So I'm watching the Pats/Chargers game right now, and Light is getting absolutely abused. Nothing fancy either, the LDE is just blowing by him on the outside. Light isn't getting any younger, but is getting a step slower. So, I pose this questions to our draft guru's.
Any high rated LT's out there that could go in the first round? Doesn't necessarily need to be with the Raider's pick, but OT could be a need for us in the draft.

The offensive tackle class doesn't look that good. No prospects in the mold of Joe Thomas or Jake Long.

Its only ONE GAME........WTF

It's all starts on the front lines(off/def). You are right we need Matty replacement or RT.

The LT class for next spring sucks IMO. But the RT class for the 2nd round and later is decent. I think it would be the better move to draft a RT (or to be more accurate take a college LT that we move to RT), then move Seabass to LT.

there are no elite left tackles in the draft but please tell me you aren't serious. Light has been struggling with speed for a while and he seems to have lost a step.

There it is.

AHH he hasn't seemed to have much of a problem this year until today. I'm not the biggest Matt Light fan but until today he hasn't struggled noticeably. This reminds me of the "Ninkovich is Worst" thread earlier in the season, a lot of knee jerk reactions. Light needs to be replaced, but not because of this One game.

This one game reminds everyone of Light's weakness. He struggles with outside speed rushers. We've known this for a while. It's going to get worse as he gets older. Tom Brady got crushed a couple of times today. I would like to see the franchise's back protected better I was just wondering if there was a Thomas or Long type LT that could be grabbed up high. Sounds like the answer is no.

Thanks Triplechamp and Defsoul for answering my questions instead of being argumentative jackasses like some.

He certainly has given us quite a bit to cheer for throughout his career and is still having a good season except for the one game. However you can't hesitate to draft his replacement if they think he is there in the draft. He is getting near the end of his career and it is evident that he is having trouble at times. Personally I think center is a much bigger issue right now. Koppen is getting blown up by the bigger NT's which is effecting everything the Pats are trying to do.

There are some options in the draft like Castonzo out of BC to play left or right tackle or they could go with the center out of Carolina. Or both. Who knows, I know a lot of fans are in love with the DE's and DT's this year but it never hurts to shore up the other side of the line either.

BB will do as he has done in the past when a position is getting old. He will throw a bunch of players at it and hope something will stick.

Our Def is young now and improving. Matt Light and Koppen have been overated for quite awhile. Before anyone throws stats at me like brady has only been sacked(this many times. It is because Brady moves well in the pocket and has a quick release.

I think BB will take at least 3-4 OL this year. I imagine that SeaBass will move over to LT, Connoly has impressed me at LG, Koppen is older and has never been strong at the POA, Neal is very injury prone, Kazur is a joke if/when he makes it back next year.

As someone else said there are no stellar LT's, but there are several who could step in a be a nice RT.

I am going to list some OT's and I would like to get opinions on them and a fit for us.

Sherrod- Decent LT, but would be an outstanding RT
Costanzo- I am not a fan, but I know others have him rated high
Love- I like him allot
My binky is Barsdale, but he reminds me of Ciron Black.

Bash away

no player should be judged on one game, but Jason Taylor beat him in the Jets game, im not going to comment on the Baltimore or the Phins game because I think the trouble came from the other side but Im not sure. Matt Light will be 33 and a free agent (I believe) Im not sure that he can't be upgraded by either moving him to RT and making Vollmer the LT or drafting an eventual replacement.

Our OL was absolutely putrid today. Putrid. No push, no protection, nothing.

Out of the top 7 picks next year, at least 2 of them must be used on the OL,
which is in desperate need of a major (3 out of the 5 positions) overhaul.

Don't think so? Consider: Bill has drafted only 1 OLman of consequence in the last 5 draft classes.
That record of futility must change - immediately.

I think Vollmer, even though he's had some shaky moments this season, is primed to take over LT next season. I'm still very confident with him going forward.

I don't think Light should retained. He's been more of a liability for the last 2 years now. RT will be a need when Vollmer is shifted over.

I can't see them going LT in the first round, especially considering the pool of prospects.

I suspect Nate Solder from Colorado will keep climbing as the draft approaches. He certainly seems like a Patriots type, halfway between Vollmer and Maneri. Super tall, super athletic, top student-athlete and only in his 2nd season on the line after moving from tight end.

Maneri himself is an interesting wild card. I'm curious to see what Dante can whip him up into in the course of a year.

Hmm.. it is a tough call. In some ways you can look at the Pats line as being in pretty good shape going forward. Especially if Light can be signed to a two year extension, he is not the greatest player in the world but is usually pretty steady. If Mankins is re-signed then they have very good depth.

LT - Light
LG - Mankins
C - Koppen
RG - Neal
RT - Vollmer

Depth - Connolly, Kaczur

That is the optimistic view.

Flip side
- Light leaves
- Mankins leaves
- Koppen regresses
- Neal gets hurt / retires

I don't see offensive line as a round 1 priority unless they can find a Mankins type player (day 1 starter).

We don't need an LT, since Vollmer is the future at that position.

We probably need a RT... depending on how the developmental guys progress.

OG/C is a bigger need at this point.

Would be nice if Mankins came to his senses. But, that horse has left the barn. Had to use a cowboy reference for our rodeo guy. I like Rodney Hudson - G - FSU. He supposedly can play some C. He moves pretty good. They have him at 285. He had mono or something in the off-season and wasn't able to bulk up. He seems like the type of kid Scar and Wojcik can work their magic on. We wouldn't have to use a 1st rounder on him.

Precisely.

I place a dramatic level of emphasis on the O Line, and if Michael Oher were coming out, this year, I would council to give drafting him serious consideration. My belief is that you cannot have too many Killer Grizzlies.

But given what seems to me to be an anemic Tackle class, I would avoid the alleged "top tier", as it is highly likely to offer considerably less Return on Investment than some of the Defensive Front 7 talent that I expect to come out.

Nate Solder is a guy that intrigues me greatly, as he does, others...But I fear that the thin Tackle Market will probably drive his Market Value expensively high. And as he is on the raw side, anyway, I'd rather aim for the back of the second round, or even later, where I suspect some great raw talent, less heralded, will be available, as things currently project.

* Tyron Smith
* Blake Christopher
* Ryan Miller
* Tanner Hawkinson

These are names that come to mind. And above, all, if he can be drawn to declare: Al Netter.

Speaking of Center/Guards, does anybody know how well Maurkice Pouncey's brother is doing so far?
