darius butler's and kyle arrington

I've been afraid he was just a decent cornerback who wasn't being tested because of easy passes around Butler, but after that pic last week I look forward to his development.

The interception last week was a fantastic play. Great burst and timing on his jump. Picks can be divided into ones that deserve to be intercepted and ones that don't, and that was definitely the second. A lot of our guys (Chung, Wilhite, even Bodden) have a lot of the first but not really many of the second.

Naturally when they showed the highlight on the NFL network all they mentioned was that the WR should have tried harder to break up the catch.

Game 7 vs. the Vikings

4 tackles, 3 passes defensed, 1 huge game-changing INT where he knocks the ball away from Harvin and runs it back for 37 yards.

In the context of the game, the Pats had scored a TD at the start of the 3rd quarter to take the lead for the first time. A short kick against the wind left the Vikings with the ball around their own 40, and despite a 3 and out, they pinned the Pats deep. The Pats went 3 and out, and with the wind in his face, Mesko could only punt 37 yards to midfield. Vikings ball at midfield.

With a short field, the Vikings pick up 9 yards on a Peterson run. On 2nd and 1 from the Pats 41, a deep pass to Harvin is picked off by McCourty, who returns it 37 yards to the Vikings 37. 4 plays later, the Pats punch it in to go up 21-10. Major turning point in the game.

Wasn't a big fan of the pick.

How quickly things change.... LOVE this kid and his potential.

I love McCourty. The guy was a shutdown CB in college. If today is any indication, he will be a shutdown CB in the pros.

The funny thing was his brother got a INT for the Titans in the first half of that game. I joked to my wife that someone should get word to Devin that his brother got a INT!

Who threw the crunching block on his INT?

I think it was Fletcher ... can't wait to see the replay again.

I'm in. In fact, I sorta started a similar thread in the preseason. They should be merged.

Just two days ago I went looking for a McCourty jersey on eBay.lol

Looked like Meriweather to me.

Also forgot that McCourty almost picked off another deep pass near the end zone until I believe Harvin tackled him. He was in perfect position for that one as well.
